Que ce soit du point de vue sociologique, ou plus largement de celui du sens commun, ce groupe de personnes est peu connu dans la mesure où il n'est pas constitué en catégorie clairement repérable et qui fait sens tout de suite. Ainsi, lorsque l'on se promène dans les villages, mis à part les agriculteurs immédiatement identifiés, on imagine mal qui sont les habitants, pourquoi ils sont là, de quoi ils vivent, s'ils sont riches ou pauvres, comment ils vivent etc. Sans nier l'intérêt d'aborder la problématique du rural à partir de catégories d'individus spécifiques, les agriculteurs, les néo-ruraux, etc., nous allons pour notre part nous intéresser à toute la population qui répond simplement à ce seul critère : habiter un village. Celle-ci constitue ce que nous avons appelé les villageois.
