Download or read book Explorations in Planning Theory written by Luigi Mazza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is this thing called planning? What is its domain? What do planners do? How do they talk? What are the limits and possibilities for planning imposed by power, politics, knowledge, technology, interpretation, ethics, and institutional design? In this comprehensive volume, the foremost voices in planning explore the foundational ideas and issues of the profession.Explorations in Planning Theory is an extended inquiry into the practice of the profession. As such, it is a landmark text that defines the field for today's planners and the next generation. As Seymour J. Mandelbaum notes in the introduction, ""the shared framework of these essays captures a pervasive interest in the behavior, values, character, and experience of professional planners at work.""All of the chapters in this volume are written to address arguments that are important in the community of planning theoreticians and are crafted in the language of that community. While many of the contributors included here differ in their styles, the editors note that students, experienced practitioners, and scholars of city and regional planning will find this work illuminating and helpful in their research.
Download or read book Getting To Know Schools In A Democracy written by Helen Simons and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987. The central concept of the book is that of 'democratic' evaluation, one of the most influential ideas in the development of education practice in this country since professional evaluation emerged in the 1960s. The question explored, through an examination of the theory and practice of democratic evaluation, is whether it is possible to both posit and practice an approach to evaluation that provides an effective curb on the derivatisation and centralisation of information for educational decision-making. The book documents the emergence of politically conscious evaluation in this country and through two detailed cases explores the strengths and weaknesses of democratic theory in practice. Issues concerning the rights, obligations and freedoms of evaluators in the conduct and dissemination of evaluations are discussed.

Download or read book The Building Schools for the Future Programme written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (BSF) programme believe that it is leading to more strategic procurement of school infrastructure than previous school building programmes. Local Authorities are using BSF to rearrange the location, type and number of schools in their area and create facilities and school environments which support their educational objectives. BSF schools are built to higher specifications and space standards than previous schools. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and Partnerships for Schools (the body established by DCSF to manage the BSF programme centrally) were too optimistic in their assumptions of how quickly the first schools could be delivered. By December 2008, only 42 of the planned 200 schools had been built, with 54 due to open next year and 121 the year after. To include all schools in the programme, 250 schools will need to be built a year and the number of schools in procurement and construction at any one time will need to double from 2011 onwards. The extent to which problems in the finance markets will affect BSF is still unclear. DCSF and Partnerships for Schools estimate that the total cost of renewing the school estate will be between £52 billion to £55 billion which is £7 billion to £10 billion more than was estimated at the outset of the programme.

Judy Sebba, Professor of Education, University of Sussex "Teachers will find this book invaluable. It is based on quality researchwhich actually evaluates the impact of the various strategies suggestedfor raising boys' achievement. What is more, in contrast to many of themore 'quick-fix' works in this field, the authors’ discussion and analysisis measured and nuanced, and supported by an in-depth understandingof the wealth of theory and research around gender and achievement. It provides a welcome and weighty contribution to an evercontroversial debate." Becky Francis, London Metropolitan University In this important book, the authors evaluate different approaches and advocate practical, evidence-based strategies, which have the potential to promote boys’ as well as girls’ achievements. The approaches are discussed within the context of inclusivity, acknowledging the diverse needs and interests of different boys and the invisibility and continuing disadvantage of some girls. The book begins and ends with reflections from students of their own school experiences, and makes practical recommendations for the future. This book draws upon empirical research and work initiated as part of the DfES project on Raising Boys’ Achievement. It brings together theoretical and practical issues, and reflects upon the construction of the debate about boys’ apparent under-achievement from the perspectives of girls as well as boys. The authors critically explore notions of under-achievement and ‘value added’, and consider how useful the concept of the ‘gender gap’ is in advancing the debates. Raising Boys’ Achievement in Secondary Schools is key reading for undergraduate and postgraduate Education students, PGCE students, headteachers, senior managers within schools and local education authorities, and policy makers.

Download or read book Judicial Review Handbook written by The Hon Sir Michael Fordham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-05 with total page 1367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Lord Woolf, the former Lord Chief Justice. The Judicial Review Handbook is one of the leading works in public law, an indispensable source of reference and a guide to the burgeoning case law in judicial review. Established as an essential part of the library of any practitioner engaged in public law cases, the Judicial Review Handbook offers unrivalled coverage of administrative law, including, but not confined to the work of the Administrative Court and its procedures. But as anyone who has used the previous editions will acknowledge, it is much more than that. The completely revised and up-dated fifth edition is once again structured around 63 unique legal principles supported by a compendious compilation of sources and an unequalled selection of reported case quotations. It also includes essential procedural rules, forms and guidance issued by the Administrative Court. This edition builds on previous editions with deepened coverage of the impact on judicial review of both the Civil Procedure Rules and the Human Rights Act 1998 which, at the time of the previous edition, were both new arrivals in English law. Their impact, and the plethora of cases which explore their meaning and application, are fully analysed and evaluated by Michael Fordham, and quotations from the cases incorporated into the unique appendices of case extracts. The author, a leading member of the English public law bar, has been involved in many of the leading judicial review cases in recent years and is the founding editor of the Judicial Review journal. "It is our first port of call when we have an administrative law problem". (Lord Woolf, from the Foreword to the Third Edition) See the companion website for this book (including case synopses) at: www.judicialreviewhandbook.com.

Each chapter has been written by an acknowledged expert in the field with extensive practical experience, and where appropriate is supported by comprehensive case studies and worked examples. What this book emphatically will not do, is turn anyone into an expert in the specialist and even arcane worlds of the plant and machinery valuer or the valuation of milk quotas. What it will do, however, is give some indication of the problems and pitfalls associated with these fields.
