Download or read book The Space Environment written by Alan C. Tribble and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breakup of the Space Shuttle Columbia as it reentered Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003, reminded the public--and NASA--of the grave risks posed to spacecraft by everything from insulating foam to space debris. Here, Alan Tribble presents a singular, up-to-date account of a wide range of less conspicuous but no less consequential environmental effects that can damage or cause poor performance of orbiting spacecraft. Conveying a wealth of insight into the nature of the space environment and how spacecraft interact with it, he covers design modifications aimed at eliminating or reducing such environmental effects as solar absorptance increases caused by self-contamination, materials erosion by atomic oxygen, electrical discharges due to spacecraft charging, degradation of electrical circuits by radiation, and bombardment by micrometeorites. This book is unique in that it bridges the gap between studies of the space environment as performed by space physicists and spacecraft design engineering as practiced by aerospace engineers.

Book Solar Flare Prediction

Download or read book Solar Flare Prediction written by C. Sawyer and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study looked at observational and theoretical studies of flare physics, at quests for flare precursors, and at mathematical models for combining masses of predictive information. We also looked at the worldwide effort to gather and share timely data and combine it with knowledge and experience to forecast solar flares and their effects. Topics include: Long-lived, large-scale magnetic and velocity fields; Magnetic-energy buildup in an active region; Flare initiation; Flare precursors -- Filament activation, Preflare brightening, Magnetic shear, and Emerging and cancelling magnetic flux; Quantitative prediction; Operational solar flare prediction; Forecast evaluation.

Book Using Solar Radio Burst Integrated Fluxes to Predict Energetic Proton Flux Increases

Download or read book Using Solar Radio Burst Integrated Fluxes to Predict Energetic Proton Flux Increases written by William R. Barron and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-integrated solar ratio fluxes and their association with satellite observed solar energetic proton flux increases have been studied. The time-integration was only of the U-portion of the radio burst flux increase. The best correlations between the integrated radio fluxes and the proton peak fluxes were realized when the radio fluxes were multiplied by the factor exp (-3B), where B is the angular distance, in radians, between the site of the flare and the solar footpoint of the magnetic field connection between the sun and the earth. The solar footpoint positions were determined from the solar wind speed. Two-variate linear regressions were computed using the time-integrated radio fluxes at five discrete radio frequencies in the 606 to 8800 MHz frequency interval and peak proton fluxes at > 10 MeV and > 30 MeV. The higher frequencies of 2695, 4995 and 8800 MHz all correlated better with the > 10 -MeV protons than the lower frequencies. The > 30-MeV protons were even better correlated with the higher frequencies, but correlation with the lower frequencies were poorer. The Total Energy Density, E sub T, of the radio burst, an integration across the frequency interval of the time-integrated radio fluxes at each frequency, was found to be better correlated with the proton fluxes than any of the individual frequencies.

Book Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere

Download or read book Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere written by C.S. Deehr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an ordered collection of tutorial lectures on the physical processes in the polar upper atmosphere given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "The Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere" held at Lillehammer, Norway, May 5-16, 1980. The polar cap is an important part of the high latitude atmosphere not only because of circulation and horizontal trans port in the neutral atmosphere and convection in the ionosphere, but also because of its unique energy sources and sinks. In addition, solar wind plasma is led into-the upper atmosphere by the geomagnetic field at the poles, and the polar cap is, as stated by Tutorial Leader Roederer in this volume, "the place where outer space meets earth". The atmosphere at lower latitudes is well-known to the ground-based observer, and the advent of satellite observations was simply the beginning of a new perspective. The exploration of the atmosphere at polar latitudes, however, proceeded in quite the opposite manner, and satellite maps of the polar caps may be compared with a relatively meagre set of ground-based data. Recent efforts to extend the polar observations from the ground have resulted in the need for a review of the physical principles and processes occurring in the polar upper atmosphere. The interdisciplinary nature of these efforts led to the emphasis here on a tutorial program.
