This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Economic Aspects of British Rule in India I do not forget that there are worthy exceptions to the generality of our public men, like Mr. Dadabhai N aorop, who for a long time stood alone among educated Indians as a student and expounder of Indian economics. The late Mr. M. G. Ranade has also left valuable records of his views on the same. And latterly M r. R. C. Dutt, by his Economic History of India' and other writings, has placed the Indian people under obligation. I may mention Mr. I). E.wacha, and the Hon: M r. G. K. Go'khale among other Indians who hate thrown light on' economic and fiscal questions by their various public utterances and writings. Still, in my humble opinion, these questions should be more generally studied by our politicians and journalists than is the case at present and their Views should be more largely diffused among the classes that take an interest in public affairs. In the following pages I endeavour to make a small contri hutien towards this end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Born of the people, trusted by the people, I will die for the people." Charles Bradlaugh, in Bombay, 28th December, 1889. "The government of a people by itself has a meaning and a reality; but such a thing as government of one people by another does not and cannot exist. One people may keep another for its own use, a place to make money in, a human catte farm to be worked for the profit of its own inhabitants." John Stuart Mill. Book The Economic History of India

Download or read book The Economic History of India written by Romesh Dutt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic History of India: Under Early British Rule; From the Rise of the British Power in 1757 to the Accession of Queen Victoria in 1837 Excellent works on the military and political trausse tions of the British in India have been written by eminent historians. N 0 history of the people of India, of their trades, industries, and agriculture, and of their economic condition under British administration, has yet been compiled. Recent famines in India have attracted attention to this very important subject, and there is a general and widespread desire to understand the condition of the Indian people - the sources of their wealth and the causes of their poverty. A brief Economic History of British India is therefore needed at the present time. Englishmen can look back on their work in India, if not with unalloyed satisfaction, at least with some legitimate pride. They have conferred on the people of India what is the greatest human blessing - Peace. They have introduced Western Education, bringing an ancient and civilised nation in touch with modern thought, modern sciences, modern institutions and life. They have built up an Administration which, though it requires reform with the progress of the times, is yet strong and efficacious. They have framed wise laws, and have established Courts of Justice, the purity of which is as absolute as in any country on the face of the earth. These are results which no honest critic of British work in India regards without high admiration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book India in the Victorian Age

Download or read book India in the Victorian Age written by Romesh Dutt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India in the Victorian Age: An Economic History of the People Six years ago, there was a celebration in London which was like a scenic representation of the Unity of the British Empire. Men from all British Colonies and Dependencies came together to take part in the Diamond Jubilee of a Great Queen's reign. Indian Princes stood by the side of loyal Canadians and hardy Australians. The demonstration called forth an outburst of enthusiasm seldom witnessed in these islands. And to thoughtful minds it recalled a long history of bold enterprises, arduous struggles, and a wise conciliation, which had cemented a world-wide Empire. Nations, living in different latitudes and under different skies, joined in a celebration worthy of the occasion. One painful thought, however, disturbed the minds of the people. Amidst signs of progress and prosperity from all parts of the Empire, India alone presented a scene of poverty and distress. A famine, the most intense and the most widely extended yet known, deso lated the country in 1897. The most populous portion of the Empire had not shared its prosperity. Increasing wealth, prospering industries, and flourishing agriculture, had not followed the flag of England in her greatest dependency. Book Economics of British India

Download or read book Economics of British India written by Jadunath Sarkar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics of British India First edition (143 pp.), March, 1909. Second edition (304 pp.), March, 1911. Third edition (336 pp.), March, 1913. Four edition (384 pp.), April, 1917. In this edition the book has been thoroughly revised, the statistics brought up to date, and a chapter on the economic effects of the war on India added. So rapid is the economic transformation of India going on before our eyes and so fast is the literature on various aspects of it growing up, that a general account of the subject requires to be mostly re-written every six years, and not only have new facts to be noted but even the old conclusions have to be greatly modified in the light of the new facts. Such a restudy has been attempted in the present edition. Throughout the book I have taken 1913-14, the last year of peace, as the standard of comparison and the basis of study. But the changes effected by the war have been duly noted in various places and studied together in the last chapter (X), which is altogether new; and the statistics of 1917 as far as available have been supplied. Among the more important additions are the inquiry into High Prices, the Report of the Royal Commission on Indian Currency (1914), recent developments of co-operation and our war finance and traffic changes. Download or read book Inglorious Empire written by Shashi Tharoor and published by Penguin Group. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inglorious Empire' tells the real story of the British in India from the arrival of the East India Company to the end of the Raj, revealing how Britain's rise was built upon its plunder of India. In the eighteenth century, India's share of the world economy was as large as Europe's. By 1947, after two centuries of British rule, it had decreased six-fold. Beyond conquest and deception, the Empire blew rebels from cannon, massacred unarmed protesters, entrenched institutionalised racism, and caused millions to die from starvation. British imperialism justified itself as enlightened despotism for the benefit of the governed, but Shashi Tharoor takes on and demolishes this position, demonstrating how every supposed imperial "gift" - from the railways to the rule of law -was designed in Britain's interests alone. He goes on to show how Britain's Industrial Revolution was founded on India's deindustrialisation, and the destruction of its textile industry.

