Book excerpt: Indigeneity in Latin American Cinema explores how contemporary films (2000-2020) participate in the evolution and circulation of images and sounds that in many ways define how indigenous communities are imagined, at a local, regional and global scale. The volume reviews the diversity of portrayals from a chronological, geopolitical, linguistic, epistemic-ontological, transnational and intersectional, paradigm-changing and self-representational perspective, allocating one chapter to each theme. The corpus of this study consists of 68 fictional features directed by non-indigenous filmmakers, 31 cinematic works produced by indigenous directors/communities, and 22 Cine Regional (Regional Cinema) films. The book also draws upon a significant number of engravings, drawings, paintings, photographs and films, produced between 1493 and 2000, as primary sources for the historical review of the visual representations of indigeneity. Through content and close (textual) analysis, interviews with audiences, surveys and social media posts analysis, the author looks at the contexts in which Latin American films circulate in international festivals and the paradigm shifts introduced by self-representational cinema and Roma (Mexico, 2018). Conclusively, the author provides the foundations of histrionic indigeneity, a theory that explains how overtly histrionic proclivities play a significant role in depictions of an imagined indigenous Other in recent films.

Utilizing a critical comparative method , it sheds a critical light on the presumed depoliticization (or new, aestheticized politicization) of contemporary Latin American cinema. The combined textual and industrial analyses of films from strikingly different cinemas and directors through the lenses of class allows for a contextualization of this trend and the observation of its limitations. Furthermore, this book distinguishes cinematic figurations that correspond to new conceptualizations of class introduced in social studies from figurations of class that have yet to be conceptualized.

Three decades later, however, transnational audio-visual corporations such as Netflix have transformed the traumatic memories into entertainment and the main perpetrator, Pablo Escobar, was converted into a brand. While global audiences learn about Escobar's life and myth, his victims's stories fade into oblivion. Victimhood, Memory, and Consumerism: Profiting from Pablo documents the story of violence that took place in Medellín and critically examines the position of its victims. Drawing on unique empirical material, the book addresses the consequences of commercial exploitation of the city's violent past for victims of mass drug violence, and for the present nature of the city. To demonstrate the magnitude of the profits made from the legacy of Pablo Escobar, the authors cover a range of topics. Firstly, they describe how the immense popularity of narco-series has caused the city's suffering to be appropriated by commercial forces to entertain global audiences; secondly, they detail the Escobar tours, souvenirs, and artefacts offered by Medellín's tourist industry; and, finally, they expose the less visible profits made by political and social actors who engage in the global mythmaking surrounding Escobar. Through interviews with those directly affected by drug violence, the authors show that these cultural forces have immediate symbolic and material consequences. Victimhood, Memory, and Consumerism offers a telling critique of how the global market economy allots uneven narrative power to those engaged in processes of collective memory construction, with the broader aim of addressing an issue that has so far been neglected within criminology, international criminal justice, and victimology: the position of victims of large-scale drug violence.
