Book Neogene Paleontology of the Northern Dominican Republic

Download or read book Neogene Paleontology of the Northern Dominican Republic written by Thomas R. Waller and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on approximately 25,000 specimens from the Miocene and Pliocene of the Cibao Valley, northern Dominican Republic, the bivalve family Propeamussiidae is represented by two genera and four species, including two new species, Cyclopecten acuminatus and C. zalaya; the family Pectinidae is represented by three subfamilies, six tribes, 18 genera, and 35 species. New taxa in the Pectinidae include six new genera ( Interchlamys , Chagrepecten , Gurabopecten , Paraleptopecten , Zamorapecten , and Antillipecten ), 15 new species ( Caribachlamys guayubinensis , C. jungi , Mimachlamys blowi , M. vokesorum , Palliolum ? cibaoense , Argopecten parathetidis , Chagrepecten paracactaceus , Gurabopecten uniplicatus , Lindapecten baitoaensis , L. paramuscosus , Euvola gurabensis , Zamorapecten maoensis , Antillipecten janicoensis , A. microlineatus , and A. quemadosensis) , one species in open nomenclature ( Paraleptopecten sp. a ), and one new subspecies ( Argopecten eccentricus lacabrensis ). In addition, a new name, Euvola jamaicensis , replaces the name E. barretti (Woodring, 1925). Lectotypes are designated for Cyclopecten guppyi (Dall, 1898) and Cryptopecten phrygium (Dall, 1886). Four of the genera (20%) and all but four of the species (90%) in the two families are extinct. Among the Pectinidae, 60% of the species but only 5% of the genera are endemic to the northern Dominican Republic. The high species endemism is possibly an artifact due to the absence in many other regions of precisely correlative strata as well as to differences in facies and sampling methods. Assemblages of the two families change composition going upward in stratigraphic sections measured along each major river, reflecting increasing depth of deposition, changing bottom conditions, and association with coral reefs or marine grasses and algae. Evolutionary changes within particular lineages help to resolve several previous biostratigraphic uncertainties and controversies, including the age of limestones on the Río Yaque del Norte and in the Guayubín area. Detailed study of these changes has also shed new light on the causes of dramatic faunal differences between stratigraphic sections on the Río Gurabo and Río Mao, separated by only 10 km.

  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book Global Biodiversity written by T. Pullaiah and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume in the new multi-volume set Global Biodiversity is a rich resource on the biodiversity of a selection of countries in the Americas and in Australia. Chapters explore both wild and cultivated plants, wild and domesticated animals, and the variety of microbes of the countries of Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Australia, Paraguay, the United States, and Venezuela. The different chapters explore the geographical status, ecosystem diversity, species diversity, genetic diversity, and conservation efforts in each selected country. They focus on genetic diversity of crop plants/cultivated plants and domesticated animals and their wild relatives and also discuss the endangered and protected plants and animals of the respective counties. Other volumes in this series include coverage of selected countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa. The volumes provide an informative compilation on the variety and variability of life in the regions discussed and will help to fill the gap in knowledge while also encouraging the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable utilization.

Book Estuarine and Marine Bivalve Mollusk Culture

Download or read book Estuarine and Marine Bivalve Mollusk Culture written by Winston Menzel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the biology, culture techniques, research and development, and future of the fishery of some of the most important bivalve mollusks cultured throughout the world. The book emphasizes those species that are truly cultured during some part of their life cycle rather than those that are harvested from natural populations. Graphs and figures summarize fisheries information and provide quick access to important production figures. Species covered include oysters, soft-shell and hard-shell clams, scallops, mussels, pearl oysters, razor clams, cockles and giant clams. Geographic areas featured include United States, Mexico, South and Central America, Europe, India, Japan, China, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and the coral atolls of the Pacific Ocean. Estuarine and Marine Bivalve Mollusk Culture brings together the lifetime efforts of the late Dr. Winston Menzel to characterize and improve bivalve mollusk culture worldwide. Aquaculturalists, private oyster and bivalve culturalists, and fisheries scientists will find this book to be an invaluable guide to bivalve mollusk culture.

Book Tropical Marine Mollusks

Download or read book Tropical Marine Mollusks written by Edward J. Petuch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine biogeography, the study of the spatial distribution of organisms in the world’s oceans, is one of the most fascinating branches of oceanography. This book continues the pioneering research into the distributions of molluscan faunas, first studied by biologists over 160 years ago. It illustrates 1778 species of gastropods in full color, many of which are extremely rare and poorly known endemic species that are illustrated for the first time outside of their original descriptions. The spatial arrangements of malacofaunas shown in this book can be considered proxies for worldwide oceanic conditions and used as tools for determining patterns of global climate change. The book's documentation of evolutionary "hot spots" and geographically restricted endemic faunas can also be used as a base line for future studies on patterns of environmental deterioration and extinction in the marine biosphere. Documenting the evolution of the amazingly rich worldwide gastropod fauna, this book will appeal to physical and chemical oceanographers, systematic and evolutionary biologists, historical geologists, paleontologists, climatologists, geomorphologists, and physical geographers. The authors incorporate aspects of all of these disciplines into a new classification system for the nomenclature of biogeographical spatial units found in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate seas.
