Book Sol Gel Processing and Applications

Download or read book Sol Gel Processing and Applications written by Yosry Attia and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During my professional career, I developed a strong interest in sol-gel technology, and worked on both xerogel and aerogel systems. My fascination with aerogels has driven me to explore their commercial potential, which is currently an important component of my company's business plan. Together with my co-workers, I have also worked on the preparation of controlled PZT and silica xerogels as well as thin film coatings of metals by the sol-gel technology, These experiences convinced me of the tremendous potentials of this technology. A conviction that is shared by many scientists, engineers, and business leaders around the globe. Many sol-gel derived products are already articles of commerce. However, to expand the commercial potential of sol-gel technology, two challenges must be met: (1) the quality of sol-gel derived products must continue to meet or exceed the quality of competing products, (2) the production cost of sol-gel products (specially aerogels) must continued to decline. A key to lowering the costs of sol-gel products is finding inexpensive precursors.

Book Sol Gel Technologies for Glass Producers and Users

Download or read book Sol Gel Technologies for Glass Producers and Users written by Michel Andre Aegerter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sol-Gel Techniques for Glass Producers and Users provides technological information, descriptions and characterizations of prototypes, or products already on the market, and illustrates advantages and disadvantages of the sol-gel process in comparison to other methods. The first chapter entitled "Wet Chemical Technology" gives a summary of the basic principles of the sol-gel chemistry. The most promising applications are related to coatings. Chapter 2 describes the various "Wet Chemical Coating Technologies" from glass cleaning to many deposition and post-coating treatment techniques. These include patterning of coatings through direct or indirect techniques which have became very important and for which the sol-gel processing is particularly well adapted. Chapter 3 entitled "Bulk Glass Technologies" reports on the preparation of special glasses for different applications. Chapter 4 entitled "Coatings and Materials Properties" describes the properties of the different coatings and the sol-gel materials, fibers and powders. The chapter also includes a section dedicated to the characterization techniques especially applied to sol-gel coatings and products.

Book Sol Gel Derived Ferroelectric Thin Films for Voltage Tunable Applications

Download or read book Sol Gel Derived Ferroelectric Thin Films for Voltage Tunable Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferroelectric perovskite thin films for voltage tunable applications, namely (Ba, Sr)TiO3 (Barium Strontium Titanate or BST) and (Pb, Sr)TiO3 (Lead Strontium Titanate or PST), are synthesized via the so-called sol-gel route. While BST shows the tendency to severe film cracking, PST can be grown crack free onto platinised Si standard substrates and even directly onto SiO2, SiNx or bare Si. The growth kinetics of PST on platinised SiO2/Si and directly on SiO2/Si are studied in detail using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, SEM and AFM respectively. It is shown that PST begins to crystallise at 500°C on Ti/Pt and 550°C directly on SiO2. After a thermal treatment of 650°C for 15 min both films are fully crystallised with random (100) and (110) orientation and a smooth surface. The dielectric properties, e.g. dielectric constant, loss and tunability, of PST 50/50 are measured using a standard Ti/Pt bottom electrode with Cr/Au top electrodes and a TiW/Cu bottom electrode on which the PST thin film was bonded with TiW/Cu top electrodes. The Cu/PST/Cu system shows an enhanced performance in terms of loss resulting in a larger device quality factor and a figure of merit (FOM) of 18.25 compared to 16.6 for the configuration using a Pt bottom electrode. The maximum tunability is 73% with an applied voltage of 35V and the dielectric constant at zero bias is ~ 420 with a loss

Book Sol gel Derived Ceramic Electrolyte Films on Porous Substrates

Download or read book Sol gel Derived Ceramic Electrolyte Films on Porous Substrates written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A process for the deposition of sol-gel derived thin films on porous substrates has been developed; such films should be useful for solid oxide fuel cells and related applications. Yttria-stabilized zirconia films have been formed from metal alkoxide starting solutions. Dense films have been deposited on metal substrates and ceramic substrates, both dense and porous, through dip-coating and spin-coating techniques, followed by a heat treatment in air. X-ray diffraction has been used to determine the crystalline phases formed and the extent of reactions with various substrates which may be encountered in gas/gas devices. Surface coatings have been successfully applied to porous substrates through the control of substrate pore size and deposition parameters. Wetting of the substrate pores by the coating solution is discussed, and conditions are defined for which films can be deposited over the pores without filling the interiors of the pores. Shrinkage cracking was encountered in films thicker than a critical value, which depended on the sol-gel process parameters and on the substrate characteristics. Local discontinuities were also observed in films which were thinner than a critical value which depended on the substrate pore size. A theoretical discussion of cracking mechanisms is presented for both types of cracking, and the conditions necessary for successful thin formation are defined. The applicability of these film gas/gas devices is discussed.
