Download or read book Uniforms of the German Soldier written by A. M. De Quesada and published by Greenhill Books/Lionel Leventhal. This book was released on 2006 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through periods of glory, defeat and renaissance, the German Army uniform has evolved. Prussianistic and Germanic traditions have remained strong throughout the uniform's history, and can still be found in the insignia and equipment of the present-day soldier. In 1870 the uniforms worn by Imperial German soldiers varied between the different principalities. The spiked helmet (pickelhaube) was first adopted by Prussia in 1842, but it was later used throughout Germany. The pickelhaube was made out of leather, with metal reinforcement and a metal spike. It went through a number of modifications, such as the introduction of a round visor and the replacement of the rear spine. Within the colonies, there was even greater variation in uniform and equipment. In German East Africa, the soldiers wore white service uniforms with white tropical helmets and the national cockade of black, white and red. The East Asia Brigade wore a field gray jacket with four front pockets lined with leather, designed for carrying cartridges. Uniforms of the German Soldier has more than thirty color photographs and more than 300 black-and-white photographs, giving the reader an unparalleled analysis. Each photograph is accompanied with a detailed caption, explaining interesting aspects of the soldier's uniform, insignia and equipment.

Download or read book Soldiers Stories of the War Illustrations written by Walter Wood and published by CHAPMAN AND HALL. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the stories in this volume are told by men who were seen personally, and who, with one or two exceptions—cases of soldiers who had returned to the front—read the typescripts of their narratives, so that accuracy should be secured. The narrators spoke while the impressions of fighting and hardships and things seen were still strong and clear; in several cases full notes had been made or diaries kept, and reference to these records was of great value in preparing the stories. When seeing an informant I specially asked that a true tale should be told, and I believe that no unreliable details were knowingly given. I have been fortunate in getting a good deal of exclusive matter—the full record of the noble achievement of L Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, for example, has not been given anywhere in such detail as is presented here, and the same remark applies to the story of the three torpedoed cruisers. During the earlier periods of the war British soldiers told me tales of barbarities and outrages committed by German troops which were so terrible that it was impossible to believe them, and I omitted many of these details from the finished stories; but I know now, from reading the Report of the Committee on Alleged German Outrages, presided over by Viscount Bryce, formerly British Ambassador at Washington, that even the most dreadful of the statements did not do more than touch the fringe of the appalling truth. Though much has been already published in the form of tales and letters from our soldiers at the front, yet I hope that this collection of stories will be accepted as a contribution from the British fighting man to the general history of the earlier stages of the war—those memorable preliminary operations which have made a deep and indelible impression on the British race throughout the world.

Download or read book AUSTRALIA AT WAR 20 Illustrations about soldiers lives at the Somme and Ypres written by Will Dyson and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein are 20 illustrations made during the winters at Ypres and on the Somme by Will Dyson, even though he was wounded in their making. Dyson (1880 – 1938) the official illustrator for the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). They reflect the misery and the depression of the material conditions of these campaigns than it does any of the soldiers exaltations or the typical cheerfulness which accompanied the Anzacs. It is always difficult for a creative person, like an artist, to remain positive when faced with the horrors of war, but especially the horrors that WWI, the first modern war, brought. However, it is the soul rather than the body that he has drawn here, drawn out in long fantastic lines. In any case the lightest, wildest or even crudest sketch scratched down by Dyson has always had more of the true grip of gravity than the whole of the Royal Academy. Indeed there is something significant in all that white light and sharp shadow which belongs to such dramatic scenes, and is so favourable to the art of black and white. There is even something of allegory in that awful and empty daylight in which armies live, so often without a stick of roof or a rag of curtain. All the soldiers in a great war are historical characters; but these are rather specially standing, not against court or camp, but only against the sky. They are under a light which will indeed prove eternal; even as compared with other historic groups their contribution has been written into the annals of history and will continue to be known forevermore. 10% of the net sale will be donated to charities by the publisher. ============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Australia at War, Will Dyson, World War One, World War 1, World War I, WWI, WW1, official, illustrations, Australian Imperial Force, AIF, twenty, 20, Australian, ANZAC, New Zealand, Kiwi, Okker, Aussie, Bringing Up The Stew, Report, Battery, Dead Beat, The Cook, Group, Looking For, Battalion, Mate, Tunnellers, Under, German Territory, Coming Out, The Somme, Ypres, Battle of, Labour Battalion Man, Back, Waggon Lines, Polygon Wood, Delville Wood, Lightly Wounded, Menin Road, Dressing Station, Stretcher-Bearers, Martinpuich, Peronne, Waiting For The Stew, food, hot, In The Tunnel, Hill 60, Fatalist, Outside, Pill Box, Hanging About, Down, The Ridge, France, Flanders, fields, Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France

Download or read book A Soldier s Manuscript Illustrated Edition written by Cornelius Winant and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes The Americans in the First World War Illustration Pack - 57 photos/illustrations and 10 maps “THE narrative of adventure, travel, combat, and escape, which composes this volume, is the straight-forward work of a straight-thinking young American. Cornelius Winant gives a clear assessment of the great movements in which he had so chivalrously borne a part. Perhaps he had no thought of the manuscript ever going beyond his family, which now, in response to the natural wishes of many friends, privately distributes the account in printed form. “Four boys with their mother and father composed the Winant family. The house on 71st Street must have re-echoed to the gay laughter and happy comradeship of these four devoted brothers. “That was in 1900, when our soldier-narrator was but a little child; it was long ago, before the boy had left the endeared home for boarding school, before they had graduated from Princeton, before the catastrophe, in which each bore a distinguished part, shook the world. “The reader will quickly become involved in a narrative which takes him, with Cornelius Winant, after his prompt will-to-enlist, through the early ambulance days, through a winter at Monastir, to the western front in the French Army, and twice into the harrowing experiences of German prison camps. “The quality of the account is an utter fairness, as utter an uncomplaining courage, marked throughout by a boyish, naïve, selfless delight in the game. Of his terrible journey to the Dutch frontier he writes: “I remember thinking, as I was going along this road, that in spite of the hardships it was darn good fun, and I appreciated it at the time.”-Foreword
