Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1968, this book was one of the first full-scale published studies of the principles of investment planning and of the structure of marginal costs in a public enterprise. The concepts involved were more developed and applied in the world's electricity industries than elsewhere, and this book will be of interest to both engineers and administrators who are concerned with electricity supply, by setting out the characteristics of investment planning in this sector and the implications for cost analysis.

Book The Economics of Regulation

Download or read book The Economics of Regulation written by Alfred E. Kahn and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1988-06-22 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board in the late 1970s, Alfred E. Kahn presided over the deregulation of the airlines and his book, published earlier in that decade, presented the first comprehensive integration of the economic theory and institutional practice of economic regulation. In his lengthy new introduction to this edition Kahn surveys and analyzes the deregulation revolution that has not only swept the airlines but has transformed American public utilities and private industries generally over the past seventeen years. While attitudes toward regulation have changed several times in the intervening years and government regulation has waxed and waned, the question of whether to regulate more or to regulate less is a topic of constant debate, one that The Economics of Regulation addresses incisively. It clearly remains the standard work in the field, a starting point and reference tool for anyone working in regulation.Kahn points out that while dramatic changes have come about in the structurally competitive industries - the airlines, trucking, stock exchange brokerage services, railroads, buses, cable television, oil and natural gas - the consensus about the desirability and necessity for regulated monopoly in public utilities has likewise been dissolving, under the burdens of inflation, fuel crises, and the traumatic experience with nuclear plants. Kahn reviews and assesses the changes in both areas: he is particularly frank in his appraisal of the effect of deregulation on the airlines. His conclusion today mirrors that of his original, seminal work - that different industries need different mixes of institutional arrangements that cannot be decided on the basis of ideology.

Book Current Issues in Project Analysis for Development

Download or read book Current Issues in Project Analysis for Development written by John Weiss and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over fifty years project analysis techniques have been applied in the assessment of development projects where poorly designed and appraised projects can waste scarce resources. This study examines the continued relevance of this approach, assesses methodological developments over this period and investigates current practical problems in the application of these techniques. This major work brings together authors with experience of both academic and operational project work to focus on issues such as the shadow exchange rate, the shadow wage, the discount rate and assessment of poverty impact and risk, as well as problems relating to specific sectors covering environmental projects, transport, education and health. There are also general chapters on the experience of semi-input–output-based estimation of shadow prices and the relevance of shadow pricing techniques to the context of developed economies in the EU. An overview by the editors sets out the evolution of the literature and highlights current issues. The general conclusion is that project analysis techniques remain relevant, albeit within a very different development context to that in which they were originally envisaged to be applied. With new perspectives on key economic parameters, this book will appeal to academics working on development, officials involved with project aid programmes, postgraduate students of development and professional economists working on development projects.

This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of violence as a contributory factor to urban poverty in Jamaica has gone largely unresearched. This paper outlines the results of a study undertaken by the World Bank and the government of Jamaica to focus on the issue. The study uses a participatory urban appraisal methodology in five poor urban areas, mainly in Kingston, to identify and understand local community perceptions of four different aspects of violence: its causes; its interrelationship with poverty; its impact on employment, economic and social infrastructure, and local social institutions; and ways in which government, communities, households, and individuals can work to reduce it.
