Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Staff Discussion Note examines the effect of gender-based legal restrictions and other policy choices and demographic characteristics on female labor force participation. Drawing on a large and novel panel data set of gender-related legal restrictions, the study finds that restrictions on women’s rights to inheritance and property, as well as legal impediments to undertaking economic activities such as opening a bank account or freely pursuing a profession, are strongly associated with larger gender gaps in labor force participation. These factors have a significant additional impact on female labor force participation over and above the effects of demographic characteristics and policies. In many cases, the gender gaps caused by these restrictions also have macro-critical effects in terms of an impact on GDP. The results from this study suggest that it would be beneficial to level the playing field by removing obstacles that prevent women from becoming economically active if they choose to do so. In recommending equal opportunities, however, this study does not intend to render a judgment of countries’ broadly accepted cultural and religious norms.

Book The Demographic Dividend

Download or read book The Demographic Dividend written by David Bloom and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2003-02-13 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is long-standing debate on how population growth affects national economies. A new report from Population Matters examines the history of this debate and synthesizes current research on the topic. The authors, led by Harvard economist David Bloom, conclude that population age structure, more than size or growth per se, affects economic development, and that reducing high fertility can create opportunities for economic growth if the right kinds of educational, health, and labor-market policies are in place. The report also examines specific regions of the world and how their differing policy environments have affected the relationship between population change and economic development.

Book Determinants of Female Labor Force Participation in Venezuela

Download or read book Determinants of Female Labor Force Participation in Venezuela written by Betilde Rincon de Munoz and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to fill the gap in research about women in Venezuela by investigating the determinants of their labor force participation between 1995 and 1998. The Central Office of Statistics and Information in Venezuela provides cross-sectional data collected semiannually about individual, demographic, socio-economic and geographical characteristics of individuals living in Venezuela during this period. This study uses binomial and multinomial logit models to test a number of hypotheses. First, the full sample of women between 15 and 60 years old is used to investigate the importance of individual, demographic, socioeconomic, and geographical characteristics in the labor force participation decision, also controlling for a time trend. The same decision is also analyzed for three subsamples: married women, single women, and women heads of household. Comparisons are made between each subsample and the full sample, and also among the different subsamples. Next, multinomial regressions using the same explanatory variables are performed to examine labor market behavior when there is a three-way choice: whether to participate in the formal sector, the informal sector or not to participate in the labor market at all. The multinomial regressions are also performed on the three subsamples as well as on the full sample. Again comparisons are made between each subsample and the full sample and also among the three subsamples. The results of these analyses show considerable differences in motivating factors among the three groups. The conclusion that must be drawn from this research is that one cannot generalize about the women's labor force participation just by studying the behavior of women in the aggregate. The relative importance of motivating factors depends strongly on the specific subsample to which a woman belongs, a fact unrevealed by previous empirical work. The more detailed analyses produced by this dissertation provide deeper understanding of the labor force participation of Venezuelan women. This information will make a valuable contribution to policy-makers who seek to encourage the important economic contribution of women to this previously under-studied labor market.

Book An Analysis Of The Determinants Of Female Participation In Paid Jobs

Download or read book An Analysis Of The Determinants Of Female Participation In Paid Jobs written by IBRAR. HUSSAIN and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female labor force participation impacts various aspects of socio-economic well being of households in Malakand Division. Female participation in paid jobs not only enhances households' standard of living but empowers them as well. The present study adopts a two pronged approach; first to fill the gaps of the previous studies and consider more socio-cultural, demographic and ethnic variables for the analysis and secondly, to assess the impact of female participation in paid employment on their socio-economic empowerment in the study area where cultural and religious norms are deeply rooted. The study contributes to the existing literature by developing Social and Economic Empowerment Indices to analyze the impact of female participation in paid employment on their social and economic empowerment. Binary Logistic Regression technique was used to estimate the determinants of female participation in paid jobs in the study area.

