Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some General Ideas Concerning Medical Reform It was in this age that medicine underwent that great change from which her modern history is to be dated; it was then that she shook off the stupor of scholasticism and began her toilsome, unsteady march, - a march of conquest for the most part. But one in which many useless burdens have retarded her freest progress, and where many devious by-ways threatened to bring as into interminable wildernesses. The course still lies far beyond. The horizon only bounds our vision. The distant, purple hills are steep and rugged, and the smiling plain is dry and bar ren. Each is fraught with its peculiar dangers, and it is with a view of meeting these that we study the history of the journey already accomplished. The country may seem strange to one who has not reviewed the past. Or to one who compares the morning and evening of a day yet, by examining the chronicles with care, we shall find that our fathers struggled with similar obstacles to those which obstruct our progress in the present day. The records of their failures and successes are a precious heri tage, at present strangely undervalued. Let os hope that the. Time is not far distant when the broken circle of medical educa tion shall have added this segment of medical history toward its completion. Book Benchmarks of Fairness for Health Care Reform

Download or read book Benchmarks of Fairness for Health Care Reform written by Norman Daniels and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American health system has been critiqued widely in recent years for its many flaws. A common complaint has been that our system is unfair, a concern that comes from providers as well as consumers and from both public and private sectors. This bookaims to develop a framework for measuring various health reform proposals and current trends in relation to underlying social values in the U.S. In so doing, it seeks to expose social values that are at stake in current and future changes. At the heart of this book is the question: If the current situation is perceived to be unfair, will the future improve or worsen our situation? Targeted primarily for policy makers in government and throughout the health sector, this book will also stimulate graduate students in the health and social sciences. A wide audience will find the book of interest in providing a different perspective as to how current trends and specific legislative and policy proposals stack up against the authors' ten benchmarks of fairness. The book makes very limited use of illustrations, although tables provide understandable summaries of the concepts and their application in scoring proposals and trends. References are ample and pertinent. This is a stimulating and provocative work that shifts our focus to the collective social values at stake in an evolving health system. The book argues that our current system is unfair both in comparison to our values and the approaches taken throughout the rest of the industrialized world. Its sobering message is that the gap between what we value and what we have will likely increase until we recognize what is at stake.

Download or read book Science and Ethics in American Medicine 1800 1914 written by Harris Livermore Coulter and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 1982 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divided Legacy (Vols. I-IV) is a history of Western medical philosophy from the time of Hippocrates to the twentieth century, treating it as a unified system of thought rather than a series of fortuitous discovers. Dr. Coulter interprets the development of medical ideas as the product of a conflict between two opposed systems of thought, Empiricism and Rationalism. This third volume of Divided Legacy continues the account of the conflict between the Empirical and the Rationalist approaches to therapeutics but introduces a socio-economic dimension which had earlier been lacking. In the early nineteenth century, Samuel Hahnemann’s formulation of the Empirical therapeutic doctrine, which he called homeopathy. It flourished especially in the United States. This volume traces the history of the rise and decline of this formulation of Empirical therapeutics in the nineteenth century United States. It analyzes the interaction between the homeopathic doctrines and those of the orthodox school and attempts to illustrate the influence of socio-economic constraints on the movement of medical thought during this period.
