Book A Future for Peacekeeping

Download or read book A Future for Peacekeeping written by Edward Moxon-Browne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study challenges the easy assumption that peacekeeping as we've known it in the past will be the 'pill for every ill' in the future. A 'new world order' means new types of conflict breaking out almost anywhere in a world that is more volatile and less predictable than before. Contributors to this volume argue that we need to get back to basics; that there are sobering lessons to be learnt from Somalia, the Lebanon and Cambodia; that we need to ask some fundamental questions. Can peacekeeping be 'reformed' or must it be totally 'reinvented'? Are soldiers the best peacekeepers and, if not, who should replace them?

Book Turning the Tide on Piracy Building Somalia s Future

Download or read book Turning the Tide on Piracy Building Somalia s Future written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: European Union Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation Atalanta has made clear progress in reducing the number of ships pirated, with only 8 vessels and 215 hostages held in June 2012 compared to 23 vessels and 501 hostages in the same month in 2011. Nonetheless the report makes clear that it is vital this effort is extended beyond 2014 to show the EU will not walk away from confronting piracy in the Indian Ocean. Otherwise organisations and individuals that organise piracy will simply wait out the operation before returning to their previous activities. The report welcomes the increase in trials and imprisonment of pirates and particularly praises the role played by the Seychelles. However, the Committee do express concerns about the policy of transferring sentenced pirates back to Somalia for imprisonment and suggest there is a risk of breakouts. They call on the EU and UN to work together to monitor pirate prisons. They also say efforts should be made to ensure the imprisonment includes some efforts at rehabilitation as well as punishment, particularly for young pirates. Other findings in the report include: Somali piracy will never be completely eradicated until the root causes of the problems in the country are addressed through aid focused on providing alternative livelihoods for the Somali people to reduce the incentives to engage in piracy; the Committee now support the use of armed guards on ships; a welcome degree of international cooperation in tackling Somali piracy with national navies of Russia, China and India all playing a role.

Book excerpt: The Boundary Politics of Independent Africa brings insights not only to Africanists but also to students of international relations and, more specifically, of conflict. The African states that gained independence during the 1950s and 1960s emerged within the boundaries established by their colonial rulers. Both African leaders and outside observers believed then that bitter conflicts would erupt over these borders. This has not happened. There have been numerous conflicts, but only a very few have been major disruptions. The prediction of boundary and territorial conflict, Saadia Touval explains, stemmed from the false assumption, based on the European experience of irredentism and secession, that the tribes and ethnic groups divided by boundaries would seek to unite, to become members of the same state, or to form a state of their own, and therefore would challenge the boundaries dividing them.

Book The Future of African Peace Operations

Download or read book The Future of African Peace Operations written by Cedric De Coning and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing threats ranging from Islamist insurgencies to the Ebola pandemic, African regional actors are playing an increasingly vital role in safeguarding peace and stability across the continent. But while the African Union has demonstrated its ability to deploy forces on short notice and in difficult circumstances, the challenges posed by increasingly complex conflict zones have revealed a widening divide between the theory and practice of peacekeeping. With the AU's African Standby Force becoming fully operational in 2016, this timely and much-needed work argues that responding to these challenges will require a new and distinctively African model of peacekeeping, as well as a radical revision of the current African security framework. The first book to provide a comprehensive overview and analysis of African peace operations, The Future of African Peace Operations gives a long overdue assessment of the ways in which peacekeeping on the continent has evolved over the past decade. It will be a vital resource for policy makers, researchers and all those seeking solutions and insights into the immense security challenges which Africa is facing today.

Book The Green New Deal and the Future of Work

Download or read book The Green New Deal and the Future of Work written by Craig Calhoun and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catastrophic climate change overshadows the present and the future. Wrenching economic transformations have devastated workers and hollowed out communities. However, those fighting for jobs and those fighting for the planet have often been at odds. Does the world face two separate crises, environmental and economic? The promise of the Green New Deal is to tackle the threat of climate change through the empowerment of working people and the strengthening of democracy. In this view, the crisis of nature and the crisis of work must be addressed together—or they will not be addressed at all. This book brings together leading experts to explore the possibilities of the Green New Deal, emphasizing the future of work. Together, they examine transformations that are already underway and put forth bold new proposals that can provide jobs while reducing carbon consumption—building a world that is sustainable both economically and ecologically. Contributors also debate urgent questions: What is the value of a federal jobs program, or even a jobs guarantee? How do we alleviate the miseries and precarity of work? In key economic sectors, including energy, transportation, housing, agriculture, and care work, what kind of work is needed today? How does the New Deal provide guidance in addressing these questions, and how can a Green New Deal revive democracy? Above all, this book shows, the Green New Deal offers hope for a better tomorrow—but only if it accounts for work’s past transformations and shapes its future.

Book The Politics of Dress in Somali Culture

Download or read book The Politics of Dress in Somali Culture written by Heather M. Akou and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The universal act of dressing—shared by both men and women, young and old, rich and poor, minority and majority—has shaped human interactions, communicated hopes and fears about the future, and embodied what it means to be Somali. Heather Marie Akou mines politics and history in this rich and compelling study of Somali material culture. Akou explores the evolution of Somali folk dress, the role of the Somali government in imposing styles of dress, competing forms of Islamic dress, and changes in Somali fashion in the U.S. With the collapse of the Somali state, Somalis continue a connection with their homeland and community through what they wear every day.
