Download or read book Socialism Versus the State Classic Reprint written by Emile Vandervelde and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism Versus the State This book was at the point of completion when the war broke out. I carried the manuscript to Anvers, then to Ostend and to Havre. One of my co-workers found it, and having read it, advised me to publish without waiting longer. (R)n reflection, I have followed this advice: th problems which concerned me in 1914 have not ceased to be problems. On the contrary, they will assert themselves after peace comes, with a force multiplied a hundred-fold by the crushing financial burdens that the war will leave behind it. Book Socialists and Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Socialists and Socialism Classic Reprint written by Thomas Edward Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialists and Socialism F you've nothing else to do and are at all interested in the subject, suppose you come along with me, and have a look at the Howling Dervishes. It takes all sorts of folks to make a world, you know, and the Howling Dervish is a time-honored institution. He has enormous faith in himself, and no amount of the opposition literature could exterminate him. He's a fix ture, the Howling D. Is, and we must reconcile ourselves to him, as we do to other inevitable and unescapable actualities. The most amusing thing about the modern H. Dervish is, that he considers himself something new under the sun. He isn't. Plato dreamed of him; ancient Sparta knew him well: each savage tribe had to shake him off and even the American colonies experimented with him. In their young and silly days. But the Socialists of our time bitterly deny the possession of a historic lineage, and wildly claim originality as they bowl and whirl. If you have no decided preference as to what part of the Socialist capon shall be put on your plate, I'll begin with young Robert Hunter. Young Robert is the Socialist leader who worked a get-rich-quick scheme by marrying a millionaire's daughter, - after which he published a book on Poverty, and began to wear pink socks. Book History of Socialism in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Socialism in the United States Classic Reprint written by Morris Hillquit and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (October, 1903), four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Its mission and place in the politics of the country have become more definitely settled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Our contention is that nearly all the tendencies upon which Marx counted have failed him, and, consequently, that from the point of view of Marx's own economic in terpretation of history the social revolution is but a revolutionary utopia. Book A Short Study of State Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short Study of State Socialism Classic Reprint written by Reuben John Bryce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Study of State Socialism The limits and purpose of this little book would be exceeded if any attempt were made at a detailed account, either of the origin of Socialism, or of the various forms which it has assumed. To trace the growth of the principles upon which Socialism is founded would involve an examination of historical development and would require a separate volume.* Our concern here is with the fact of Socialism. For the purpose of an intelligent understanding of our subject only a brief historical survey is necessary. After that it will be essential to come to some understanding as to what Socialism precisely is, for at present the word is applied most loosely. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Socialism The Opening chapter of this book - the chapter of general exposition - has been adopted and issued by the Independent Labour Party as a statement of the Socialist position. There is much confusion in the public mind about Socialism. The word is flung about indiscriminately by politicians as a mere term of abuse. That is for the moment the favourite method of making faces at their Opponents adopted by the ruck of political partisans With whom that sort of thing passes for the discussion of public affairs. As against that prevalent imbecility, this book is intended to provide a clear and definite reasoned statement of the essential teaching of Socialism. Book Socialism and Co Operation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Socialism and Co Operation Classic Reprint written by Leonard Woolf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Co-Operation Smillie, and Trotsky, and Mr. Sidney Webb. I have called each of these gentlemen a socialist, because each would call himself a socialist. I believe in freedom of thought, and it seems to me absurd to forbid anyone to think and call himself a socialist if he wishes to do so. It is, however, notorious that Lenin and Trotsky would deny that many of the others mentioned were socialists, while some Of the others would deny' that Lenin and Trotsky's system of society had any right to call itself socialism. It is essential that a writer on socialism should face this difficulty and make his position clear at the outset. I am aware that, although I call myself and think myself a socialist, many other socialists will deny that what I call socialism is really socialism. I cannot return the compliment. I believe that most people who honestly consider themselves to be socialists are such. Lenin and Mr. Sidney Webb are both socialists, because they both wish the foundations of social organization to be Of a certain kind. They may differ fundamentally on other, and possibly equally impor tant, questions, on, e.g., the means by which the social revolution may be attained, but they do agree on this vital point they wish to substitute a socialistic for a capitalistic society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength and Weakness of Socialism The United States has now the opportunity which Germany had twenty years ago. It is not by any means too late for us to escape the situation in which Germany finds herself. However it may be in Germany, the policy of social reform is still practicable among us; but we must always bear in mind the high ideals which social ism has placed before the masses of the people, and which they have absorbed.
