Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Thoughts Concerning Domestic Slavery Yet is not man herein the less favoured. If rights are not granted to him unconditionally as inherent and absolute, it is that he has the nobler prerogative of acquiring them for himself. If they are made to depend upon the proper exercise of his own powers it is because in such exercise con sists his real glory because thereby he attains to the excellence of his nature, to usefulness and true happiness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Thoughts Concerning Domestic Slavery My Dear Sir: Concerning the subject of domestic slavery, which has often formed matter of conversation between us, I have determined to write you my thoughts somewhat at length. For I have meditated much upon it since I saw you last; and now that we can no longer meet at pleasure, as we were wont, to interchange discourse, my reflections have accumulated upon me to such a degree that no means of setting them forth would perhaps be so suitable as this: to say nothing of my own disposition, which inclines me rather to writing than to talking. I have read Dr. Channing's book, which you were so kind as to send me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Philosophy and Practice of Slavery, as Exhibited in the Institution of Domestic Slavery in the United States: With the Duties of Masters to Slaves Since the year. 1844, I have been frequently called on to discuss this subject on various popular occasions in Virginia and North Carolina. My classes in college were compelled to deal with the subject of domestic slavery. Not only the popular ideas in regard to African slavery in this country, but the specific treatment of this topic by numer ous text authors in Moral Science, rendered this unavoidable. A deep conviction that the minds of young men were receiving a wrong, and, in the, present state of the country, a fatal direction. Book Slavery and the Domestic Slave Trade in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Slavery and the Domestic Slave Trade in the United States Classic Reprint written by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery and the Domestic Slave Trade, in the United States Slavery is the exercise of arbitrary power, vested in one man over another, by the sanction of law, or common usage; extending, in some cases, to the taking of life, as among the ancient Romans; and in others, accompanied by certain restraints, imparting to it a mild and lenient character, as that which prevailed among the Israelites. Hence, the records of history exhibit this institution among the nations of antiquity, in different degrees of severity, between these two extremes. The term slavery, therefore, furnishes us with no just conceptions of the amount of evil embraced by it, and it becomes necessary in order to arrive at this knowledge, to inquire into its character in each particular case or nation. In justification of this institution in the United States, it is alleged, that slavery has existed in every age of the world; that the scriptures lend it their unqualified sanction; that the slavery now existing on the continent of Africa is in its character more rigorous than that in the United States; and hence, that the condition of the natives brought from that country, has been improved by the exchange. As these arguments intrude upon us at the threshold, we will give them a brief consideration, before entering upon the main subject of this treatise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Slavery: Considered as a Scriptural Institution IN compliance with the wish of my friend and brother, the Rev. Dr. Fuller, the joint author with me of the following pages, I offer a few words by way of introduction. The origin and progress of this correspondence may be thus briefly stated. In the month of November last, at the request of the editor of the Christian Reflector, Dr. Fuller addressed a letter to that paper, presenting in brief his reasons for believing that Domestic Slavery is sanctioned by the Scriptures, and is therefore not always a sin. In this letter several allusions were made to the publications on this subject both of the late lamented Dr. Charming and myself. Had this eminent man been spared to us, the duty of de fending what we both believed would have fallen into abler hands. It having pleased God to call him to his rest, this duty seemed to devolve upon me. I immediately communicated my intention to Dr. Fuller, and was gratified to learn that it met with his hearty concurrence. Book Slavery and the Domestic Slave Trade in the United States

Download or read book Slavery and the Domestic Slave Trade in the United States written by Ethan Allen Andrews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery and the Domestic Slave-Trade in the United States: In a Series of Letters Addressed to the Executive Committee of the American Union for the Relief and Improvement of the Colored Race The American Union for the Relief and Im provement of the Colored Race, was formed in Boston, in January, 1835. An exposition of the principles and plans of the Union was soon after published by the Executive Committee. One of the principal objects of the Society, as stated in that paper, is to collect and publish information of an authentic character respect ing Slavery. It is conceived that there is yet no inconsiderable dearth of well-prepared and trust-worthy facts respecting this great national evil. It is obvious that it cannot be peacefully removed, except as it is seen in its true light. It is in prosecution of this great branch of their labors, that the Committee present thefollowing Report concerning Slavery and the domestic slave-trade as it exists in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Coming, as it does, from a gentleman who is well acquainted with the whole subject of Slavery, from an actual residence of a number of years in a slave-holding state, it will be read with much interest and profit. It gives, in the opinion of the Committee, an accurate account of Slavery, and of the public sentiment respect ing it in the district of country visited. As such, it is respectfully commended to the atten tion of all the friends of the African race. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on Slavery and Emancipation Ejects of Slavery. I shall now Slightly speak of some Of the effects of slavery, which, though apparently indi rect, are necessary. We have seen how carefully all mental improvement was guarded against in the slave; and also how Slight was the protection of his person. His morals are not better cared for. Honesty is, to be sure, cherished, 01 may be presumed to be; although where temptation is all around, and the sanctions Of any virtue are so slight, this one cannot be secure. Another, quite as important to the character, though not to the master's interest, has less protection; that is chastity. It is perhaps idle to Speak Of what there is so little pretence of regarding. The domestic relations of the slave have no protection whatever in the law, and in practice, it' is nearly the same thing. The ceremony of marriage is sometimes performed by a clergyman or a justice, but quite as Often there is no farther preliminary to male and female living together, than simply taking each other's word, which is not thought very binding, for they divorce and marry again at pleasure. What a mockery indeed would be the marriage rites, with the solemn declaration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Slavery Illustrated in Its Effects Upon Woman and Domestic Society Classic Reprint written by George Bourne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery Illustrated in Its Effects Upon Woman and Domestic Society Deeply has the conviction been rooted, during the last twenty-five years, that the condition of American colored women, and the collateral topics included in the seventh commandment, are the most important theme in the Whole controversy upon slavery because it combines the ecclesias tical questions with all the grand moral points. Yet this vol ume probably would not at present have been promulged, had not the moral and religious warfare assumed a hideous char acter, not less fearful than it is astounding. As long as the sons of corruption pretended to justify or to palliate the enormities of slave-driving by the principles of carnal policy, or a temporising expediency, or worldly inter est, or any other of the pleas which plainly are branded with the mark of Cain, they might be repelled with mild weapons.
