Le mot « handicap » reste cependant un terme qui fait peur, ce qui ne facilite pas l'accès à la santé bucco-dentaire de ces personnes. La prise en charge bucco-dentaire reste actuellement insuffisante. Les personnes handicapées moteurs doivent faire face à de nombreux obstacles, tel que l'accessibilité physique au cabinet et au fauteuil dentaire. Cette barrière est cependant en court de résolution avec l'application de la loi du 11 février 2005, pour l'égalité des droits et des chances, la participation et la citoyenneté des personnes handicapées, bien que les échéances de cette loi ne cessent d'être reportées. La relation patient handicapé/praticien est bien souvent un frein à l'accès aux soins bucco-dentaires, les praticiens n'étant pas suffisamment formés à cette prise en charge spécifique. Les difficultés d'accès aux soins bucco-dentaires peuvent également s'expliquer par des raisons financières, aussi bien pour le patient handicapé, que pour le praticien. Le manque d'informations, que ce soit sur la prévention bucco-dentaire ou sur les structures vers lesquelles s'adresser pour une prise en charge, ne facilite pas cette accessibilité. Face à cela, des propositions sont faites, notamment via le rapport Pascal Jacob, pour améliorer l'accès aux soins et la prise en charge bucco-dentaire de ces personnes.
