Book Solving the Mystery of Chinese Magic Squares

Download or read book Solving the Mystery of Chinese Magic Squares written by Fung-Yuel Chang and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 4000 year- old mystery of Chinese magic squares is finally solved! Magic squares have fascinated ordinary and serious mathematicians alike for four thousand years. Great Yu discovered the first three by three magic square on the back of a turtle around the year 2200 B.C. before he was crowned the first emperor in China. Some three thousand years later in 1275, Yang Hui amused his countrymen with riddles describing the creations of third and fourth order magic squares. Two hundred forty years later in 1514, Albrecht Durer unknowingly applied Yang Hui's diagonal reversal scheme to produce in the Western world the first magic square. Some eighty years later in 1593, another Chinese mathematician Cheng Darwai produced a sixth-order magic square with a unique magic sum in every row, every column, but only in each of its twin diagonals knowns as the main and secondary diagonals. In this book, for the first time, F.Y. Chang has deciphered Yang Hui's riddles and extends both ancient Chinese mathematician's works and develops algorithms to create magic squares beyond the computation capacity of super computers. He formulates techniques such as parametric matrix formulation, row/column sum equalization, triple orthogonal transformation and diagonal switching for creation of the classical Chinese magic squares. He discovered the super diagonal Chinese magic squares with the magic sum in every generalized diagonal including the two conventional diagonals as well as an even number of four-segment split diagonals. Dr. Chang also introduces the idea of Chinese magic square games, which anyone of any age who is a number enthusiast can solve either by logical reasoning or by solving parametric linear equations.

Book excerpt: This book, Magic Square (based on yin-yang principle), teaches the reader the methodology in solving all the magic square from the order 3 to the order N. Firstly, from the yin-yang pair of symmetry-asymmetry, we category all the magic squares into 3 categories, namely the 2N+1, 4N and 4N+2. The categorization becomes the backbone of how we developed the methodology in solving the magic square. Secondly, the yin-yang pairs of movable-immovable and clockwise-anticlockwise are used to solve magic square in few steps. Each category has its own methodology. The methodology derived from this is of graphical type. Thus, from this graphical type, we can use the cut-paste function, another yin-yang pair, from Excel spreadsheet to solve the magic square, especially for the higher order magic square. Lastly, the book teaches how to obtain the variation for solving the magic square. For instance, for magic square of order 9, you can obtain to more than 1 million solutions.

Excerpt: ...the result, but it is not probable that he derived his square according to the scheme employed here. Our 16X16 square is not exactly the same as the square of Franklin, but it belongs to the same class. Our method gives the key to the construction, and it is understood that the system here represented will allow us to construct many more squares by simply pushing the square beyond its limits into the opposite row which by this move has to be transferred. There is the same relation between Franklin's 16X16 square and our square constructed by alternation with quaternate transposition, that exists between the corresponding 8X8 squares. REFLECTIONS ON MAGIC SQUARES. MATHEMATICS, especially in the field where it touches philosophy, has always been my foible, and so Mr. W. S. Andrews's article on "Magic Squares" tempted me to seek a graphic key to the interrelation among their figures which should reveal at a glance the mystery of their construction. THE ORDER OF FIGURES. In odd magic squares, 3X3, 5X5, 7X7, etc., there is no difficulty whatever, as Mr. Andrews's diagrams show at a glance (Fig. 213). The consecutive figures run up slantingly in the form of a staircase, so as to let the next higher figure pass over into the next higher or lower cell of the next row, and those figures that according to this method would fall outside of the square, revert into it as if the magic square were for the time (at the moment of crossing its boundary) connected with its opposite side into the shape of a cylinder. This cannot be clone at once with both its two opposite vertical and its two opposite horizontal sides, but the process is easily represented in the plane by having the magic square extended on all its sides, and on passing its limits...
