The interviews are in their own words; they provide frank commentary to a range of topics including pre-deployment training, logistics support, poppy eradication (and some of the corruption they encountered associated with that task) and integration of Special Forces with conventional infantry on operations. As the US Army continues its advisory mission in Afghanistan and in other countries around the globe, the relevancy of US Army Advisors in Afghanistan grows and should be on the reading list for Soldiers tasked with this mission. Everybody has a story to tell. In 2005, the US Army Training and Doctrine Command gave the Combat Studies Institute (CSI) the mission to capture some of those stories by conducting oral interviews with Soldiers who have participated in operations during the Long War. In this volume of the Eyewitness to War series, the narratives of US Army Advisors in Afghanistan are unvarnished, first-person accounts of Coalition personnel deployed in support of OEF. Those accounts, because of the immediacy of their production, some of them just months after their return from their missions, will be of incalculable value and service to historians, researchers, media and future generations of Soldiers and civilians to come. The accounts have been only lightly edited for clarity to remove the occasional use of excessive profanity and the rare injurious personal attack. I come to this task through a string of accidents that has kept me involved with war in Afghanistan as a Soldier and an academic for over 30 years. It began in graduate school at Columbia University in New York City, where I was privileged to study with some of the Nation's greatest experts on the Soviet Union and Central Europe, and with another superb crew of scholars on war and peace issues. These interests came together with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. From 1980 to 1984, I worked on my dissertation on the Soviet invasion under the guidance of two consummate professionals: Professors Marshall Shulman, the former Advisor to Secretary of State Cyrus Vance on Soviet affairs; and Zalmay Khalilzad, a young academic strategist who later became a colleague in the Pentagon and still later Ambassador to Afghanistan, his boyhood home, and then to Iraq. This book develops the lineage from Armies of the ancient world to today's modern Armies in a rather concise and insightful manner. Sir John Hackett focuses a lot on the relationship between the military forces and the countries they represent on the battlefield. He also offers some interesting opinions about training future leaders in the Armed Services based on his vast military experience and career. I thoroughly enjoyed this book (it has many interesting photos and prints throughout the text), although it is written from a European (the author is British) perspective. The author does devote some time to the US Army, but his main focus is the European military system. Therefore, if you are looking for a book about how the American Army has changed over time, I do not recommend this one. On the other hand, I do recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about how the profession of arms has developed over time. It would make a fine addition to your military history library if you have one, or serve as a great first addition, if you are thinking of starting one. -- website.
