Book Handbook of Bioceramics and Biocomposites

Download or read book Handbook of Bioceramics and Biocomposites written by Iulian Vasile Antoniac and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook describes several current trends in the development of bioceramics and biocomposites for clinical use in the repair, remodelling, and regeneration of bone tissue. Comprehensive coverage of these materials allows fundamental aspects of the science and engineering to be seen in close relation to the clinical performance of dental and orthopaedic implants. Bioceramics and biocomposites appear to be the most dynamic area of materials development for both tissue engineering and implantable medical devices. Almost all medical specialties will continue to benefit from these developments, but especially dentistry and orthopaedics. In this Handbook, leading researchers describe the use of bionanomaterials to create new functionalities when interfaced with biological molecules or structures. Also described are technologies for bioceramics and biocomposites processing in order to fabricate medical devices for clinical use. Another important section of the book is dedicated to tissue regeneration with development of new matrices. A targeted or personalized treatment device reduces drug consumption and treatment expenses, resulting in benefits to the patient and cost reductions for public health systems. This authoritative reference on the state-of-the-art in the development and use of bioceramics and biocomposites can also serve as the basis of instructional course lectures for audiences ranging from advanced undergraduate students to post-graduates in materials science and engineering and biomedical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION Esthetic dentistry can be defined as the art and science of dentistry, applied to create or enhance beauty of an individual within functional and physiological limits. Where as cosmetic dentistry is application of the principles of esthetics and certain illusionary principles, performed to signify or enhance beauty of an individual to suit the role he has to play in his day to day life or otherwise. Appearance is closely linked to social acceptance and professional success. No longer are people satisfied with just looking good, it must be coupled with a complete feeling of total well-being. Newer technologies are being harnessed for this purpose and advanced research is being undertaken. Thus, focus of dentistry in the present times is not only on prevention and treatment of disease but also on meeting the demands for better esthetics. Newer dental materials developed for esthetic enhancement are now chosen for their excellent mechanical as well as esthetic qualities. Esthetic dentistry is emerging as one of the most progressive and challenging branches of this field. Thus dentistry has evolved from a curative to a creative science in a very short span. The modern history of esthetic restorative materials was started with silicate cement, introduced by Fletcher in 1878, the principle anterior restorative material of those days. But, silicate cements were discouraged later on because of their poor strength, irritation to pulp tissue and brittleness. Even the nature of its setting and structure were but imperfectly understood. Self curing acrylic resin was introduced to the dental profession in the mid- 1950s. Initially used for the construction of denture bases, acrylic resin has also been used for many other purposes, including denture teeth, temporary restorations, intraoral splints and veneering agents for crowns and bridges. Since their introduction, acrylic based materials have continued to play a major role in restorative and prosthetic dentistry. But they too showed poor physical properties like high polymerization, shrinkage and coefficient of thermal expansion, irritation to pulp and dimensional instability. In attempt to improve their properties, and the potential for greater application of resins came about with the introduction of the bisphenol A and glycidyl methacrylate, or BIS-GMA, system by R Bowen in the early 1960s .

Book Dental Composite Materials for Direct Restorations

Download or read book Dental Composite Materials for Direct Restorations written by Vesna Miletic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers both basic scientific and clinically relevant aspects of dental composite materials with a view to meeting the needs of researchers and practitioners. Following an introduction on their development, the composition of contemporary composites is analyzed. A chapter on polymerization explains the setting reactions and light sources available for light-cured composites. The quality of monomer-to-polymer conversion is a key factor for material properties. Polymerization shrinkage along with the associated stress remains among the most challenging issues regarding composite restorations. A new classification of dental composites is proposed to offer more clinically relevant ways of differentiating between commercially available materials. A review of specific types of composites provides an insight into their key issues. The potential biological issues of dental composites are reviewed in chapters on elution of leachable substances and cariogenicity of resin monomers. Clinical sections focus on material placement, finishing procedures, and the esthetics and clinical longevity of composite restorations. Bonding to tooth tissues is addressed in a separate chapter, as is the efficiency of various composite repair methods. The final chapter discusses future perspectives on dental composite materials.

Download or read book Thermoplastic Elastomers written by Chapal Kumar Das and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), commonly known as thermoplastic rubbers, are a category of copolymers having thermoplastic and elastomeric characteristics. A TPE is a rubbery material with properties very close to those of conventional vulcanized rubber at normal conditions. It can be processed in a molten state even at elevated temperatures. TPEs show advantages typical of both rubbery materials and plastic materials. TPEs are a class of polymers bridging between the service properties of elastomers and the processing properties of thermoplastics. Nowadays, the best use of thermoplastics is in the field of biomedical applications, starting from artificial skin to many of the artificial human body parts. Apart from these, thermoplastic elastomers are being used for drug encapsulation purposes, and since they are biocompatible in many cases, their scope of applications has been broadened in the biotechnological field as well. The present book highlights many biological and biomedical applications of TPEs from which the broader area readers will benefit.

Download or read book Expert Level of Dental Resins Material Science Technology written by Ralf Janda and published by tredition. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resin materials are broadly used in dentistry for almost all indications, and they will gain even more importance in the future. Especially the increasing performance and efficiency of the CAD/CAM technology and 3D-printing open possibilities to use resins which were not used up to now in dentistry. Besides dentists, dental students or dental technicians, there are many other specialists such as researchers, material scientists, industrial developers or experts of adjoining professional disciplines who are technically engaged in dental resins. The "Expert Level" is the third book of the series "Dental Resins - Material Science & Technology". The "Expert Level" includes all information and data presented in the "Basic Level" and "Advanced Level" of this series, but enormously expands the knowledge base. From a total database of 8.198 references, 1.707 were selected and used for this textbook. It comprises more than 1,000 manuscript pages, 384 figures and 124 tables. The "Expert Level" describes very accurately and comprehensively all details of the material science and technology of dental polymers and composites. Furthermore, their production methods and applications are discussed in detail. Therefore, this book is a unique treatise of the complete present knowledge about dental resins and dental resin composites. This includes the discussion of the - raw/starting materials together with the explanation and presentation of their chemical structures and properties, their CAS Numbers and the names of the manufacturers. - amounts of the raw/starting materials usually used to formulate the finished products. - important material and toxicological properties of the starting materials and the finished products. - detailed description of the production processes of essential starting materials such as the syntheses of essential monomers, the silanization of inorganic fillers or the manufacturing of unfilled and filled splinter polymers. - detailed description of the formulation and the properties of the finished products. Furthermore, for many commercial endproducts rather detailed formulations as well as the exact production processes are described. All ISO standards that are relevant for dental resins are listed, too.
