Book Sociology in the United States of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sociology in the United States of America Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sociology in the United States of America It is no longer feasible for one to master all phases of sociological research findings in the United States. We therefore deemed the best trend report to be a team report. The project was initiated in March 1955 and completed four months later. I would like to express my thanks to the contributors of this publication who, in spite of other commitments, were able to meet the tight time schedule of this project with such creditable articles. The review is limited to the post war period. Since no previous publication of this kind is available, the authors have been encouraged to state briefly the history of their fields. The difficulties in surveying the vast amount of research of the past decade within the narrow limits of this publication have been considerable. Certain omissions have been necessary, the most important of which is the field of demography, which is usually considered a part of sociology in the United States. However, the international exchange of demographic research is already well established and the benefits of including it in this book would be small. American sociology lacks a tradition of periodical reviews and surveys of the literature. We are grateful to Unesco for initiating this kind of service, which is undoubtedly necessary for any science of the maturity and scope of sociology. The chapters in this book illustrate some different models for such reviews, and these should be of great interest to those who in the future are to build up this worthwhile tradition of periodical reviews. May I also express my appreciation to Miss Lois Roth for bibliographical assistance and to the Bureau of Applied Social Research at Columbia University for handling some of the clerical details of this project. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of American Regional Sociology Furthermore, in the case of the United States, not only is there a need for cooperative attack upon the problems within a region, but there is also a division of labor between regions in which the control of regional planning is in the hands of the nation. In many of man's social activities regional divi sion of labor is between aggregates under different national jurisdictions-trading English-manufactured goods for Argentine meat. In the United States the manufactured goods from one region of the country are most often traded for farm goods from another region in the same country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Town: A Sociological Study It has occurred to many of us that the great pity is, not that we are so ignorant of cosmic forces, but that we know so many things that are not so - particularly, disagreeable things about each other. The study of society reveals nothing more clearly than that a fundamental impulse of human nature is the combative or dominating impulse. Out of it springs avarice, prejudice and all kindred evils. This little study of Blanktown has been made with the hope that it may make people more thoughtful and generous in their attitude to one another by making them more intelligent. The purpose of sociology is a very practical one. It is to encourage not sympathy merely, but a manly and womanly regard for each others' interests, arising out of a due sense of the worth of each others' goodwill. This has nowhere been more perfectly expressed than in the words of Abraham Lincoln, uttered when was a young man, twenty-three years of age: "Every man is said to have his peculiar ambition. Whether it be so or not, I can say for one that I have no other so great as that of being truly esteemed of my fellow men by rendering myself worthy of their esteem." The study of human motives is, however, by no means a simple matter. The author does not concur in the popular notion that while other sciences may be permitted the use of expressions and methods which bewilder the uninitiated, yet sociology should speak so plainly that a wayfaring man, though a fool, need not err therein. All serious students of sociology have found that, far from being free from the technicalities which make other sciences difficult, sociology is the most complicated of all the sciences. Accordingly, we must refuse at the outset to simplify matters at the expense of truthfulness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Urban Community: Selected Papers From the Proceedings of the American Sociological Society, 1925 As a matter of fact, the city has been the happy hunting ground of movements: the better-government movement, the social-work movement, the public-health movement, the playground movement, the social-center movement, the settlement movement, the Americanization movement. All these movements, lacking a basic understanding or conception of the city, have relied upon administrative devices, for the most part, to correct the evils of city life. Even the community organization movement, theoretically grounded upon a conception of the city as a unit, had the misfor tune to stake its program upon an assumption of the supreme value of the revival of the neighborhood in the city instead of upon a prag matic, experimental program guided by studies of actual conditions and trends in urban life. But as our book is intended to prove that we are indebted to domestic slavery for our happy exemption from the social af ictions that have originated this philosophy, it became necessary and appropriate that we should employ this new word in our title. The fact that, before the institution Of Free Society, there was no such term, and that it is not in use in slave countries, now, shows pretty clearly that Slave Society, ancient and modern, has ever been in so happy a condition, so exempt from ailments, that no doctors have arisen to treat it of its complaints, or to propose remedies for their cure. The term, there fore, is not only appropriate to the subject and the occasion, but pregnantly suggestive Of facts and argu. Book Factors in American Civilization

Download or read book Factors in American Civilization written by Brooklyn Ethical Association and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Factors in American Civilization: Studies in Applied Sociology The consideration of the general topics of current political and economic importance in Man and the State led naturally to the discussion of those special circumstances and conditions - physical, sociological, and economic - which hare entered as factors into the growth of our American civilization. In both these courses of lectures the aim and effort has been to apply to the study of the topics therein treated the sound scientific and evolutionary principles outlined and exemplified in the previous works issued by the Brooklyn Ethical Association - Evolution, Sociology, and Evolution in Science, Philosophy, and Art. That every lecture in these volumes constitutes a wholly satisfactory and final application of evolutionary principles to the problems treated is by no means to be assumed. The social and economic philosophy implied in the doctrine of evolution is nowhere yet completely formulated. Mr. Spencer has given the world an admirable statement and argument of general principles in his epoch-making Synthetic Philosophy, but he has left to others the application of these principles to the detailed problems of social and economic science, as well as to those of physics and theology. Many able writers in Europe and America are to-day contributing to the growth of these yet inchoate sciences. To this end these lectures may be regarded as an humble contribution. The concentration of the thought of many able minds upon a limited and definite field of research and investigation gives it, we believe, a cumulative value which seldom results from isolated study, and justifies the careful consideration of these lectures by students of political and economic science. In the arrangement of topics, and the assignment thereof to their chosen exponents, as well as in the discussion following each lecture, the aim has been, as heretofore, to avoid all partisan bias, and to secure a fair representation of both sides of all disputed questions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Sociology, 1923, Vol. 28 Nevertheless one cannot fail to recognize that the very power of the warlike tradition itself must be due to the fact that it not only was, but is, compatible with certain elements in human nature. Men, and women also, display too keen an interest, as Professor Thomas has shown, i in Violent and precarious activities, to excuse the student of war in any neglect of its instinctive aspects, of which we must take account in the following section. There is room, however, to question whether the ruling classes went to the appall ing tasks of the world-war with quite as much zest for the gaming aspect of it as they had, according to Professor Thomas, displayed toward the spanish-american and Boer wars, which have been reduced, in our new perspective, to very slight skirmishes indeed. Moreover, we should not assume, in any case, too much rigidity about human nature itself. Old dispositions may be directed toward new Objects, and the particular character of these Objects can be partly determined by deliberate reorganization of cultural elements, such as traditions, ideals, and institutions. When one turns from these over-simple interpretations Of war, and seeks to supplement them by a more prolonged search, it is found that its roots are not one but many. They bear at the same time such diverse fruits as hatred and love; the ruthless destruction of others and the utterly reckless sacrifice Of one's own life for others; the constant interchange of murderous missiles, and the occasional exchange, between the very same men, of songs, newspapers, and tobacco - all these and other strange and illogical anomalies.
