Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume examines the `big business', such as health care corporations and insurance companies, that has grown up around rehabilitation of the disabled in the United States, and the impact that this has had on care. Albrecht discusses how the quality of care is influenced by income, income potential and insurance cover and traces how the financial growth in this industry has changed the nature of the care provided. He also presents a realistic assessment of the policy options and solutions available to a society that values equity in ensuring that quality rehabilitation services are equally available to all.

Book Recovery and Mental Health

Download or read book Recovery and Mental Health written by David Pilgrim and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of us, the term 'recovery' in mental health implies hope and normality for those suffering from emotional distress. It is understandable why recovery has therefore become a significant goal for mental health services. But what does recovery mean for those who are struggling to see it through? Is the emphasis on recovery always a positive thing. This book takes a critical sociological look at personal and public assumptions and understandings. In particular: - It explores what the recovery movement signifies today, offering readers a critical, reflexive view of its scientific, policy and political consequences - It considers what recovery means from social, medical and patient perspectives, and the implications of these conflicting views - It reveals some of the risks and benefits for people with mental health problems encountering a system that expects them to recover Offering a comprehensive and thought-provoking overview of the concept of recovery from mental illness, this book is a must-have for students studying mental health across a range of subjects, including sociology, social work, psychology and nursing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection provides a broad coverage of recent changes in medical and vocational rehabilitation in Northern Europe. It presents analyses that cut across health sciences, medical sociology, disability studies and comparative welfare state research. Through this interdisciplinary perspective, the book explores the changing roles of patients, caregivers, professionals and institutions, and the wider implications of these changes for social inequalities in health. What obstacles do different groups of patients encounter when negotiating the complex chains of medical and vocational services? Who decides regarding references to specialized treatments, and the provision of comprehensive and coordinated services, and different types of benefits and material support? What is the importance of the resources that patients and caregivers bring to bear in the rehabilitation process?

Download or read book Remaking the Body written by Wendy Seymour and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Remaking the Body, Wendy Seymour interviews men and women who have suffered profound bodily paralysis, and explores how they deal with their appearance, relationships, sexuality, incontinence and sport. She finds that even major impairment hasn't annihilated these people's experience of an embodied self. She shows that the process of self-reconstruction is interwoven with social expectations and argues that the experience of disability highlights the continuous work involved in embodiment for everyone. Remaking the Body is a major contribution to the field of the sociology of the body and essential reading for rehabilitation professionals and students.

Book Rehabilitation and Deviance Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Rehabilitation and Deviance Routledge Revivals written by Philip Bean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, this book examines rehabilitation within the penal system in Britain in the 1970s. It argues that the ‘rehabilitative ideal’ is not the only possible alternative to a penal policy but an option which has now become institutionalized and alien to traditional concepts of justice. Using a framework derived from the sociology of law, Philip Bean looks at aspects of rehabilitation as it is operated in the courts and in certain penal institutions. He shows how the concept of rehabilitation has had an important but harmful effect on penal policy as it is often incompatible with penal aims. This book considers the impact that sentencing, social enquiry reports and modern prison policies have on rehabilitation. The concluding chapter asks for a return to concepts of justice and a move away from discussions about personal lives of deviant members of society.

Book Delinquency Crime and Differential Association

Download or read book Delinquency Crime and Differential Association written by Donald Ray Cressey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about Edwin H. Sutherland's theory of differ ential association. I received my Ph. D. from Indiana University, where I worked with Sutherland, and the volume is made up principally of my writings on differential association during the years 1952-1963. However, the volume is neither a festschrift nor a book of reprints. The original materials have in most cases been quite severely edited in order to give the volume coherence and in order to minimize repetition and redundancy. For example, portions of one journal article appear in Chapters I, IV and V; parts of a chapter published in a recent book appear in Chapters I, II and III; and Chapter IX is composed of two inter-related articles, published eight years apart. Chapter I has not appeared elsewhere in its present form, but most of it consists of snippets culled from several of my articles and books and woven together in new form. The book is intended primarily for non-American readers, who on the whole are not as familiar with Sutherland's theory (or with other sociological and social psychological theories about delinquency, crime and corrections) as are Americans. Yet at least a nodding acquaintance with Sutherland's work is becoming increasingly necessary to an intelligent reading of the American literature in criminology.
