Download or read book The General written by Joseph Hanaway and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Officially founded in 1819, the Montreal General Hospital is recognized as a pioneering institution in North America for the many discoveries in medical research made there and for its early association with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University - the first medical school in Canada. Covering nearly 200 years of history, The General relates the story of the hospital from its origins and founding to the transition and aftermath of its incorporation into the McGill University Health Centre in 1997. With contributions that show the perspectives of clinicians, nurses, surgeons, professors, and administrators, chapters chronicle the history of particular departments and specializations of the hospital, including cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, obstetrics, emergency medicine, pathology, and radiology, as well as nursing, administration, and governance. Among the major turning points in the history of the hospital were the introduction of autopsy pathology by Sir William Osler, the debut of the electrocardiograph by Thomas Cotton in 1914, the discovery of a malignant tumour marker by Phil Gold and Samuel Freedman in 1965, its transformation from a community hospital serving anglophone Montreal to an internationally recognized academic centre during the 1950s and ’60s, and changes in governance due to the 1970 Quebec Medicare Act. Both a collective reminiscence and an extensive institutional history, The General is an engaging account of one prominent hospital’s development over nearly 200 years.

Download or read book Perspectives on Transitions in Schooling and Instructional Practice written by Susan E. Elliott-Johns and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives on Transitions in Schooling and Instructional Practice examines student transitions between major levels of schooling, teacher transitions in instructional practice, and the intersection of these two significant themes in education research. Twenty-six leading international experts offer meaningful insights on current pedagogical practices, obstacles to effective transitions, and proven strategies for stakeholders involved in supporting students in transition. The book is divided into four sections, representing the four main transitions in formal schooling: Early Years (Home, Pre-school, and Kindergarten) to Early Elementary (Grades 1–3); Early Elementary to Late Elementary (Grades 4–8); Late Elementary to Secondary (Grades 9–12); and Secondary to Post-Secondary (College and University). A coda draws together over-arching themes from throughout the text to provide recommendations and a visual model that captures their interactions. Combining theoretical approaches with practical examples of school-based initiatives, this book will appeal to those involved in supporting either the student experience (both academically and emotionally) or teacher professional learning and growth.

Download or read book Language Policy written by William Eggington and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1997-02-24 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Think globally, act locally’ is the message of Language Policy: Dominant English, Pluralist Challenges. The book examines the impact of English in countries in which it is taken for granted — Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA. It explores how the dominance of English impacts on the development of national language policies, the maintenance of minority languages, the ability to provide services in other languages, the efforts to promote first language and bilingual education programs, and the opportunities for adult and child second language and literacy training. The book examines language and language-in-education policies in these countries and the extent to which English influences some policies or preludes others. It explores the viability of a statement on national language policies that could be adopted by the International Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) organization as a statement of principles. The book explores how to raise issues of individual, social and educational responsibilities that TESOL members must face as they are influenced by, and can influence, the language policy agendas established in these countries. It explores what can be learned from other English dominant nations, and compares language policy and practice, developing a more cross-national view on rights and responsibilities in language and language-in-education in these five dominant nations.

Download or read book Pinay on the Prairies written by Glenda Tibe Bonifacio and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many Filipinos, one word – kumusta, how are you – is all it takes to forge a connection with a stranger anywhere in the world. In Canada’s Prairie provinces, this connection has inspired community building and created both national and transnational identities for the women who identify as Pinay. This book is the first to look beyond traditional metropolitan hubs of settlement to explore the migration of Filipino women in Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Based on interviews with first-generation immigrant Filipino women and temporary foreign workers, this book explores how the shared experience of migration forms the basis for new identities, communities, transnational ties, and multiple levels of belonging in Canada. A groundbreaking look at the experience of Filipino women in Canada, Bonifacio’s work is simultaneously an investigation of feminism, migration, diaspora, and the rubric of multiculturalism in a global era.
