Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the techniques of modern molecular biology continue to revolutionize experimental design in cell biology, mathematical modeling and analysis become increasingly necessary and feasible. The papers in this collection expand on invited lectures presented at the Symposium on Some Mathematical Questions in Biology: Cell Biology, held in November 1992 in Denver, Colorado. The work reviewed in the papers demonstrates the power of combining mathematics and experiment to study a number of cell processes, including: protein transport in nerve axons, formation of transport vesicles at the Golgi, molecular motion in cell membranes, cell adhesion, T lymphocyte activation, and cellular responses to receptor aggregation. The volume is an important contribution to the literature, as it introduces mathematicians to a growing application area and cell biologists to new tools and results. The individual articles can be used as readings in a course on mathematical modeling.

Download or read book Some Mathematical Questions in Biology sex Allocation and Sex Change written by Marc Mangel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1990-10-26 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seven articles in this volume are based on lectures presented at the annual symposium, Some Mathematical Questions in Biology, held in conjunction with the American Institute of Biological Sciences meeting in Toronto, Ontario in August 1989. Sexual selection, sex determination, and sex allocation have been at the center of evolutionary ecology since its inception and have played an important role in the development of many concepts. As this volume demonstrates, many key questions remain to be investigated through a combination of empirical and theoretical work. In addition, questions of sex provide a natural mechanism for crossing the great taxonomic divide by allowing plant and animal researchers to focus on similar kinds of questions using a wide variety of organisms.

Book excerpt: An introduction to catastrophe theory, a mathematical theory which deals with those changes which occur abruptly rather than smoothly. Includes many applications to illustrate the different ways in which catastrophe can be used in life, physical and social sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the philosophy of model use; focuses on the role of models in the natural sciences; and introduces a new paradigm to the social sciences, catastrophe model. It outlines the role of models concerned with conflict problems, particularly problems of military strategy.
Download or read book Mathematical Approaches to Problems in Resource Management and Epidemiology written by Carlos Castillo-Chavez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, mathematical methods are being used to advantage in addressing the problems facing humanity in managing its environment. Problems in resource management and epidemiology especially have demonstrated the utility of quantitative modeling. To explore these approaches, the Center of Applied Mathematics at Cornell University organized a conference in Fall, 1987, with the objective of surveying and assessing the state of the art. This volume records the proceedings of that conference. Underlying virtually all of these studies are models of population growth, from individual cells to large vertebrates. Cell population growth presents the simplest of systems for study, and is of fundamental importance in its own right for a variety of medical and environmental applications. In Part I of this volume, Michael Shuler describes computer models of individual cells and cell populations, and Frank Hoppensteadt discusses the synchronization of bacterial culture growth. Together, these provide a valuable introduction to mathematical cell biology.

This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Annual University of North Carolina Greensboro Regional Mathematics and Statistics Conference (UNCG RMSC) has provided a venue for student researchers to share their work since 2005. The 8th Conference took place on November 3, 2012. The UNCG-RMSC conference established a tradition of attracting active researchers and their faculty mentors from NC and surrounding states. The conference is specifically tailored for students to present the results of their research and to allow participants to interact with and learn from each other. This type of engagement is truly unique. The broad scope of UNCG-RMSC includes topics in applied mathematics, number theory, biology, statistics, biostatistics and computer sciences.

Download or read book Mathematical and Statistical Approaches to AIDS Epidemiology written by Carlos Castillo-Chavez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18 research articles of this volume discuss the major themes that have emerged from mathematical and statistical research in the epidemiology of HIV. The opening paper reviews important recent contributions. Five sections follow: Statistical Methodology and Forecasting, Infectivity and the HIV, Heterogeneity and HIV Transmission Dynamics, Social Dynamics and AIDS, and The Immune System and The HIV. In each, leading experts in AIDS epidemiology present the recent results. Some address the role of variable infectivity, heterogeneous mixing, and long periods of infectiousness in the dynamics of HIV; others concentrate on parameter estimation and short-term forecasting. The last section looks at the interaction between the HIV and the immune system.
