Book The Application of Contracts in Developing Offshore Oil and Gas Projects

Download or read book The Application of Contracts in Developing Offshore Oil and Gas Projects written by Philip Loots and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-03-14 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the key aspects and contracts involved in the process of developing oil and gas projects, with an emphasis on offshore developments. Project development in oil and gas carries with it numerous unique risks and challenges. By identifying and managing risk through the various contract stages, each stage of the project is seen in perspective and therefore gives readers a better understanding of how that stage was arrived at and what is expected to come later. To do this, the authors use illustrative international case studies from past and current projects, thereby deepening the reader’s understanding and awareness of risk from practical experience, as well as suggesting answers for those who are involved in developing oil and gas projects. The Application of Contracts in Developing Offshore Oil and Gas Projects is intended for project owners, project managers, contractors, finance managers, commercial managers and lawyers who seek to understand the subject from a practical point of view.

Book The Legal Regime of Offshore Oil Rigs in International Law

Download or read book The Legal Regime of Offshore Oil Rigs in International Law written by Hossein Esmaeili and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews and examines the relevant portions of all international treaties, cases and the national law and practice of states, in relation to international aspects of offshore oil rigs. By doing so, it offers an understanding of the legal regime surrounding oil rigs and formulates an international law framework. It investigates the issues under consideration by analyzing provisions of international law pertaining to all aspects of oil rigs, as well as international treaties and their travaux preparatoires. It also examines the national legislation of major offshore oil and gas producers and defines a framework of customary international entities such as the OSPAR and the petroleum industries of certain major offshore oil producers. Based upon the book's findings, it is clear that in spite of their increasing importance, offshore oil installations are subject to fragmentary and vague legal rules under international law.

Book Risk Allocation and Distributive Justice in the Energy Industry

Download or read book Risk Allocation and Distributive Justice in the Energy Industry written by Smith I Azubuike and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brings the concept of gross negligence to the fore and highlights how distributive justice forms a better foundation for risk allocation in the offshore energy industry Assessed the practice of risk allocation in gross negligence cases in offshore petroleum drilling contracts Presented a public policy perspective on risk allocation in offshore drilling contracts Discussed gross negligence as a sui generis risk and provides a definitional pathway for determining when gross negligence has occurred and how it should apply to offshore energy drilling contracts to encourage a pollution-free drilling operation Advanced the concept of distributive justice as a basis for risk allocation between participants when a downside arises due to gross negligence This book examines the practice of risk allocation in the offshore energy industry through the public policy lens and offers a novel perspective on the concept of gross negligence in risk allocation. This perspective is founded on the proportionality element of distributive justice in burden distribution. The assessment of how mutual indemnity clauses apply as an absolute shield against liability arising from gross negligence reveals that moral hazard can result from the practice. In the analysis, this book considers the risk allocation practice in PSC and Concession regimes and how parties' liability is determined in drilling contracts. This book considers gross negligence a sui generis risk and provides a definitional pathway for determining when gross negligence occurs and how it should apply to offshore drilling contracts. Thus, it advances an environmental sustainability approach to offshore petroleum drilling operations. This book will be useful to operators and contractors, resource-rich countries, insurance companies, practitioners, scholars, and academics interested in risk allocation in the petroleum industry.

Download or read book Offshore Medicine written by Robin A.F. Cox and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To be asked to prepare a second edition of a book is heartening for any author or editor. Apart from the opportunity to make the corrections and amendments which are inevitable in a practical manual there is also the possibility to make additions which enhance its usefulness. Above all a further edition usually means that the book has been found to be accept able to a large number of readers and has fulfilled a need. This is indeed the case with Offshore Medicine, which in its description of the medical aspects of offshore work has provided a unique guide to the occupational health of a new industry. The rapid development of offshore exploration for gas and oil which began in the 1960s created a whole new range of related industries. Most attention was focused on the problems of deep diving in the North Sea because of the great expansion of the diving industry, its technological advances and the high mortality of divers in the early years. Diving, however, is only a fraction of the total endeavour concerned with the offshore industry. The much larger population of workers offshore who man the rigs and barges, the toolpushers, helicop ter pilots, crane drivers, scaffolders and roustabouts, geologists and so on, so sympathetically described by A. Alvarez in his recent book Off shore, A North Sea Journey, and the harsh and difficult conditions in which they often have to work are sometimes forgotten.

Book excerpt: Given the magnitude of the risks associated with commercial activities in the Arctic arising as a result of the milder climate, new business opportunities raise important questions of responsibility and liability. This book analyses the issues of responsibility and liability connected with the exploitation of natural resources, marine transport and other activities in the Arctic. Applying a combined private and public law perspective on these issues, it considers both the business and societal interests related to Arctic development using Greenland as an example. The book focuses on problems that are specific to Greenland and wider issues that affect all Arctic states.

Book UK deepwater drilling implications of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill

Download or read book UK deepwater drilling implications of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Energy and Climate Change Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 20 April 2010, a blowout of BP's Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico led to the deaths of 11 workers on Transocean's Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, and the release of an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil. The European Commission called for a moratorium but the UK government decided its regulatory controls were fit for purpose. However a full review of the oil and gas environmental regulatory regime would be undertaken. The Committee believes that the UK has high regulatory standards - as exemplified by the Safety Case regime that was set up in response to the 1988 Piper Alpha tragedy in 1988. The blowout in the Gulf of Mexico could have been prevented if the last-line of defence - the blind shear ram on the blowout preventer had activated and crushed the drill pipe. Given the importance of this equipment the committee recommends prescribing specifically that blowout preventers should have two blind shear rams and that simple, potential failures mustn't be left unchecked. The Committee also recommends that the Bly report conclusions, BP's internal investigation, be considered alongside observations of other companies involved. They believe that should an oil spill resulting from drilling activities occur in the UK there needs to be an absolute clarity as to the identity of the responsible party, and that liability legislation needs to ensure prompt compensation. They conclude that any calls for increased oversight of the UK offshore industry should be rejected in favour of multilateral approaches to regulation and oil spill response
