Book The Problem of God Yesterday and Today

Download or read book The Problem of God Yesterday and Today written by John Courtney Murray and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1964-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an urbane and persuasive tract for our time, the distinguished Catholic theologian combines a comprehensive metaphysics with a sensitivity to contemporary existentialist thought. Father Murray traces the “problem of God” from its origins in the Old Testament, through its development in the Christian Fathers and the definitive statement by Aquinas, to its denial by modern materialism. Students and nonspecialist intellectuals may both benefit by the book, which illuminates the problem of development of doctrine that is now, even more than in the days of Newman, a fundamental issue between Roman Catholic and Protestant, theologians and nonspecialst intellectuals alike will find the subject of vital interest. As a challenge to the ecumenical dialogue, the question is raised whether, in the course of its development through different phases, the problem of God has come back to its original position. Father Murray is Ordinary professor of theology at Woodstock College, Woodstock, Maryland. St. Thomas More Lectures, 1. "A gem of a book—lucid, illuminating, brilliantly written. A fine contribution to the current Catholic theological renaissance."—Paul Weiss.

Book The Life and Diary of David Brainerd

Download or read book The Life and Diary of David Brainerd written by David Brainerd and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "He was one of distinguished natural abilities, as all are sensible who had acquaintance with him. As a minister of the gospel, he was called to unusual services in that work; and his ministry was attended by very remarkable and unusual events ... He had a peculiar opportunity of acquaintance with the false appearances and counterfeits of religion; was the instrument of a most remarkable awakening ...In the following account, the reader will have an opportunity to see not only what were the external circumstances and remarkable incidents of the life of this person, and how he spent his time from day to day, as to his external behavior; but also what passed in his own heart." --Jonathan Edwards David Brainerd, an early missionary to the American Indians in New York, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania, died in 1747 at the age of twenty-nine at the home of his long-time friend and supporter, the eminent Puritan theologian and preacher Jonathan Edwards. It is thanks to Edwards' careful preservation and thoughtful editing of his friend's Diary and Journal that Brainerd has influenced Christians all over the world for over 250 years. As he labored in what was still the untamed American frontier to bring the Gospel to the Indians, Brainerd faced many challenges, including depression, loneliness, and physical illness. Yet his genuine piety and single-minded devotion to God, both in heart and in practice, form a consistent backdrop to his turbulent inner world. This compilation offers a rare glimpse into the life of a man compelled by God to share His love with others in the most difficult of circumstances.

GLOVER and published by Gale Ecco, Print Editions. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book excerpt: MANY CHILDREN of GOD are so deeply exercised on the matter of guidance that it may be helpful to give a few suggestions as to knowing the way in which our Father would have us walk, and the work He would have us do. The importance of the subject cannot be exaggerated; so much of our power and peace consists in knowing where God would have us be, and in being just there. The manna only falls where the cloudy pillar broods; but it is certain to be found on the sands, which a few hours ago were glistening in the flashing light of the heavenly fire, and are now shadowed by the fleecy canopy of cloud. If we are precisely where our heavenly Father would have us to be, we are perfectly sure that He will provide food and raiment, and everything beside. When He sends His servants to Cherith, He will make even the ravens to bring them food. How much of our Christian work has been abortive because we have persisted in initiating it for ourselves, instead of ascertaining what God was doing, and where He required our presence! We dream bright dreams of success. We try to command it. We call to our aid all kinds of expedients, questionable or otherwise. At last we turn back, disheartened and ashamed, like children who are torn and scratched by the brambles, and soiled by the quagmire. None of this had come about if only we had been, from the first, under God's unerring guidance. He might test us, but He could not allow us to fail. "A little volume of meditations upon the nurture of a deeply religious life." -New Outlook "Discourses on the inner life of submission to the divine will as the secret of acquiring the sense of guidance. The line taken is 'practical,' dealing with various familiar methods of being good by various observances." -The Book News Monthly "As is well known, Mr. Meyer's style is vivid in description and most deeply spiritual in insight and application." -The Christian Advocate "Mr. Meyer has a gift of utterance in things spiritual such as few men of the present day possess." -Christian Work "God has certainly endowed Mr. Meyer with a peculiar gift in the matter of devotional writing....We have never seen a page in any of his books which was not calculated to create within the reader a desire to live nearer to Christ." -Central Baptist "Mr. Meyer breathes a spirit of devotion and faith. His writings are eminently scriptural, and calculated to aid the spiritual life. Though unostentatious in form and unassuming in style, his works are eminently the outpouring of a heart full of the love of God." -The Magazine of Christian Literature "Mr. Meyer writes fluently and forcibly of the deep things of God, and fosters spiritual hunger while he feeds it." -New York Observer "Few books of recent years are better adapted to instruct and help Christians than those of this author. He is a man mighty in the Scriptures." -D. L. Moody "Mr. Meyer is a great gain to the armies of evangelical truth for his tone, spirit and aspirations are all of a fine Gospel sort." -Charles Spurgeon "I do not believe that there is in the world today so helpful and practical, and at the same time so intensely spiritual a writer as this man." -Rev. F. W. Chapman, D. D.
