Book On English Homophones

Download or read book On English Homophones written by Robert Bridges and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'On English Homophones' by Robert Bridges is an insightful analysis of the English language's over 800 ambiguous sounds, which make for a clumsy and imperfect instrument for communication. Bridges notes that while we have grown accustomed to the vast number of homophones in the language, they still pose a radical mischief to its scientific and convenient usage. Through his use of examples, such as the word "beam," Bridges demonstrates how different meanings of the same word can make practical homophones, leading to absurdities that we are no longer aware of. This work is a must-read for anyone interested in the intricacies of language and communication.

Book Homophones and Homographs

Download or read book Homophones and Homographs written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 861 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This expanded fourth edition defines and cross-references 9,040 homophones and 2,133 homographs (up from 7,870 and 1,554 in the 3rd ed.). As the most comprehensive compilation of American homophones (words that sound alike) and homographs (look-alikes), this latest edition serves well where even the most modern spell-checkers and word processors fail--although rain, reign, and rein may be spelled correctly, the context in which these words may appropriately be used is not obvious to a computer.

Book The Dialect of Modernism

Download or read book The Dialect of Modernism written by Michael North and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dialect of Modernism uncovers the crucial role of racial masquerade and linguistic imitation in the emergence of literary modernism. Rebelling against the standard language, and literature written in it, modernists, such as Joseph Conrad, Gertrude Stein, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams reimagined themselves as racial aliens and mimicked the strategies of dialect speakers in their work. In doing so, they made possible the most radical representational strategies of modern literature, which emerged from their attack on the privilege of standard language. At the same time, however, another movement, identified with Harlem, was struggling to free itself from the very dialect the modernists appropriated, at least as it had been rendered by two generations of white dialect writers. For writers such as Claude McKay, Jean Toomer, and Zora Neale Hurston, this dialect became a barrier as rigid as the standard language itself. Thus, the two modern movements, which arrived simultaneously in 1922, were linked and divided by their different stakes in the same language. In The Dialect of Modernism, Michael North shows, through biographical and historical investigation, and through careful readings of major literary works, that however different they were, the two movements are inextricably connected, and thus, cannot be considered in isolation. Each was marked, for good and bad, by the other.
