Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Science: Divine Healing in Judaism, With Special Reference to the Jewish Scriptures and Prayer Book But the belief in Faith Cure is not merely a literary antique of Israel. In its zigzagging course, Judaism gave birth to a movement which was the historical expression of Jewish Science. Two centuries before Christian Science appeared, the Jews of Russia, Poland and Galicia initiated the Chasidic movement, which antedated and anticipated Christian Science, Theosophy, New Thought and similar cults. Chasidism which began in the Eighteenth Century spread like wildfire through central Europe, and the wonder-rabbi, Baal Shem Tob, or Besht became to the Chasidim what Mary Baker Eddy is to the Christian Scientists. This remarkable and unique Jewish sect will be carefully treated in Chapter II, entitled The Chasidic Movement. It is important to note that this movement still exists in Russia and Poland, and that Jewish Science is a living reality to millions of Jews in those countries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism as Creed and Life Thus much in reply to the possible charge that I have given a mere anthology, - that I have provided a collection of elegant extracts at the cost of ignoring the less attrac tive teachings. I have certainly made many quotations, especially in the section on Ethics. But I have done so intentionally. My aim has been to give some idea of the nobility of thought which characterises the Jewish doctrine of post-biblical times. The passages I have cited are but specimens of the vast moral and spiritual wealth to be found in the Talmudic and medieval literatures. Book Jewish Theology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jewish Theology Classic Reprint written by S. Levy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Theology Dr. Kohler does not explain how he arrives at this division of his subject. He does not state on what principles it is based. In the absence of any clear guidance, it appears at first sight to be drawn on arbitrary lines, and the thoughtful reader finds himself compelled to come to the author's rescue. The writer's first step has been presumably to take Theology in its literal sense as theory concerning God. Therefore the first great section deals with God. But as God cannot be said to exist unless there is man to recognise. His existence, a second main division is devoted to Man. Finally, as the work isa treatise on Jewish Theology in particular, and not on Theology in general, there follows a third and final portion entitled Israel and the Kingdom of God. Book The Fundamental Principles of Modern Judaism Investigated

Download or read book The Fundamental Principles of Modern Judaism Investigated written by Moses Margoliouth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Principles of Modern Judaism Investigated: Together With a Memoir of the Author The object of the present volume is to bring before the Christian public some information as to the present state of religion among the Jews, both with respect to the Cere monial and the Moral Law; and as it'may excite some surprise that there should be room or occasion for such a publication; as it seems strange, that the religious prao tices, and even the moral principles of a people like the Jews Should be still a subject for enquiry, I feel that the object of the publication may be assisted, and the prefatory remarks which I undertook to add may be most conducive to the purpose proposed, if I endeavour to direct the reader to the causes which separated the Jews from the Gentile Church, and have thrown such a cloud over the usages of God's ancient people. Up to a certain period the Jews are regarded, and with justice, as the depositories of all that can be known of God. To them pertained the adeption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God and the promises. Theirs were the fathers, and of them, as concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Aspects of Rabbinic Theology This last circumstance - besides being productive of bitter polemics, as just hinted at - could not fail to create new theological values, as the modern phrase is, leading, for instance, to the emphasis upon the significance of the Law and even the Oral Law and other doctrinal points, which, though questioned by none, were never before stated with such distinct ness and in such a challenging manner. Book From Christian Science to Jewish Science

Download or read book From Christian Science to Jewish Science written by Ellen M. Umansky and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, thousands of American Jews were drawn to the teachings of Christian Science. Viewing such attraction with alarm, American Reform Rabbis sought to counter Christian Science's appeal by formulating a Jewish vision of happiness and health. Unlike Christian Science, it acknowledged the benefits of modern medicine yet, sharing the belief in God as the true source of healing, similarly emphasized the power of visualization and affirmative prayer. Though the numbers of those formally affiliated with Jewish would remain small, its emphasis on the connection between mind and body influenced scores of rabbis and thousands if not hundreds of thousands of American Jews, predating contemporary Jewish interest in spiritual healing by more than seventy years. Examining an important and previously unwritten chapter in the story of American Judaism, this book sheds light on religious and social concerns of twentieth-century American Jewry, including ways in which adherence to Jewish Science helped thousands bridge the perceived gap between Judaism and modernity.

Book Science and Religion

Download or read book Science and Religion written by Joshua M. Moritz and published by Anselm Academic Christian Brothers Pub.. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the many virtues of Joshua Moritz's well-structured and wide-ranging introduction to the relation between science and religion is its resourceful use of historical scholarship to illuminate the origins and demonstrate the limitations of an all-pervasive conflict model. Ambitious and controversial in its bid to replace conflict with peace at every opportunity, Science and Religion will be accessible and stimulating for a general audience, as well as constituting what will prove to be a successful student text." --John Hedley Brooke University of Oxford What happens when religious faith meets scientific facts? Many believe that conflict defines the relationship between science and religion, especially the Christian religion. But the war between faith and science is a myth--a very popular myth--that has endured for too long. By investigating the root of this myth and reexamining its classic stories, Science and Religion: Beyond Warfare and Toward Understanding offers a more accurate relationship between science and religion. With a focus on Christianity, the text explores causes of contemporary conflicts and cases in which science and religion have interacted in mutually beneficial ways to demonstrate that, in the relationship between science and religion, harmony is more common than discord. Joshua M. Moritz is a lecturer of philosophical theology and natural science at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and an adjunct professor of philosophy at the University of San Francisco.
