Book Vacuum and Ultraviolet radiation Effects on Binders and Pigments for Spacecraft Thermal control Coatings

Download or read book Vacuum and Ultraviolet radiation Effects on Binders and Pigments for Spacecraft Thermal control Coatings written by Donald J. Progar and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an evaluation of several silicone resin binders and powdered inorganic pigments for potential use in spacecraft thermal-control paint formulations. The pigments were selected on the basis of a hypothesis relating the heat of formation of a compound to the compound's resistance to ultraviolet-radiation-induced degradation. Reflectance measurements were made in situ to determine degradatiorna tes due to ultraviolet radiation. The tested polydimethylsiloxane resins were not significantly affected by long exposures to ultraviolet radiation. All the pigments, which were dispersed in a polydimethylsiloxane resin, were degraded by ultraviolet radiation as determined by an increase of solar absorptance. For the materials evaluated in this study, no evidence was found to indicate that pigments with high heats of formation were resistant to ultraviolet degradation.

Book Testing and Optimization of Electrically Conductive Spacecraft Coatings

Download or read book Testing and Optimization of Electrically Conductive Spacecraft Coatings written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report discussing the work done for the Space Environments and Effects (SEE) Program. It discusses test chamber design, coating research, and test results on electrically thermal control coatings. These thermal control coatings are being developed to have several orders of magnitude higher electrical conductivity than most available thermal control coatings. Most current coatings tend to have a range in surface resistivity from 1,011 to 1,013 ohms/sq. Historically, spacecraft have had thermal control surfaces composed of dielectric materials of either polymers (paints and metalized films) or glasses (ceramic paints and optical solar reflectors). Very seldom has the thermal control surface of a spacecraft been a metal where the surface would be intrinsically electrically conductive. The poor thermal optical properties of most metals have, in most cases, stopped them from being used as a thermal control surface. Metals low infrared emittance (generally considered poor for thermal control surfaces) and/or solar absorptance, have resulted in the use of various dielectric coatings or films being applied over the substrate materials in order to obtain the required optical properties.Mell, R. Book Handbook Of Solar Thermal Technologies Concentrating Solar Power And Fuels In 3 Volumes

Download or read book Handbook Of Solar Thermal Technologies Concentrating Solar Power And Fuels In 3 Volumes written by and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-08-11 with total page 1257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three-volume handbook showcases the state of the art in the use of concentrated sunlight to produce electricity, industrial process heat, renewable fuels, including hydrogen and low-carbon synthesis gas, and valuable chemical commodities. The handbook illustrates the value and diversity of applications for concentrating solar power to contribute to the expanding decarbonization of multiple cross-cutting energy sectors.Volume 1: Concentrating Solar Thermal Power, provides an overview of key technologies, principles, and challenges of concentrating solar power (CSP) as well as the use of concentrating solar thermal for process heating and district markets. The ten chapters of this volume provide the reader with the technical background on the solar resource for concentrating solar thermal, the principles and design of concentrating optics, and descriptions of state-of-the-art and emerging solar collector and receiver technologies, thermal storage and thermal-to-electric conversion and power cycles for CSP. It also contains a comprehensive summary of operations and maintenance requirements for CSP plants, and commercial CSP plants and markets around the world.Volume 2, Solar Thermochemical Processes and Products, covers the use of concentrated solar radiation as the heat source to drive endothermic chemical reactions to produce renewable fuels and valuable chemical commodities, equivalently storing solar energy in chemical bonds. The thermodynamic underpinnings of a number of approaches to produce fuel and results of demonstrations of solar thermochemical reactors for these processes at prototype scale are presented. Processes presented include thermochemical metal oxide reduction/oxidation cycles to split water and carbon dioxide solar chemical looping reformation of methane to produce synthesis gas, high temperature electrochemistry, and gasification of biomass. Research on the thermochemical storage for CSP and high temperature production of cement and ammonia to illustrate the use concentrated solar energy to produce valuable chemical products are also included.Volume 3 contains reprinted archival papers to support and supplement the material in Volumes 1 and 2. These papers provide background information on the economics and alternative use cases of CSP not covered in Volume 1, and expand on the material related to the chapter topics presented in Volume 2. Potential commercialization, such as prototype and demonstration projects, are highlighted. The papers are intended as a starting point for a more in-depth study of the topics.

Book Thermal Control Coatings an Analytical Treatment

Download or read book Thermal Control Coatings an Analytical Treatment written by Max A. Turner and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for various types of thermal control coatings has been derived and summarized from an analysis of selected thermal problems frequently encountered in spacecraft hardware coupled with an analysis of variance in the parameters of the thermal balance. This overall analysis indicates the need for a complete series of stable coatings each having a minimum (0.1 or lower) solar absorptance but with different or controllable values of infrared emittance ranging from 0.3 to 1.0 in order to cover the entire range of desirable solar absorptance/emittance ratios from 0.1 to 0.3. This analysis was applied only to a generalized earth orbiting spacecraft. Where internal heat dissipation rates exceeded several watts/sq. ft., active heat removal systems would be required. Book Optical Properties of Thermal Control Coatings After Weathering Simulated Ascent Heating and Simulated Space Radiation Exposure

Download or read book Optical Properties of Thermal Control Coatings After Weathering Simulated Ascent Heating and Simulated Space Radiation Exposure written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-19 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spacecraft radiators reject heat to their surroundings and coatings play an important role in this heat rejection. The coatings provide the combined optical properties of low solar absorptance and high infrared emittance. The coatings are applied to the radiator panel in a number of ways, including conventional spraying, plasma spraying, or as an applique. Not designed for a terrestrial weathering environment, the durability of spacecraft paints, coatings, and appliques upon exposure to weathering and subsequent exposure to ascent heating, solar wind, and ultraviolet radiation was studied. In addition to traditional aluminum panels, new isocyanate ester composite panels were exposed for a total of 90 days at the Atmospheric Exposure Site of Kennedy Space Center's (KSC) Beach Corrosion Facility for the purpose of identifying their durability to weathering. Selected panel coupons were subsequently exposed to simulated ascent heating, solar wind, and vacuum ultraviolet (UV) radiation to identify the effect of a simulated space environment on as-weathered surfaces. Optical properties and adhesion testing were used to document the durability of the paints, coatings, and appliques.