Book Women in the Labour Market in Changing Economies

Download or read book Women in the Labour Market in Changing Economies written by Brígida García and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-05-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a central issue in understanding recent changes in demographic patterns and the labour market - the increased participation of women in the workforce, and how the nature of this participation has developed. In the context of such economic and labour phenomena as globalization, increasing flexibilty in work patterns, intermittent and part-time employment, and in many countries high underemployment or unemployment, the role of women workers has transformed dramatically. This book explores a number of demographic issues associated with these developments, such as migration in the developed world and transition economies, family formation and dissolution, the autonomy of women migrants, household composition, the evolution of gender systems, and contraceptive behaviour, both as factors that determine the labour market conditions for women and their income levels, and as demographic outcomes. The studies cover a wide-range of situations, from societies with a strong patriarchal ideology and residential female seclusion, to industrialized countries with policies designed to assist women manage both a work and a family role, and makes use of extensive data sets collected at country level. The Editors have sought to maintain an interdisciplinary outlook in the book, and to draw policy implications from the various socio-economic situations examined.

Book Female Labor Force Participation and Economic Development

Download or read book Female Labor Force Participation and Economic Development written by S. Haber and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study focuses on the relationship between economic development and trends in female labor force participation. The discussion is confined to the United States. The study is divided into four parts. With economic development, longevity has increased - more so for females than for males. As a result, the share of females and elderly persons in the working-age population has increased. For the periods 1900-1930 and 1930-1950, the relation between changes in the sex-age composition of the working-age population and the rise in the share of females in the labor force is investigated. In section II, factors that may influence the supply of female labor services at a moment of time and over time are surveyed. The variables include (1) the decline in the birth rate and in average family size, (2) the spread of education, (3) urbanization, (4) the reduction in the length of the work week, (5) changes in the legal, political, and social statue of women, (6) the growth in real income, and (7) the reduction in housework. In section III factors influencing the demand for female labor services are examined. The analysis is based on the relation between the job characteristics of various occupations and the characteristics of women as active workers. in section IV a procedure is adopted for testing the relation between the growth of the distribution and service industries and the rise in the share of females in the labor force.

Book Analyzing the Labor Force

Download or read book Analyzing the Labor Force written by Clifford C. Clogg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-12-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the passing of Clifford Collier Clogg at the age of 45 on May 7th 1995, the world lost a talented sociologist, demographer, and statistician all at once. In addition to being a considerable talent in each of these three disciplines, and perhaps more importantly, Cliff was the type of person who brought to gether diverse elements and scholars from all three. Cliff was also a consum mate mentor, nurturing ideas and students and always striving to bring out the best in both. Perhaps nothing illustrates the stature, impact, and respect others held for Cliff more than the fact that never before-and never since has an individual been honored at the time of his death with ceremonies from the national associations of all three of these disciplines. The purpose of this book is to introduce to a broad constituency of social scientists and their students some of the basic ideas in the study of the labor force that Cliff and his colleagues had grappled with. At the time of Cliff's death, he was perhaps better known for his methodological contributions to sociology and demography than he was for his substantive contributions to the study of social stratification and the labor force. Our goal is to highlight Cliff's substantive contributions to sociology and demography by telling the cumulative story of his research and adding updated analysis that advances the story beyond the early 1980s to the mid-1990s.

Book Aging and the Macroeconomy

Download or read book Aging and the Macroeconomy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. In the coming decades, people aged 65 and over will make up an increasingly large percentage of the population: The ratio of people aged 65+ to people aged 20-64 will rise by 80%. This shift is happening for two reasons: people are living longer, and many couples are choosing to have fewer children and to have those children somewhat later in life. The resulting demographic shift will present the nation with economic challenges, both to absorb the costs and to leverage the benefits of an aging population. Aging and the Macroeconomy: Long-Term Implications of an Older Population presents the fundamental factors driving the aging of the U.S. population, as well as its societal implications and likely long-term macroeconomic effects in a global context. The report finds that, while population aging does not pose an insurmountable challenge to the nation, it is imperative that sensible policies are implemented soon to allow companies and households to respond. It offers four practical approaches for preparing resources to support the future consumption of households and for adapting to the new economic landscape.
