Book Nuestras Experiencias Biling es

Download or read book Nuestras Experiencias Biling es written by Vania S. Buck and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bilingual social workers are essential in serving families whose first language is Spanish - and are not proficient in English - who seek services from agencies designed to primarily serve the dominant culture in the United States. In child welfare, families who are monolingual in Spanish primarily depend on bilingual social workers who are responsible for providing appropriate language services required by federal law. Yet, bilingual child welfare social workers often face difficulty translating professional terminology and child welfare jargon due to the lack of training, professional development, or support from their agencies. There is minimal research on the type of support bilingual social workers in child welfare receive and need in order to adequately serve families such as Spanish-speaking ones or how the lack of training affects outcomes of Latinx families in child welfare. To explore the type of support needed, a cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted using virtual interviews with 13 child welfare social workers throughout California who shared their experiences as bilinguals. The results found that bilingual social workers tend to be supported primarily by their peers and not directly by their agencies. Participants shared their ideal types of support but primarily had collective perspectives in helping the families that they serve rather than themselves because they had personal insight of the disservice monolingual families face even if they have a bilingual social worker. It is important for child welfare agencies to recognize and understand the experiences of bilingual social workers to better support them professionally, avoid burnout, increase retention, and appropriately serve Spanish-speaking families.

Book An Exploratory Study of Social Work Students

Download or read book An Exploratory Study of Social Work Students written by Amy Tate (Social worker) and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social workers often work with diverse populations and are held to a code of ethics that requires them to be knowledgeable about and comfortable providing services to all clients. There is a large body of research looking into how language shapes the human experience, especially with regards to emotions and narrative quality, which are important aspects to many models of therapy that social workers utilize in their practices. The primary aim of this study was to look at social work students’ perceived knowledge of interpreter use with clients and interpreter-mediated sessions, along with students’ perceived comfort level with utilizing interpreters in mental health care settings. The data were collected from 130 college students, using a paper-pencil survey. Independent samples T-tests and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were conducted to examine the differences in the levels of perceived knowledge in and comfortable level with the use of interpreters in therapeutic sessions, by field placement experience, language ability, and cultural competence classes. The study found that language ability was a statistically significant predictor with multilingual students rating themselves higher on the perceived knowledge and perceived comfort subscales than monolingual students. The data also showed that overall students perceived themselves as higher on the comfort subscale than on the knowledge subscale, with the low responses on several questions indicating that students were discussing working with interpreters for clients with limited English proficiency (LEP) in their classes. Participant responses on the survey could be used to help social work programs address possible gaps in curriculum around education regarding the utilization of interpreters in therapeutic settings.

Book The Perception of Social Work in the Latino Community

Download or read book The Perception of Social Work in the Latino Community written by Maria L. Alvarez and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore whether the experiences and attitudes Latinos had towards social work affected their decision to seek help and whether social workers could minimize barriers and be more culturally competent within the Latino community. Qualitative research was conducted using a 2-part instruments design: (1) survey and (2) interview. A total of 15 Latinos living in the San Fernando Valley participated in this study. Over the course of a month, self-reported written answers were collected and face-to-face, as well as phone interviews, were conducted. The most common theme found was the lack of awareness of the social work profession and the barriers they faced. The majority of the participants were unaware of what social workers did for individuals, families and the community. Social workers were mistakenly perceived to be eligibility and social service workers, and front office staff and academic counselors, and focused mainly on child welfare. The lack of knowledge of what a social worker was and the misconception of a social worker title clearly was found to be a contributing factor in the misperceptions many of the participants had in this study.

This book examines interpreter-mediated medical encounters and focuses primarily on the phenomenon of bilingual health care. It highlights the interactive and coordinated nature of interpreter-mediated interactions. Elaine Hsieh has put together over 15 hours of interpreter-mediated medical encounters, interview data with 26 interpreters from 17 different cultures/languages, 39 health care providers from 5 clinical specialties, and surveys of 293 providers from 5 clinical specialties. The depth and richness of the data allows for the presentation of a theoretical framework that is not restricted by language combination or clinical contexts. This will be the first book of its kind that includes not only interpreters’ perspectives but also the needs and perspectives of providers from various clinical specialties. Bilingual Health Communication presents an opportunity to lay out a new theoretical framework related to bilingual health care and connects the latest findings from multiple disciplines.
