Download or read book Solomon Islands 2010 Economic Report written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social progress in Solomon Islands has been limited since the country's independence, and the recent global economic crisis has placed more pressure on the country's economy. The resulting fiscal crunch and emerging balance-of-payments pressures demand a coordinated macroeconomic policy response, featuring recurrent expenditure restraint, prudent monetary policy, and public sector reform. Grant-funded infrastructure will also need to play a key role in supporting economic and employment growth. Finally, because the country is a high-cost, risky place in which to do business, the government must focus on removing constraints to private sector growth. This report outlines these recommendations for the medium- to long-term economic growth of Solomon Islands.

This book was released on 2023-03-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report highlights three main pathways for changing the food system based on consultations and analysis. The pathways include strengthening and connecting rural food systems, enhancing the national policy environment, and advocating for healthy food environments that are accessible, affordable, and convenient. These pathways operate on different scales, ranging from provincial to national inward and outward-looking approaches, but they are interconnected and interact in significant ways. To achieve national prosperity, it is important to prioritize rural and urban areas and establish strong connections between them. The report recognizes areas of strength that are already in place and emphasizes the need to strengthen them further to maintain their positive trajectory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘I know no place where firm and paternal government would sooner produce beneficial results then in the Solomons … Here is an object worthy indeed the devotion of one’s life’. Charles Morris Woodford devoted his working life to pursuing this dream, becoming the first British Resident Commissioner in 1897 and remaining in office until 1915, establishing the colonial state almost singlehandedly. His career in the Pacific extended beyond the Solomon Islands. He worked briefly for the Western Pacific High Commission in Fiji, was a temporary consul in Samoa, and travelled as a Government Agent on a small labour vessel returning indentured workers to the Gilbert Islands. As an independent naturalist he made three successful expeditions to the islands, and even climbed Mt Popomanaseu, the highest mountain in Guadalcanal. However, his natural history collection of over 20,000 specimens, held by the British Museum of Natural History, has not been comprehensively examined. The British Solomon Islands Protectorate was established in order to control the Pacific Labour Trade and to counter possible expansion by French and German colonialists. It remaining an impoverished, largely neglected protectorate in the Western Pacific whose economic importance was large-scale copra production, with its copra considered the second-worst in the world. This book is a study of Woodford, the man, and what drove his desire to establish a colonial protectorate in the Solomon Islands. In doing so, it also addresses ongoing issues: not so much why the independent state broke down, but how imperfectly it was put together in the first place.

Download or read book A Clash of Paradigms written by Suan Maiava and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. This study indicates that researchers have far to go in understanding and assessing how development projects work. The author shows that, often, the perception of failure is not shared by those whom were intended to benefit. She uses a case study of Samoan villagers introduced to cattle farming to examine the wider development process and challenge the conventional theories. By drawing on people-centred perspectives that give much greater weight to the role of culture in development, the volume does not simply criticize development project management, but suggests practical and positive ways forward, encouraging spontaneous indigenous development which should be supported by projects where appropriate.
