The authors include practical applications and current educational issues to discuss the structure and processes that make education systems work as well as the role sociologists play in both understanding and bring about change. In addition to up-to-date examples and research, the eighth edition presents three chapters on inequality in educational access and experiences, where class, race and ethnicity, and gender are presented as separate (though intersecting) vectors of educational inequality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, first published in 1985, the author explores the construction of educational ideologies and assesses to what extent they are put into practice by the teachers. He examines the ‘politics’ of education within the school; the extent to which the head teacher, as the bureaucratic authority in the school, seeks to impose his or her own views and the degree to which teachers see themselves as possessing professional autonomy. The study also pays attention to status differentiation within the education of the working class and explores the educational consequences of ethnic and gender status group membership. This title will be of interest to sociology and education.

Download or read book Niklas Luhmann written by Claudio Baraldi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an insight into the ideas of one of the world’s greatest sociologists: Niklas Luhmann. It explains, in clear and concise language, the basic concepts of Social Systems Theory and their application to the specific case of the Education System, which was considered by Luhmann as a primary subsystem of modern society. It illustrates the complex and sophisticated thinking that characterises Luhmann’s work and explains that Luhmann’s theory has given an important and original contribution to the study of education from a sociological point of view. His contribution has some resonance in recent social constructionist and relational approaches to education, as well as in studies of educational interaction. In addition, research methodologies, in particular mixed methods strategies, draw heavily on epistemological issues. The book finally argues that educationists can appreciate the extent of Luhmann’s contribution to the field of education, although their perspective cannot be fully harmonised with, nor reduced to, the sociological one. This divergence of perspectives can stimulate pedagogy to call into question its conceptual framework as well its approach to social situations in the classroom.

Book Education Assessment and Society

Download or read book Education Assessment and Society written by Patricia Broadfoot and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comparative account of the evolution of examinations and other assessment procedures in England and France. By tracing the similarities and differences in the ways in which the two countries provided for the assessment of occupational competence, for managing the need for educational and social selection and for social control, the author shows that changes in assessment reflect changes in the priorities and preoccupations of society as a whole. Assessment is seen as rising in the context of increasing social competition within emerging industrial societies.
