Book Quantocks and North Somerset Coast

Download or read book Quantocks and North Somerset Coast written by Dave Green and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2022-05-23 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Somerset is an area of great geological diversity, straddling the Tees–Exe Line between highland and lowland Britain. The story of the last 400 million years of Earth history can be gleaned from its rocks: the opening and closing of oceans, the collision of continents and a journey across the Equator. The area may also provide the key to settle the controversy about the origin of South-West England, whose ancient geology is so different from the rest of the country. This unique and diverse geology is also the reason why it is one of the most beautiful and varied stretches of landscape in England. With nearly 170 illustrations, including maps, charts, diagrams and colour photographs, this book describes and explains the evidence for the geological history of the area, from the Palaeozoic, through the Mesozoic to the Pleistocene and Holocene. Regional guides, which discuss the factors that led to the landscape we see today and offer places of interest to visit, cover: the Northern Brendon Hills and Minehead; the Southern Brendon Hills; Wellington and the Blackdown Hills; Wiveliscombe and the Vale of Stogumber; the Quantock Hills; West Somerset coast and the Cannington and Bridgwater Lowlands.

Download or read book Beaches of the Tasmanian Coast and Islands written by Andrew D. Short and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beaches of the Tasmanian Coast and Islands covers the beaches of the Tasmanian coast, together with those on Maria, Bruny, King, Robbins, Walker and Flinders islands - in all, 1,617 beaches spread along 3,030 km of coast. This book has two aims. First, to provide the public with general information on the origin and nature of all Tasmania's beaches, including the contribution of geology, oceanography, climate and biota to the beaches, and information on beach hazards and safety. Second, to provide a description of each beach, including its name(s), location, access, facilities, dimensions and the character of the beach and surf zone. The book comments on the suitability of the beach for bathing, surfing and fishing, with special emphasis on the natural hazards. Based on the physical hazards, all beaches are rated in terms of public safety and scaled from 1 (least hazardous) to 10 (most hazardous).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastwise examines the coastline of the British Isles as a dynamic environment and offers you an understandable explanation of how the coastline functions as a single entity. It is supported by hundreds of stunning photos and illustrations. It begins by exploring how the forces of nature combine to create its physical features (and continue to do so). This is a multifaceted story that involves ancient geology and powerful ocean forces. It then turns to the living nature of the coast, covering the unique plants, animals and other organisms whose interdependence keeps the coast alive and healthy. These amazing creatures are described and displayed in full colour. The third part of the book looks at how humans have interacted with the coast, using it for defence, commerce and leisure. It explores these aspects from the earliest times to the present day. The final section shows, for each coastal region, where the features discussed in the book can be observed and enjoyed, giving you a practical way of exploring the elements described in the book. All aspects of the coast are covered, making it essential reading – or a wonderful gift – for all those who spend time on Britain's coast. As Countryfile presenter, Tom Heap, says in his Foreword: "These pages are a practical love letter to Britain's waterfront and no seaside holiday home should be without them."

Book A Severn Barrage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Energy and Climate Change Committee
  • Publisher : Stationery Office
  • Release : 2013-06-10
  • ISBN : 9780215058843
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book A Severn Barrage written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Energy and Climate Change Committee and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hafren Power's proposal for an 18km fixed tidal barrage across the Severn estuary between Brean in England and Lavernock Point in Wales is likely to require a very high level of support over many years. It is not believed at this stage that the barrage would be competitive with other low-carbon technologies. Hafren Power have failed to answer the serious environmental concerns about a potential barrage adequately. The scale of mitigation measures and compensatory habitat required is unprecedented, and questions remain about how a barrage such as the one proposed would comply with EU legislation. Tidal energy is a vast resource which remains largely untapped. However, tidal and marine projects must demonstrate their economic, environmental and technological credentials and their ability to gain stakeholder support. The Government should consider whether a smaller tidal facility could develop expertise and provide evidence before a decision about scaling up is taken. Although construction of the barrage would be privately financed, Government support would be required for approximately thirty years through Contracts for Difference (CfD) or a similar mechanism. The long lifecycle of a tidal barrage, thought to operate for over 120 years, could lower the overall levelised cost of energy but is far too distant a prospect to overcome more immediate concerns. The strike price required by Hafren Power is unknown, but the ability of the project to compete with other low-carbon forms of energy is questionable. The likelihood of a high strike price over many years risks eating up an excessively large proportion of the funds available under the Levy Control Framework
