Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Survey of the Middle Gila Valley Area, Arizona The Middle Gila Valley area is situated in the south-central part of Arizona, mainly in Pinal County, only 2 square miles being in Maricopa County. It lies in a region of isolated or discontinuous, barren, rocky peaks and ranges, mainly of eruptive and crystalline formations, which rise from mping or nearly level desert plains. This part of the State is recognized physiographically as the Desert region, in contrast to the much higher lying Plateau region Of sedi mentary rocks occupying the northern and northeastern parts of the State. AS the title implies, the survey includes the middle valley of the Gila River, which presents a contrast to both the upper valley, in the eastern part of the State, and the lower desert valley above the confluence of the Gila River with the Colorado. Download or read book The Davis Ranch Site written by Rex E. Gerald and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new volume, the results of Rex E. Gerald’s 1957 excavations at the Davis Ranch Site in southeastern Arizona’s San Pedro River Valley are reported in their entirety for the first time. Annotations to Gerald’s original manuscript in the archives of the Amerind Museum and newly written material place Gerald’s work in the context of what is currently known regarding the late thirteenth-century Kayenta diaspora and the relationship between Kayenta immigrants and the Salado phenomenon. Data presented by Gerald and other contributors identify the site as having been inhabited by people from the Kayenta region of northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. The results of Gerald’s excavations and Archaeology Southwest’s San Pedro Preservation Project (1990–2001) indicate that the people of the Davis Ranch Site were part of a network of dispersed immigrant enclaves responsible for the origin and spread of Roosevelt Red Ware pottery, the key material marker of the Salado phenomenon. A companion volume to Charles Di Peso’s 1958 publication on the nearby Reeve Ruin, archaeologists working in the U.S. Southwest and other researchers interested in ancient population movements and their consequences will consider this work an essential case study.

Book Projectile Point Typology

Download or read book Projectile Point Typology written by Chris Loendorf and published by Gila River Indian Community. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Loendorf and Rice of the Gila River Indian Community's Cultural Resource Management Program reports on the nearly 1,000 projectile points or point preforms that were collected by archaeological survey crews during inventory of more than 146,000 acres of the reservation. This work is focused on the set of definitions for a classification system that is primarily intended to separate the points into temporally sensitive categories. The volume includes detailed metric data and photographs of the every point in the collection so that other researchers interested in prehistoric and historic lithic technology can build upon the typological classification system that is developed. More detailed metric and attribute based analyses of the projectile points are available in a subsequent publication in this series, entitled "The Hohokam-Akimel O'odham Continuum: Sociocultural Dynamics and Projectile Point Design in the Phoenix Basin, Arizona".
