Download or read book Solidification Analysis of Metal Matrix Composites Aluminium 11 8 Silicon Alloy Reinforced with Titanium Carbide Particulates written by Nanang Fatchurrohman and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite is a material system composed of a mixture or combination of two or more constituents that differ in form and chemical composition and which are essentially insoluble in each other. Metal matrix composites (MMC) are engineered materials composed of an elemental or alloy as a matrix in which an insoluble second phase reinforcer is embedded and distributed to achieve property improvement. Application of MMC comprises a broad range in aircraft, automotive, defence technology and astronautics components. The performance during its work life of MMC is determined by the mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of MMC are linked to microconstituents formed and its characteristics. For MMC processed by casting method, the solidification behaviour will determine the type of microconstituents formed and its properties. In this study, casting via vortex mixing method is employed to produce MMC aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy (LM6) reinforced with different volume percentages (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25%) of titanium particulates (TiCp) cast using sand and copper moulds. Temperature measurements during cooling and solidification are used as the main source to analyse solidification properties (fraction solid and latent heat generation) using Fourier thermal analysis method. A metallographic study is performed to observe the particulates distribution and microconstituents present. A hardness test is carried out, the results show that 25% volume addition of TiCp cast using copper mould has the best result. This result correspond to the improved microstructure as particulates are well distributed in the matrix which can be seen on the photomicrographs. From the visual observation of photomicrographs, the increment addition of particulates will promote more nucleation sites and grain size is reduced due to faster solidification of casting using copper mould (high heat extraction capacity). For production using sand mould the maximum mean value of hardness 54.38 Rockwell number is reached by addition of 25% volume content TiCp , solidification time (fraction solid equals to 1) at 195 seconds and volumetric latent heat generated 245.63 103kJ/m3. The best result is obtained by fabrication of LM6-TiCp MMC using copper mould (permanent die), the maximum mean value of hardness 76.82 Rockwell number is reached by addition of 25% TiCp volume content, solidification time (fraction equals to 1) at 5 seconds (fastest) and volumetric latent heat generated 100.77 kJ/m3. From the results, it is concluded that casting of LM6-TiCp MMC is successfully achieved using vortex mixing technique and that addition of particulates influence solidification characteristics which in turn affect the properties of the MMC.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A composite material is a materials system composed of a mixture or combination of two or more micro or macro constituents that differ in form anf chemical composition and which are essentially insoluble in each other. Metal matrix composites are engineered materials composed of an elemental or alloy matrix in which an insoluble second phase reinforcer is embedded and distibuted to achieve some property improvement. Particulate reinforced metal matrix composites constitute a major portion of these advanced materials. Aluminium-silicon alloys, as a matrix material, are characterized by lightweight, good strength-to-weight ratio, ease of fabrication at reasonale cost, high strength at elevated temperature, good thermal conductivity, excellent castability, good weldability, excellent corrosion resistance and wear resistance properties. Application of particulate reinforced composites in the aerospace, automotive, transportation and construction industries depends on the choice of cost affordable factor. In this research work, particulate reinforced metal matrix composites are processed by vortex method, a melt stirring liquid metallurgy technique. Four different particulates namely, graphite, combination of tungsten carbide and aluminium silicate for hybrid composite reinforcement, quartz and titanium carbide are used as second phase reinforcers for reinforcement in the matrix. Aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy is selected as the matrix material and the particulators are mixed in different weight fraction %. Slab composite castings are made by pouring the composite mixture in grey cast, steel and copper permanent-molds. Process parameters like pouring temperature, particulate preheating temperature, impeller blade speed and shape are optimized and composite castings containing different weigth fraction % of particulate are made by permanent-mold casting process. Effects on different weight fraction % addition of particulate on the particulate distribution in aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy composites are studied. The processed particulate reinforced composites are subjected to mechanical tensile testing and the properties are determined for different type of particulate reinforcements in the aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy matrix. Besides, hardness, density, impact strength-charphy, fracture toughness, electrical resistivity, electrical conductivity, thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient measurements are performed by using the appropriate equipments and machines. Metallographic studies of the processed particulate composites are conducted by optical microscopy and photomicrographs are captured at different magnifications to reveal and examine the particulate distribution in the aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy matrix. SEM observation of the fracture surfaces of tensile tested, charpy impact tested specimens are performed to study the fracture mechanics and surface characteristics with the aid of captured SEM fractographs. Interfacial boding features of the processed composites are also analyzed with the help of SEM. Besides, slab castings without particulated addition are made and compared with results based on the properties and microstructural features, particularly for the uniformity of particulate distribution in the aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy base matrix. It is found that the properties of the processed particulate reinforced aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy matrix composites are superior to the cast monolithic aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy based on the above-mentioned properties studies. Photomicrographs of the processed composites based on the metallographic studies have confirmed the uniformity of particulate distribution in the aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy matrix.

Download or read book Simulation and Characterization of Aluminium based Metal Matrix Composite written by Suraya Sulaiman and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work is concerned with the areas of computer simulation of casting process to investigate the mould filling and solidification characteristics of aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy matrix (LM6 alloy matrix) reinforced at five different weight percentages; 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of titanium carbide (TiC) as particulates. The experimental worksfocused on the cooling curve, microstructural and mechanical properties of composite material. Effects on different weight percentages (wt%) addition of the TiC particulates distribution in LM6 alloy matrix are studied. The simulation software used is AnyCasting. The temperature and time during solidification process for experimental work and simulation are compared. The cylinder composite castinghas been made by pouring the composite mixture in sand and copper permanent metallic moulds. The tensile specimens were then preparedin accordance to ASTM B557 M-94 specifications, hardness specimens were tested using MITUTOYO ATK-600 MODEL machine and microstructure of the fracture surface have done by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).The outcome of the investigations reveals that the tensile strength and hardness are enhanced from 0wt% to 10wt% of TiCand start to decrease after addition of 10wt%.ofTiC.Good bonding and wettability between the composites ranging from 0%wt. to 10%wt. of TiC influence the close distribution of TiC particles in the LM6 alloy matrix. The addition of 10%wt. to 20%wt. of TiC in LM6 alloy matrix cause the lower resistance and load-bearing capacity and the particle are no longer isolated with the LM6 alloy matrix causing the worse value of tensile strength and hardness.

Book Mechanical Properties of Spray Atomized SiC Particle Reinforced Aluminum Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Mechanical Properties of Spray Atomized SiC Particle Reinforced Aluminum Titanium Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present study, the elevated temperature mechanical behavior and microstructure of Al-Ti-Silicon carbide particulates SiCp metal matrix composites (MMCs) processed by spray atomization and co deposition were investigated. The elevated temperature mechanical properties of the spray deposited and hot extruded materials were studied following a 100 hour exposure at 250, 350, 450 C; the mechanical properties at room temperature were also determined. The results of the present study show that the elevated temperature yield strength of the spray deposited and extruded materials compared favorably to those of an equivalent alloy made by powder metallurgical materials, were superior to those of the ingot material, but were inferior to those of mechanically alloyed Al-Ti materials. The evolution of the microstructure as a result of the thermal annealing was investigated using X-ray diffraction, TEM, and optical microscopy. The results from X-ray diffractometry studies showed extensive precipitation of the equilibrium Al3Ti phase during thermal exposure. In addition, no interfacial reactions were observed.
