Book The Irish problem what lacks the backward farmer most security or skills

Download or read book The Irish problem what lacks the backward farmer most security or skills written by Hibernicus and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights a problem that is still prevalent today in many parts of the world - that of landlord/tenant relationships. Hibernicus postulates that while Ireland is a very fertile place much suited to farming, it is not as productive as it could be. Sometimes the problem is that the land is owned and leased out by people who are interested only in the income they get and not in making an effort to maximise the income. Other times the landlord is anxious to improve productivity but is met with resistance from his tenant farmers.

Book After the Famine

Download or read book After the Famine written by Michael Turner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Famine examines the recovery in Irish agriculture in the wake of the disastrous potato famine of the 1840s, and presents an annual agricultural output series for Ireland from 1850 to 1914. Michael Turner's detailed 1996 study is in three parts: he analyses the changing structure of agriculture in terms of land use and peasant occupancy; he presents estimates of the annual value of Irish output between 1850 and 1914; and he assesses Irish agricultural performance in terms of several measures of productivity. These analyses are placed in the context of British and European agricultural development, and suggest that, contrary to prevailing orthodoxies, landlords rather than tenants were the main beneficiaries in the period leading up to the land reforms. After the Famine is an important contribution to an extremely controversial area of Irish social and economic history.

Book Civilising rural Ireland

Download or read book Civilising rural Ireland written by Patrick Doyle and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The introduction of co-operative societies into the Irish countryside during the late-nineteenth century transformed rural society and created an enduring economic legacy. Civilising rural Ireland challenges predominant narratives of Irish history that explain the emergence of the nation-state through the lens of political conflict and violence. Instead the book takes as its focus the numerous leaders, organisers, and members of the Irish co-operative movement. Together these people captured the spirit of change as they created a modern Ireland through their reorganisation of the countryside, the spread of new economic ideas, and the promotion of mutually-owned businesses. Besides giving a comprehensive account of the co-operative movement’s introduction to Irish society the book offers an analysis of the importance of these radical economic ideas upon political Irish nationalism.

  • Author : Will Courtenay
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2011-05-09

  • Pages : 578 pages

Download or read book Dying to be Men written by Will Courtenay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masculinity has a powerful effect on the health of men and boys. Indeed, many of the behaviors they use to "be men" actually increase their risk of disease, injury, and death. In this book, Dr. Will Courtenay, an internationally recognized expert on men’s health, provides a foundation for understanding this troubling reality. With a comprehensive review of data and literature, he identifies specific gender differences in the health-related attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of men and boys and the health consequences of these differences. He then describes the powerful social, environmental, institutional, and cultural influences that encourage their unhealthy behaviors and constrain their adoption of healthier ones. In the book’s third section, he more closely examines the health needs of specific populations of men, such as ethnic-minority men, rural men, men in college, and men in prisons. Courtenay also provides four empirical studies conducted with multidisciplinary colleagues that examine the associations between masculinity and men and boys’ health beliefs and practices. Finally, he provides specific strategies and an evidence-based practice guideline for working with men in a variety of settings, as well as a look to the future of men’s health. Medical professionals, social workers, public health professionals, school psychologists, college health professionals, mental health practitioners, academics, and researchers from a broad array of disciplines, and anyone interested in this topic will find it to be an extensively researched and accessible volume.
