Book excerpt: Many therapeutic interventions for autism spectrum disorder fail when they are examined in a clinical trial. Frequently, there is a subset of patients that responds very well to the intervention, while others do not, and the overall result does not yield a positive result. As autism spectrum disorder is highly heterogeneous in its underlying genetics and other etiological risk factors, as well as its heterogeneous phenotypic manifestation, this variability in response to any specific treatment is not entirely surprising. However, it remains a challenge to meaningfully subtype this heterogeneity for targeted treatment. The purpose of this research topic is to solicit articles that address the heterogeneity in autism spectrum disorder in a manner that may meaningfully contribute to targeted treatment approaches. Studies that address the heterogeneity of autism that could theoretically lead to targeted treatment, and studies that more directly address the use of a marker in association with response to a treatment, are both aspects that will contribute to this purpose. It is hoped that this Research Topic will yield articles that can help advance the field towards precision medicine in autism spectrum disorders. Manuscripts that contribute to the specification of the heterogeneity of autism spectrum disorder in a manner that could theoretically lead to targeted treatment would be appropriate for this research topic. Additionally, articles that utilize subtyping in relation to response to treatment would be appropriate for this research topic.

Book excerpt: Features of the valid nominal species of Aprionodon Gill (isodon Valenciennes) and Hypoprion Müller and Henle (hemiodon Valenciennes, macloti Müller and Henle, and signatus Poey), plus those of a previously unrecognized species here described as Carcharhinus leiodon n.sp., are examined and compared with those of Carcharhinus Blainville. Features studied include morphometrics, vertebral numbers and other vertebral characteristics, tooth numbers, color pattern, and some other aspects of external morphology. It is concluded that on these features C. Leiodon n.sp. is entirely encompassed within the parameters of Carcharhinus, and that, although A. isodon, H. hemiodon, H. macloti, and H. signatus each extend the range of diversity of Carcharhinus in one or more features, A. isodon is not uniquely different from Carcharhinus, and there is no common pattern of difference between the three species of Hypoprion and Carcharhinus. Accordingly, and because the nature of the teeth of Aprionodon and Hypoprion has been found insufficient to warrant generic distinction from Carcharhinus, the genera Aprionodon and Hypoprion are synonymised with Carcharhinus. A diagnosis and description are given for each of the above species. The descriptions include measurements, counts, and line illustrations that show the whole shark in lateral view, underside of head, nostril, and teeth. The geographic distribution is summarized, as are also the meager biological data available on number of embryos, size at birth, size at sexual maturity, and maximum size.

The primary focus of the Age and Growth Program is to estimate ages from otoliths and other calcified structures for age-structured modeling of commercially exploited stocks; however, the program has recently expanded its interests to include numerous studies on topics ranging from age estimate validation to the growth and life-history of non-target species. Because so many applications rely upon age data and particularly upon assurances as to their accuracy and precision, the Age and Growth Program has developed this practical guide to document the age determination of key groundfish species from Alaskan waters. The main objective of this manual is to describe techniques specific to the age determination of commercially and ecologically important species studied by the Age and Growth Program. The manual also provides general background information on otolith morphology, dissection, and preparation, as well as descriptions of methods used to measure precision and accuracy of age estimates. This manual is intended not only as a reference for age readers at the AFSC and other laboratories, but also to give insight into the quality of age estimates to scientists who routinely use such data.
