Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flare data were compiled primarily from the flare lists of the IAU Quarterly Bulletin and a magnetic tape obtained from the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences and Aeronomy (ITSA). This tape was assembled from the CRPL-F Part B series (1955 through 1964) and included sub-flare reports. Altogether, 84,600 reports were compiled. In preparing the revised tape, tests were made for errors that were introduced at various stages in the handling of the data. Some errors were detected by comparing the entries for flare time, position, and importance of the flare reports found in both the CRPL and IAU flare lists. Only slightly more than one-third of all reports were so compared, but these included practically all flares of importance> or = 1 during the period 1955 through 1962. Errors in reported flare areas were detected by matching reports between the two flare lists and by testing the areas as a function of central distance. This check uncovered flare reports in which the measured and corrected areas were reversed. Other errors were detected by checking for consistency of the information within each flare report. These various tests disclosed a 12.5 percent error in the flare reports of the CRPL-F Part B series, and an 11.2 percent error in the Quarterly Bulletin flare list. After correction of all identified errors, the revised magnetic tape listing may still contain a 5 percent error. Most of these discrepancies are in the sub-flare reports.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a summary of the ten years (1955-1964) of observations of solar flares reported by 61 observatories. The flare reports have been published predominantly in the IAU Bulletin and CRPL-F Series Part B. This report summarizes the types of information contained in the flare reports, and the frequency of some parts of these reports as functions of many parameters. The results reflect the need for closer cooperation and coordination of participating observatories in recording and reporting solar flare data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nordic literature a remarkable discussion of the northern light appears in Kongespeilet (The King's Mirror) a thirteenth-century Norwegian chronicle. It is described in vivid detail as the following translated excerpts demonstrate: These northern lights have this peculiar nature, that the darker the night is, the brighter they seem, and they always appear at night but never by day, most frequently in the densest darkness and rarely by moonlight. In appearance they resemble a vast flame of fire viewed from a great distance. It also looks as if sharp points were shot from this flame up into the sky; these are of uneven height and in constant motion, now one, now another darting highest; and the light appears to blaze like a living flame. Three different theories for the origin of the northern light were suggested in this book. Numerous naturally occurring heavenly phenomena have been observed and enjoyed as long as the Earth has been inhabited, but hardly any of them has stirred man's imagination, curiosity and fear as much as the northern light. The northern light is certainly one of the most spectacular of nature's phenomena.

Download or read book Solar Flare Occurrence as a Function of Sunspot Size written by Isadore Enger and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An objective technique has been developed for assessing the probability of occurrence of solar flares in a particular sunspot group, given only the sizes of the sunspot group on two consecutive days. The sunspot data cover the 10-year period 1955 to 1964 and have been published in the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results. The flare data were measured at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico. The flare and spot data were combined by a simple, objective technique which depends only on the size of the spot group and the relative positions of the spot group and flare. These results show the very marked dependence of flare occurrence on the size of the spot group and a significant, but very much smaller, dependence on the change in group size from one day to the next. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COSPAR Colloquium on Solar-Terrestrial Magnetic Activity and Space Environment (STMASE) was held in the National Astronomy Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) in Beijing, China in September 10-12, 2001. The meeting was focused on five areas of the solar-terrestrial magnetic activity and space environment studies, including study on solar surface magnetism; solar magnetic activity, dynamical response of the heliosphere; space weather prediction; and space environment exploration and monitoring. A hot topic of space research, CMEs, which are widely believed to be the most important phenomenon of the space environment, is discussed in many papers. Other papers show results of observational and theoretical studies toward better understanding of the complicated image of the magnetic coupling between the Sun and the Earth, although little is still known little its physical background. Space weather prediction, which is very important for a modern society expanding into out-space, is another hot topic of space research. However, a long way is still to go to predict exactly when and where a disaster will happen in the space. In that sense, there is much to do for space environment exploration and monitoring. The manuscripts submitted to this Monograph are divided into the following parts: (1) solar surface magnetism, (2) solar magnetic activity, (3) dynamical response of the heliosphere, (4) space environment exploration and monitoring; and (5) space weather prediction. Papers presented in this meeting but not submitted to this Monograph are listed by title as unpublished papers at the end of this book.
