Book Toxicology of Chemical Mixtures

Download or read book Toxicology of Chemical Mixtures written by Raymond S.H. Yang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although toxicologic studies in the laboratory often focus on a single chemical, in the larger world, mixtures of chemicals are routinely encountered. Toxicology of Chemical Mixtures examines the mechanisms of interactions and health effects stemming from chemical mixtures in the environment. Toxicologists, pharmacologists, environmental scientists, and professionals involved in environmental clean-ups will benefit from its content. Emphasis is on low-level, long-term exposure. Some of the issues addressed include Target organ toxicities in response to chemical mixture exposures Risk assessment and experimental approaches Case studies and special pollution problems Special pollution problems

Book EPA Environmental Assessment Sourcebook

Download or read book EPA Environmental Assessment Sourcebook written by J. Russell Boulding and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsors constant publication of the latest soil and groundwater contamination studies. Editor J. Russell Boulding has compiled the most recent and the best of these documents in the EPA Environmental Assessment Sourcebook. This book is required reading for both the novice and the experienced environmental academic or technician. Boulding's selections address the basic concepts of contaminant behavior through the newest sampling techniques. The EPA Environmental Assessment Sourcebook is an essential and convenient tool for anyone on the cutting edge of contamination detection, monitoring, and hopefully, someday, prevention.

Book Bioavailability of Contaminants in Soils and Sediments

Download or read book Bioavailability of Contaminants in Soils and Sediments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-05-03 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioavailability refers to the extent to which humans and ecological receptors are exposed to contaminants in soil or sediment. The concept of bioavailability has recently piqued the interest of the hazardous waste industry as an important consideration in deciding how much waste to clean up. The rationale is that if contaminants in soil and sediment are not bioavailable, then more contaminant mass can be left in place without creating additional risk. A new NRC report notes that the potential for the consideration of bioavailability to influence decision-making is greatest where certain chemical, environmental, and regulatory factors align. The current use of bioavailability in risk assessment and hazardous waste cleanup regulations is demystified, and acceptable tools and models for bioavailability assessment are discussed and ranked according to seven criteria. Finally, the intimate link between bioavailability and bioremediation is explored. The report concludes with suggestions for moving bioavailability forward in the regulatory arena for both soil and sediment cleanup.

Book Influence of Nonlinear Sorption on Groundwater Transport of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds

Download or read book Influence of Nonlinear Sorption on Groundwater Transport of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several popular sorption models, including the single-solute Linear, Freundlich, Langmuir, Langmuir-partition, Polanyi-partition model, and the two-solute competitive sorption model, were incorporated into a one-dimension transport model to investigate the influence of the form of sorption isotherm on the transport model predictions. Three types of numerical experiments were conducted, including: transport experiments, remediation experiments and simulation of Borden experiment. The results showed a significant influence of the form of the sorption isotherm on the groundwater contaminant transport predictions. In transport and remediation simulations, the time-to-breakthrough and time-to remediation for the three single-solute isotherms differed from each other. For the two-solute competitive sorption models, both solutes exhibited an enhanced transport or remediation, especially the less sorbing solute. In Borden experiment simulations, the total mass in domain, the velocity of the center of the plume, and the spreading of the plume were also highly dependent on the sorption isotherms.

Book Modern Hydrology and Sustainable Water Development

Download or read book Modern Hydrology and Sustainable Water Development written by S. K. Gupta and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-06-13 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material of this book will derive its scientific under-pinning from basics of mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, meteorology, engineering, soil science, and related disciplines and will provide sufficient breadth and depth of understanding in each sub-section of hydrology. It will start with basic concepts: Water, its properties, its movement, modelling and quality The distribution of water in space and time Water resource sustainability Chapters on ‘global change’ and ‘water and ethics’ aim respectively to emphasize the central role of hydrological cycle and its quantitative understanding and monitoring for human well being and to familiarize the readers with complex issues of equity and justice in large scale water resource development process. Modern Hydrology for Sustainable Development is intended not only as a textbook for students in earth and environmental science and civil engineering degree courses, but also as a reference for professionals in fields as diverse as environmental planning, civil engineering, municipal and industrial water supply, irrigation and catchment management.
