Book The Scaremongers RLE The First World War

Download or read book The Scaremongers RLE The First World War written by A. J. A. Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revealing book illustrates how the passion for war was fostered and promoted. The author provides detailed evidence of how and why an image of Germany as a nation determined upon world hegemony was deliberately promoted by a group of British newspaper editors, proprietors and journalists. This book examines the role of these ‘scaremongers’. Were they as influential as their critics claimed? Did they influence the minds of their readers and shape events? Were they guilty of creating a climate of opinion that ensured that their prophecies of inevitable Anglo-German war became fact in 1914?

Download or read book Labour British radicalism and the First World War written by Lucy Bland and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise set of thirteen essays looking at various aspects of the British left, movements of protest and the cumulative impact of the First World War. There are three broad areas this work intends to make a contribution to; the first is to help us further understand the role the Labour Party played in the conflict, and its evolving attitudes towards the war; the second strand concerns the notion of work, and particularly women’s work; the third strand deals with the impact of theory and practice of forces located largely outside the United Kingdom. Through these essays this book aims to provide a series of thirteen bite-size analyses of key issues affecting the British left throughout the war, and to further our understanding of it in this critical period of commemoration.

Book The Red War on the Family

Download or read book The Red War on the Family written by Samuel Saloman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red War on the Family It should not be necessary to apologize for yet another volume on socialism. True, much has been written on both sides, and publication assuredly will continue until such time, if it ever comes, when socialism will be an assured fact or will be relegated to the limbo where peacefully rest for all time other theories of life that, too, had their outspoken defenders, other philosophies that in their day, like socialism to-day, made their appeals to the hearts and minds of men. But even before the close of the greatest war in history a material change had taken place in the world's affairs, and necessarily in the socialist philosophy. Socialism in some measure is not as it was, and transmuted into practice it has undergone radical change. Because of such change the opposition is compelled to revise its methods and its arguments and to adopt an entirely different outlook on what before had been regarded by some fearful ones as a remote threat but which since has become an immediate menace to existing institutions. A material change has taken place in some of the great countries of the world but lately participants in the Great War, and socialism, the great "doctrine of despair," as ever has thrived on the unrest resulting from defeat. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and War The lectures as printed in this volume are not, however, in quite the same form as when delivered orally. Nor is the substance exactly identical. The exigencies of oral delivery sometimes made it necessary to treat the different points touched upon in the lecture in a difl'erent order from that originally intended; and occasionally leave some points untouched upon, when the lecture became too long for delivery in the lecture room. The lectures as here presented are, therefore, not in the form in which they were delivered, but rather in the form in which they were intended to be delivered. The substance remaining the same, except for the omissions in the oral delivery but included in the present volume. Book The Global Challenge of Peace

Download or read book The Global Challenge of Peace written by Matt Perry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book scrutinizes the events of 1919 from below: the global underside of the Wilsonian moment. During 1919 the Great Powers redrew the map of the world with the Treaties of Paris and established the League of Nations intending to prevent future war. Yet what is often missed is that 1919 was a complex threshold between war and peace contested on a global scale. This process began prior to war's end with mutinies, labour and consumer unrest, colonial revolt but reached a high point in 1919. Most obviously, the Russian Revolutions of 1917 continued into 1919 which signalled a decisive year for the Bolshevik regime. While the leaders of the Great Powers famously drew up new states in their Parisian hotel rooms, state formation also had a popular dynamic. The Irish Republic was declared. Afghanistan gained independence. Labour unrest was widespread. This year witnessed the emergence of anti-colonial insurgency and movements across Europe's colonies; in metropolitan centres of Empire, race riots took place in the UK and during the 'red summer' in the US, anti-colonial movements, as well as an important moment of political enfranchisement for women but their expulsion from the wartime labour force. 1919 has many legacies: the first Arab spring, with the awakening of nationalism in the Wilsonian and Bolshevik context; the moment (as a consequence of Jallianwala Bagh) that Britain definitively lost its moral claim to India; the definitive announcement of Black presence in the UK; the great reversal of women's participation in the skilled occupations; the first Fascist movement was founded.

Download or read book The American Socialists and the War written by Alexander Trachtenberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Socialists and the War: A Documentary History of the Attitude of the Socialist Party Toward War and Militarism Since the Outbreak of the Great War Modern penology has long discarded the crude notion that crime is caused by wilful individual perversity and that punish ment is either a corrective for the criminal or a deterrent for the would-be criminal. Enlightened penologists are unanimous in the conviction that crime is mostly the product of unjust and unhealthy social conditions and environment, and that a radical and permanent cure of crime can only be achieved in the im provement and correction of those conditions.
