Book excerpt: For the diallel crossing system involving p(p-1)/2 possible crosses among p lines, the linear yield equation, the estimated effects, the sums of squares in the analysis of variance, and the expected values for the various sums of squares under different models are described. A number of different definitions or models are given for both fixed and random genetic effects. Under these descriptions, it is shown how to obtain the several published forms of the ex pectations for the sums of squares among the estimated combining ability effects for the ith line. Thus, all published forms are correct, but different models or definitions were utilized to obtain each form. The specific combining ability variance for the ith line is redefined in such a manner as to make the genotypic variance in the absence of epistatic effects, equal to twice the sum of the general combining ability variance (additive variance the square of sigma sub alpha) and the specific combining ability vari ance (non-additive variance the square of sigma sub alpha). The currently used definition of specific combining ability variance requires that the genotypic variance be 2 the square of sigma sub alpha the square of sigma sub alpha rather than the redefined form of 2(the square of sigma sub alpha the square of sigma sub alpha) as suggested herein. The common goal of science, industry and the public opens wide vistas and great hopes for biotechnology. Industry is particularly concerned with the phar maceutical field and microbial biotechnology from which profitable return§ can accrue. Book excerpt: Although aquaculture as a biological production system has a long history, systematic and efficient breeding programs to improve economically important traits in the farmed species have rarely been utilized until recently, except for salmonid species. This means that the majority of aquaculture production (more than 90 %) is based on genetically unimproved stocks. In farm animals the situation is vastly different: practically no terrestrial farm production is based on genetically unimproved and undomesticated populations. This difference between aquaculture and livestock production is in spite of the fact that the basic elements of breeding theory are the same for fish and shellfish as for farm animals. One possible reason for the difference is the complexity of reproductive biology in aquatic species, and special consideration needs to be taken in the design of breeding plans for these species. Since 1971 AKVAFORSK, has continuously carried out large scale breeding research projects with salmonid species, and during the latest 15 years also with a number of fresh water and marine species. Results from this work and the results from other institutions around the world have brought forward considerable knowledge, which make the development of efficient breeding programs feasible. The genetic improvement obtained in selection programs for fish and shellfish is remarkable and much higher than what has been achieved in terrestrial farm animals.
