Book excerpt: When Kofi and Pam, a young couple living in urban Calgary, got engaged, they decided to honour their African traditions, travelling to Ruwa, Zimbabwe to perform the Lobola (Bride Price) Ceremony prior to the Western-style wedding ceremony they would have upon their return to Canada. The groom's father acts as the narrator in this cultural, social, and romantic expedition, taking us through the events leading up to and following the ceremony, and offering us a firsthand look at the often misunderstood and maligned ceremony itself. Between the often-amusing exploits of his Canadian family, experiencing the unpredictability of the African wildlife for the first time, and the historical insights he offers regarding the sometimes-surprising cultural differences they encounter, Jonas captures this pivotal period in his family's life with a unique narrative keepsake they will likely treasure for years to come. But it has a lot to offer those of us who aren't a part of this familial circle as well. Part romantic familial adventure and part anthropological study, Bride Price: Lobola Narrative and Interpretation is sure to engage your emotions, even as it informs.

Download or read book Marriage Rites and Rights written by Joanna Miles and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen extensive discussion about the continuing retreat from marriage, the increasing demand for the right to marry from previously excluded groups, and the need to protect those who do not wish to marry from being forced to do so. At the same time, weddings are big business, couples are spending more than ever before on getting married, and marriage ceremonies are increasingly elaborate. It is therefore timely to reflect on the rites of marriage, as well as the right to marry (or not to marry), and the relationship between them. To this end, this new interdisciplinary collection brings together scholars from numerous fields, including law, sociology, anthropology, psychology, demography, theology and art and design. Focusing on England and Wales, it explores in depth the specific issues arising from this jurisdiction's Anglican heritage, demographic development, current laws and social practices.

Book Marriage and Inequality in Classless Societies

Download or read book Marriage and Inequality in Classless Societies written by Jane Fishburne Collier and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents three ideal-typic models for analyzing inequality in kin-based, non-stratified societies that are commonly described as bands, tribes or ranked societies (but not chiefdoms). Each model discusses the organization of inequality associated with a particular way of validating marriages. The book is a serious and complex attempt to understand the bases and dynamics of inequality in classless societies. It offers a sophisticated argument for the position that there is a culturally-structured basis for women's universal subordination. An important strength of Collier's theoretical interpretation is that it makes the case for universality of subordination without slipping into biological reductionism.

Book Global Dictionary of Theology

Download or read book Global Dictionary of Theology written by William A. Dyrness and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-10-25 with total page 1026 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theological dictionaries are foundational to any theological library. But until now there has been no Global Dictionary of Theology, a theological dictionary that presumes the contribution of the Western tradition but moves beyond it to embrace and explore a full range of global expressions of theology. The Global Dictionary of Theology is inspired by the shift of the center of Christianity from the West to the Global South. But it also reflects the increase in two-way traffic between these two sectors as well as the global awareness that has permeated popular culture to an unprecedented degree. The editorial perspective of the Global Dictionary of Theology is an ecumenical evangelicalism that is receptive to discovering new facets of truth through listening and conversation on a global scale. Thus a distinctive feature of the Global Dictionary of Theology is its conversational approach. Contributors have been called on to write in the spirit of engaging in a larger theological conversation in which alternative views are expected and invited. William A. Dyrness, Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, Juan F. Martinez and Simon Chan edit approximately 250 articles written by over 100 contributors representing the global spectrum of theological perspectives. Pastors, theological teachers, theological students and lay Christian leaders will all find the Global Dictionary of Theology to be a resource that unfolds new dimensions and reveals new panoramas of theological perspective and inquiry. Here is a new launching point for doing theology in today's global context.
