Book excerpt: *All book proceeds will be donated to Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem, Israel. Shlomo Schὄnberg was just a boy when his entire world as he knew it was blown apart by the Holocaust. Separated from his entire family at the vulnerable age of 13 years old, never to see them again, Shlomo was imprisoned and barely survived conditions that murdered millions, many deaths of which he witnessed. And yet, he somehow held onto his life, his sanity, his dignity, his pride, and his ambition. This is the story of a boy who survived -- but more importantly, this is a story of a man who thrived.

Download or read book Sol White s History of Colored Base Ball with Other Documents on the Early Black Game 1886 1936 written by Sol White and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-08-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America and baseball are rediscovering the game played by African Americans before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. We now know a great deal about the Negro Leagues of 1920 on, and their great stars-Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and their contemporaries. But what of the pre-1920 black game? From the onset in the 1880s of the "gentleman's agreement" that barred blacks from playing in white leagues, that game is nearly invisible. Financially shaky, with sporadic media coverage even in black newspapers and completely overlooked by the mainstream, Negro teams of this era played on for love of the game and in hopes that their skills would receive their due. In 1907, Sol White, a remarkable African-American ballplayer, successful manager, and baseball loyalist, wrote a small volume on the history of the black game. Part fund-raising effort, advertising brochure, team hype, celebration of black baseball, and throughout an implicit and explicit challenge to racism, Sol White's History of Colored Base Ball is the source of much of what we know of the events in the organized black game of that time. The original was poorly printed, and copies are exceedingly rare (known and rumored copies number only four). This edition republishes the full 1907 edition (with the even rarer supplement), completely reset for legibility, and reproduces all the original's illustrations, including the advertisements that speak volumes on the social world of the day. Fifteen additional documents from 1886 to 1936 augment the picture of the black game and our record of Sol White himself. The work is introduced by Jerry Malloy, a recognized expert on the history of Negro leagues who has spent years inpainstaking research into this vanished world.

Download or read book Crucible of Science written by John H. Exton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Crucible of Science" is the story of a unique laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis, and of Carl and Gerty Cori, the biochemists who established it. Carl and Gerty met and married at medical school in Prague in the 1920s. After graduation, they immigrated to the U.S. to escape deteriorating conditions in Europe. Carl soon received an offer from Washington University to become Pharmacology Chair, and the couple settled in St. Louis. Not only did both Coris go on to win the Nobel Prize, the laboratory they established at the University has since produced some of the most outstanding scientists the U.S. has ever seen. Six laboratory scientists also won Nobel Prizes; few, if any, laboratories can claim such an impressive record. The Coris themselves were instrumental in establishing the then new science of Biochemistry in the U.S. They applied chemical approaches to elucidating the transformations of compounds such as glucose in animal tissues and defined the enzyme catalysts that carried out those transformations. Both scientists were extremely rigorous in designing their experiments and interpreting the results, a habit that ensured their findings were above question. This book examines the careers of both Coris and the other eminent scientists who trained in their laboratory. It notes the Coris' acceptance of women, Jews, and scientists from all over the world, unique during this time period. It analyzes those reasons why the laboratory was so successful in attracting the best trainees and producing premier scientists. Intended for scientists, science historians, and anyone interested in the history of science, "Crucible of Science" is a unique presentation of remarkable careers and personalities, examined within the context of the Coris' laboratory.
