Book excerpt: The theta pinch was studied in an apparatus which generates a 10,000-gauss magnetic field parallel to the axis f a cylindrical pinch tube. The field rises to full value in about 1.5 micro seconds and remains virtually constant for 7 micro seconds. The compression of a strongly pre-ionized deuterium plasma by the applied field and the subsequent radial oscillations of the plasma column were observed by means of magnetic probes, streak photography, and Kerr cell photography. Outward radial streaming of the plasma is observed in a configuration suggesting the flute instability. Axial streaming of the plasma out the ends of the drive strap is also detected. The radial oscillation frequency and the time of arrival of the incoming plasma surface at a prescribed radius are compared with predicted values based on phenomenological theories. (Author).

Book excerpt: This paper summarizes results of the Los Alamos theta-pinch program in three areas of investigation. (1) In the Staged Theta Pinch results are reported on the effects of magnetic field amplitude and time history of plasma formation. (2) In the Implosion Heating Experiment density, internal-magnetic-field and neutron measurements yield a consistent picture of the implosion which agrees with kinetic computations and with a simple dynamic model of the ions and magnetic piston. (3) In the Scyllac Feedback-Sector Experiment the l = 1, 0 equilibrium plasma parameters have been adjusted to accommodate the feedback stabilization system. With a uniform toroidal discharge tube the m = 1 instability is feedback-stabilized in the vertical direction, and confinement in the toroidal direction is extended by feedback control. We also report results with a helical discharge tube.

Book excerpt: A theoretical model of magnetic pulse propagation in collisionless plasmas is derived starting from the Vlasov equation. The model consists of a set of fluid equations which include the effects of turbulence self-consistently through "anomalous" transport terms which evolve in space and time as instabilities develop and as the macroscopic plasma parameters change. Results from numerical integration of these equations explain most of the phenomena of a theta pinch experiment with no initial magnetic field and with small pulsed fields. There was similar agreement with the gross penetration times and effects of changing density in theta pinch experiments with initial bias fields and large pulsed fields. Probable causes of the remaining differences are discussed.

Included is a brief discussion of the theory of shock wave generation and propagation in a plasma along with experimental verification of reproducible hydrodynamic shock waves of Mach about 16 produced in a neutral Argon gas at 0.1 torr. Calculations based on the theory of shock wave thicknesses (3 cm.) are compared to observed values (10 cm.) at this pressure. An outline of proposed future experiments at the Plasma Facility is included in the recommendations. (Author).
