Book The Philosophy of the V llabha School of V danta

Download or read book The Philosophy of the V llabha School of V danta written by Kē Nārāyaṇa and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: Suddhadvaita or the system of Pure Monism of Sri Vallabhacarya claims to be the most faithful and authentic exposition of the real teachings of the Upanisads as it purifies the Non-Dual Ultimate Reality of the extraneous concept of Maya introduced by Samkara under the influence of Buddhism. In this system we have the concept of Non-Dualism or Advaita in its pristine, Upanisadic sense unblemished by Samkara's Illusionism, the concept of a Concrete, Personal and determinate Ultimate Reality. In recent years many important works expounding the philosophy of Sri Vallabhacarya have been published but none of them have endeavoured a problem-wise study of this system which is essential for its proper understanding vis-a-vis the claims of other Vaisnavite schools. This book attempts to supplement this want by under-taking a problem-wise exposition of the philosophy of Sri Vallabha and his followers incorporating the views and solutions of other schools as well. Vallabhism as a philosophico-religious creed of Vaisnavism has the distinction of putting forward a novel creed and theory of Bhakti known as Pusti-bhakti which acquires a central place in the Suddhadvaita system. The author has, therefore, discussed it, at length, to distinguish it from other forms of Bhakti propagated in other schools of Vaisnavism. The author has, in this study, based himself only on Samskrta sources providing the reader with an outline of the basic philosophical and religious theories and concepts of Sri Vallabhacarya and his followers.

Book Essays on Vedanta and Western Philosophies

Download or read book Essays on Vedanta and Western Philosophies written by Arun Chatterjee and published by Lotus Press. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical issues such as reality and appearance, God and world, self and not-self, rebirth and immortality, free will and determination, mysticism, etc., have been examined by eastern and western philosophers as far back as the sages of Upanishads (700 BCE) in the East, and Plato (400 BCE) in the West. However, there was no significant communication among the philosophers of the East and West perhaps until the eighteenth century. Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was one of the first among the great western philosophers to recognize the value of Indian philosophies. Despite the lack of communication there are striking similarities of concepts and issues addressed by Indian and western philosophies. Also interesting is how similar are the mystical versions of different religions of the East and West. The author, Dr. Arun Chatterjee, has attempted to bring out the similarities and differences in various chapters of this book dealing with different topics. Among Indian philosophies the focus is on Vedanta philosophy and the views of Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950). The views of Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) also are presented. Other Indian philosophies such as Sankhya and Buddhism are discussed briefly. Among western religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are discussed.

Book excerpt: Vedanta literally means 'the end of the Vedas'. The Upanisads may be regarded as the end of the Vedas also in the sense that they mark the culmination of the Vedic speculation. Besides, the Upanisads were regarded as the inner or secret meanings of the Vedas, hence their teachings were sometimes called Vedopanisad or the Mystery of the Vedas. The work entitled 'Aspects of the Vedanta' is a collection of articles, written various eminent scholars of Sanskrit and Philosophy. The articles are now revised and further added with diacritical marks for proper reading/pronunciation of the Sanskrit terms. Besides, Glossary and Index are also appended in the book for the benefit of researches and general readers of Philosophy and Religion

Book Philosophy and Argument in Late Ved nta

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Srihar~a is recognised as one of the greatest exponents of what is generally known as the Sarpkara school of Advaita Vedanta. The Advaita Vedanta of Sarpkara has been commented upon, explained, expounded and developed in its various ramifications by several generations of scholars, commentators and original thinkers for over a thousand years. Even today it is claimed to be one of the two traditional schools of Indian Philosophy which have survived and have modern adherents while most other schools have died of old age on Indian soil. The only other school that has survived is the Nyaya-Vaise~ika or what is now called the Navya-nyaya. Both Advaita Vedanta and Navya-nyaya have attracted the attention of modern scholars and philosophers (of both India and abroad), who are acquainted with Western philosophy and whose interest in the study of Indian philosophy has not simply been limited to the history of Indian thought or Indology. Modern exponents of Advaita Vedanta are numerous. With a few notable exceptions, however, most modern authors of Vedanta try to expound and modernise the Advaita system from either a speculative and personal point of view or from a superficial viewpoint of Kantian philosophy or Hegelian Absolutism. Such a method has seldom achieved the sophistication and respectability that is normally expected in the context of modern (chiefly western) philosophic activity.

Book The Advaita Tradition in Indian Philosophy

Download or read book The Advaita Tradition in Indian Philosophy written by Candradhara Śarmā and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 1996 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is a comparative and critical study of Shunyavada, Vijnanavada, Advaita Vedanta and Kashmira Shaivism, the four main systems of Advaitavada or spiritual non-dualism which has been the most celebrated tradition in Indian philosophy. It is based on the author s study of original sources and when dealing with fundamental issues original texts are either quoted or referred to. The points of similarity and of difference among these systems are discussed in detail and with great clarity. Professor Sharma, with his unique gift of expressing abstruse metaphysical thoughts in a clear language, has eminently succeeded in correcting some misconceptions and in clarifying many difficult and obscure points about these systems. This work is indeed a masterly survey of Mahayana Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta and kashmira Shaivism which brings into rominence the author s original contributions some of which are of outstanding merit for a correct appreciation of the relation among these systems. The Advaita Tradition in Indian Philosophy will be found eminently useful by the students of philosophy in universities and colleges and also by all those who are interested in Buddhism, Vedanta and Kashmira Shaivism and who want a clear and accurate exposition of the development of the Advaita tradition in Indian philosophical thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the oldest philosophical texts of the world, the Vedas have always aroused much scholarly curiosity among people from all disciplines. Esteemed philosophy scholar Paul Deussen rigorously and systematically studied the Vedanta. Using the premises of Plato and Kant to solve the fundamental problem of causality posed to the Advaita Vedanta, he paved the way for the dialogue between Indian and western philosophy. Although Deussen found the Advaitic principles to be of the greatest value to mankind, he objectively examines the conflicts within Sankara s thought in The Philosophy of the Vedanta and the Vedantasara. A full compilation of Sadananda Yogendra s Vedantasara is provided with an in-depth enquiry into each verse accompanied by critical notes from various intellectual sources. The Sanskrit verses have also been given in their original script.

Book A History of Early Ved nta Philosophy

Download or read book A History of Early Ved nta Philosophy written by Hajime Nakamura and published by South Asia Books. This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Vedanta school is well known since the time of Sankaracarya on, and its prehistory before Sankara is quite obscure. However, from the time of compilation of major Upanisads to Sankara there is a period of thousand years, and the tradition of Upanisads was not lost; there appeared many philosophers and dogmaticians, although their thoughts are not clearly known. The author has made clear the details of the pre-Sankara Vedanta philosophy, utilizing not only Sanskrit materials, but also Pali, Prakrit (Jain), as well as Tibetan and Chinese sources. In this respect this is quite a unique work. For this work the author was awarded the Imperial Prize by the Academy of Japan. Some sections of this work were already published in Indian as well as European and American journals in English. This work is a complete English translation of the entire book. The English translation was done with the financial aid by the Harvard-Yenching Institute, and the final touch was given by Mr. Trevor Leggett, the British writer, who is well-versed in Sanskrit as well as in Japanese.