Download or read book India The Real India Vol 19 Classic Reprint written by John David Rees and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India; The Real India, Vol. 19 British Government, showing how much more favourable to the landowner and cultivator it is than that of its predecessors in title, whose system, nevertheless, it closely follows. The constitution of the Government of India is explained, its financial system, the policy pursued towards the native states and on the frontier, the causes and char acter of the present unrest, and the connection therewith of the Hindoo Congress, the character of the reforms sug gested by M. Morley and Lord Minto, and now under the consideration of the local administration and of the general public, are all fully set forth. A chapter follows on social reform, and incidentally some account is given of the domestic life of the Indians, a fascinating subject, and a mirror, in many respects, of life in the pantheistic and polytheistic times, with which those are familiar, who read the classics in school. A final chapter deals with the economic conditions of the country, and the economic policy of the Government of India. The work is avowedly and frankly written from the British point of View, and this should be borne in mind while reading the author's most instructive} account of the attitude of the English official mind towards the great and important questions with which the English Govern ment has to deal in administering the affairs of the enor mous agglomeration of different races, for the peace and safety of which it is responsible. Book England s Debt to India

Download or read book England s Debt to India written by Lajpat Rai and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England's Debt to India: A Historical Narrative of Britain's Fiscal Policy in India This book is a kind of companion volume to my other book, "Young India." In "Young India," I have discussed British rule in India, from the political standpoint. In this volume, I have discussed its economic effects. There is not a single statement in this volume which is not supported by the best available British testimony, official and non-official. My own opinions and personal knowledge have been mentioned only incidentally if at all. Similarly the opinions of other Indian publicists have been kept in the background. It is a sad commentary on the prevailing moral code of the world that those who succeed in imposing their rule upon less powerful nations should also brand the latter as unworthy of credit. Thus every Britisher believes that an Indian critic of British rule is necessarily affected by the "inevitable racial and political bias" of his position, while he in his turn is entirely free from it! In the ordinary course of nature, the man whom the shoe pinches is the best person to know about it but in politics the laws of nature are reversed. In judging of governments and rulers, it is they whose word is to be accepted and not that of the governed and the ruled. Consequently to avoid that charge I have chosen to speak from the mouths of the English themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Real India Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Real India Classic Reprint written by J. D. Rees and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real India I Accepted an invitation, without which I would not have embarked upon such an undertaking, to write this book because among the many works lately published on India, most are avowedly written from the point of view of the tourist, and many, avowedly or otherwise, for party and political purposes, while others have their origin in disappointment or resentment, and some are frankly seditious and disloyal. It seemed to me a duty to accept, while so many and great slanders upon our fellow-countrymen in India are published, and while the real India and its inhabitants are overlooked amidst the din of controversy, the screams of sedition from Bengal, the cries of the party of the Hindoo Congress, and the writings and speeches of such as, even if they have visited India, were there delivered over blindfolded and tongue-tied to the interested interpreter. The first chapter contains a sketch of the past history of India, showing the perpetual state of warfare and oppression which existed up to the time of the Mogul Empire, and how little good government was enjoyed by the people during the latter period which is now represented by agitators as the Golden Age. Book Rise and Fall East India

Download or read book Rise and Fall East India written by Ramkrishna Mukherjee and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1974 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable study of the British East India Company offers great insight into the formation of the Company, its impact on both England and India, and the social forces that shaped its development. With great detail and rich documentation, Ramkrishna Mukherjee examines a period of 258 years, beginning immediately before the Company's birth and ending with its collapse in 1858. This is an engrossing work that reveals much about what is no doubt one of the most important institutions in the history of British colonialism and of world capitalism generally.

Book Traditional Industry in the Economy of Colonial India

Download or read book Traditional Industry in the Economy of Colonial India written by Tirthankar Roy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-11-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of workers in South Asia are employed in industries that rely on manual labour and craft skills. Some of these industries have existed for centuries and survived great changes in consumption and technology over the last 150 years. In earlier studies, historians of the region focused on mechanized rather than craft industries, arguing that traditional manufacturing was destroyed or devitalized during the colonial period, and that modern industry is substantially different. Exploring new material from research into five traditional industries, Tirthankar Roy s book contests these notions, demonstrating that while traditional industry did evolve during the Industrial Revolution, these transformations had a positive rather than destructive effect on manufacturing generally. In fact, the book suggests, the major industries in post-independence India were shaped by such transformations. Tirthankar Roy s book offers new and penetrating insights into India s economic and social history.
