Book The Reclamation of Alkali Soils Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Reclamation of Alkali Soils Classic Reprint written by Walter Pearson Kelley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reclamation of Alkali Soils However, counteracting forces are often present. For example, if the soluble salts which accumulate in the soil or are applied as constituents of the irrigation water are composed in considerable part of calcium compounds, the adverse chemical and physical edects just alluded to fail to materialize to any great extent. Under such conditions soluble salts do not produce excessive chemical changes in the clay and humus of the soil.' Where this is the case, mere drainage and leaching will suffice to produce complete reclamation of the soil. An example of this type of soil condition is found in the Imperial Valley. As Thomas) has shown, the excessively saline soils of certain parts of the Imperial Valley can be reclaimed readily and be caused to produce large yields of crops by the simple expedient of drainage and leaching without applying any chemical treatment whatever. These soils contain relatively large quan tities of soluble calcium salts as well as large amounts of sodium salts. Book Soil Conditions and Plant Growth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soil Conditions and Plant Growth Classic Reprint written by Edward J. Russell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Conditions and Plant Growth It is hoped that this new arrangement will prove satisfactory to students. It has the advantage that the book still covers the whole ground, while remaining of a manageable size, and that it is closely linked up with a series of similar books, each dealing with separate sections, in which more complete treatment and more fully informed criticism are given than I could myself undertake. On the other hand, the necessity for freedom of treatment, and the difficulty of placing such subjects as Soil Physics or Soil Protozoa under the heading of Biochemistry, compelled the withdrawal of the book from the important Biochemical Series, of which it has hitherto been a member. And, although Drs. Plimmer and Hopkins willingly consented, this course was not taken without serious consideration and regret: it in volves the separation of the book from a very useful series of volumes. Book Soils How to Handle and Improve Them Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soils How to Handle and Improve Them Classic Reprint written by S. W. Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them Many of the early books on farming were written in a technical style. They smacked of the lecture room and the library rather than of the soil. They were scholarly rather than practical. A spirit of directness and simplicity is beginning to dominate agricultural literature. The modern type of farm books is born of actual contact with the soil and a desire to be of service to the men who are getting a living from the soil. They are democratic; they discuss common things in a plain way. The long and tedious tables of figures in the old books are giving place to crisp summaries. The technical lecture-room phrases are replaced by words in common use on farms. The idea is not to present less science - for nothing is so practical as sound science - but to present science in a simple and practical way. This new spirit is contemporaneous with the farmers' institute, the farmer's reading-course, Nature-study, elementary agriculture in the public schools and other efforts to serve the man who tills the soil. It is an expression of a general movement which aims to democracise agricultural teaching. This book is an attempt to set forth the important facts about the soil in a plain and untechnical manner. It is not a contribution to agricultural science, but an interpretation of it - a new presentation of what is already known.
