Book Terzaghi Lectures

Download or read book Terzaghi Lectures written by Karl Terzaghi and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sponsored by the Executive Committee of the Geotechnical Engineering Division of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains eight lectures given between 1974 and 1983 in honor of Karl Terzaghi and repressenting diverse aspects of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology. Topics include: the relationship of geology and geotechnical engineering and how a study of the geology of engineering sites is an important starting point for all geotechnical site studies; effects of dynamic soil properties on soil-structure interaction; bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundations; design and construction of drilled shafts; evaluating calculated risk in geotechnical engineering; proposal forØthe establishment of a national center for investigating civil engineering failures, with several case studies; pre-Columbian earth construction in the Americas and technological developments between 2,500 and 500 years ago; and recent progress in the design and construction of concrete-face rockfill dams. The 1978 lecture by the late N.M. Newmark is not included.

Book Power System Transients

Download or read book Power System Transients written by Akihiro Ametani and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a transient phenomenon can shut down a building or an entire city, transient analysis is crucial to managing and designing electrical systems. Power System Transients: Theory and Applications discusses the basic theory of transient phenomena—including lumped- and distributed-parameter circuit theories—and provides a physical interpretation of the phenomena. It covers novel and topical questions of power system transients and associated overvoltages. Using formulas simple enough to be applied using a pocket calculator, the book presents analytical methods for transient analysis. It examines the theory of numerical simulation methods such as the EMTP (circuit-theory based approach) and numerical electromagnetic analysis. The book highlights transients in clean or sustainable energy systems such as smart grids and wind farms, since they require a different approach than overhead lines and cables. Simulation examples provided include arcing horn flashover, a transient in a grounding electrode, and an induced voltage from a lightning channel.

Book Vadose Zone Hydrology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marc B. Parlange
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1999-08-05
  • ISBN : 0198026994
  • Pages : 473 pages

Download or read book Vadose Zone Hydrology written by Marc B. Parlange and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-08-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vadose zone is the region between ground level and the upper limits of soil fully saturated with water. Hydrology in the zone is complex: nonlinear physical, chemical, and biological interactions all affect the transfer of heat, mass, and momentum between the atmosphere and the water table. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to vadose zone hydrology, bringing together insights from soil science, hydrology, biology, chemistry, physics, and instrumentation design. The chapters present state-of-the-art research, focusing on new frontiers in theory, experiment, and management of soils. The collection addresses the full range of processes, from the pore-scale to field and landscape scales.
