Book Social Workers Awareness of Commercially Sexually Exploited Children Within Foster Care

Download or read book Social Workers Awareness of Commercially Sexually Exploited Children Within Foster Care written by Isela Vigil and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to examine social workers' level of awareness and their ability to identify, assess, and provide appropriate resources to commercially sexually exploited children within the foster care system. A sample of 103 social workers employed by Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) assigned to Service Planning Area (SPA) 1 were surveyed to examine their self-rated level of awareness in identifying, assessing, and providing appropriate resources to commercially sexually exploited children (CSEC) within the foster care system. Each year more than 300,000 children are victims of commercial sexual exploitation throughout the United States (Adams, Owens & Small, 2010). Research indicates that the majority of these child victims have contact with social workers and the child welfare system (Walker, 2013). Social workers experience challenges in identifying these child victims because these victims present with similar behaviors to non-victims (Pano, 2015). This lack of awareness and difficulty in identifying child victims of commercial sexual exploitation by social workers increases their continued risk of victimization (Blue Campaign, 2014). Our findings indicate that although a majority of Los Angeles County DCFS social workers in SPA 1 have a good understanding of CSEC, they also expressed a need for further in depth CSEC training focusing on interviewing, working with and providing appropriate resources to CSEC within foster care.

Book Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children

Download or read book Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children written by Nai Harrington and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploratory, mixed-methods research study explored the effectiveness of protection laws and services for commercially sexually exploited (CSE) children in Merced County. In addition, the study examined the protocols and procedures, preventative approaches from a child welfare services (CWS) agency perspective, and the impact of the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) California S.B. 855 / A.B. 2035. Thirty social workers voluntarily participated in the self-administered Likert scaling questionnaire, which consisted of 13 CSEC related statements and 1 open-ended question regarding desired services. Two social workers were interviewed by this researcher; the interview consisted of 9 open-ended questions regarding the CSEC. A quantitative analysis was conducted for questionnaire responses to statements 1-13. A qualitative analysis was conducted for the questionnaires open-ended question and social worker interviews. Results indicated a lack of sufficient funding and services in the areas of counseling and shelters for CSE children in Merced County. More services between local community agencies to provide trauma-based counseling, inpatient substance abuse treatment, and immediate and appropriate shelters are needed. Social workers at this CWS agency feel more public awareness and preventative outreach services on the issue and deterrence of CSEC are needed. Keywords: commercial sexual exploitation of children, sex traffickers, sex trafficking of children, commercial sex trafficking, human trafficking, child prostitution, child sexual abuse.

Book Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States

Download or read book Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day in the United States, children and adolescents are victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. Despite the serious and long-term consequences for victims as well as their families, communities, and society, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes are largely under supported, inefficient, uncoordinated, and unevaluated. Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States examines commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents of the United States under age 18. According to this report, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes require better collaborative approaches that build upon the capabilities of people and entities from a range of sectors. In addition, such efforts need to confront demand and the individuals who commit and benefit from these crimes. The report recommends increased awareness and understanding, strengthening of the law's response, strengthening of research to advance understanding and to support the development of prevention and intervention strategies, support for multi-sector and interagency collaboration, and creation of a digital information-sharing platform. A nation that is unaware of these problems or disengaged from solutions unwittingly contributes to the ongoing abuse of minors. If acted upon in a coordinated and comprehensive manner, the recommendations of Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States can help advance and strengthen the nation's emerging efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the United States.

Book Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States

Download or read book Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the United States are frequently overlooked, misunderstood, and unaddressed domestic problems. In the past decade, they have received increasing attention from advocates, the media, academics, and policy makers. However, much of this attention has focused internationally. This international focus has overshadowed the reality that commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors also occur every day within the United States. Commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors not only are illegal activities, but also result in immediate and long-term physical, mental, and emotional harm to victims and survivors. A nation that is unaware of these problems or disengaged from solving them unwittingly contributes to the ongoing abuse of minors and all but ensures that these crimes will remain marginalized and misunderstood. The 2013 Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council report Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States increases awareness and understanding of the crucial problem of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the United States. By examining emerging strategies for preventing and identifying these crimes, for assisting and supporting victims and survivors, and for addressing exploiters and traffickers, that report offers a path forward through recommendations designed to increase awareness and understanding and to support efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes. Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States: A Guide for Providers of Victim and Support Services offers a more concise and focused perspective on the problem and emerging solutions for providers of victim and support services for children and adolescents. These service providers include policy makers, leaders, practitioners, organizations, and programs at the local, state, and federal levels. This guide will be a valuable resource for them, and for child welfare and child protective services, other agencies and programs within the state and federal governments (e.g., the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime), and nongovernmental organizations.

Book Developing Trauma specific Social Work for Commercially Sexually Exploited Children

Download or read book Developing Trauma specific Social Work for Commercially Sexually Exploited Children written by Sharon Denise Santos and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercially Sexually Exploited Children (CSEC) have exceeding difficulties in county child welfare. Due to the all-consuming and devastating form of abuse endured by this population, they often differ greatly from minors which have suffered familial abuse and neglect. These differences are apparent in everything from identification, response to intake, overall behaviors and placement outcomes. (Crowell, K., 2010). The aim of this study is to develop a model of practice for working with CSEC under the jurisdiction of Child welfare that will address the unique needs of this population. This study took into account relevant literature, trainings, documentaries and the testimonies of key informants. The resulting practice model identifies five main areas of need: 1) Education/Training, 2) Engagement, 3) Safety/Stability, 4) Support and 5) Empowerment/Autonomy. This study organizes these areas by levels and details a framework through which social workers may provide each need.

Book Factors Correlated Or Related to Commercially Sexually Exploited Children

Download or read book Factors Correlated Or Related to Commercially Sexually Exploited Children written by Maribel Jimenez and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) is global issue that has become more prevalent in the United States. It includes the commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors, specifically recruiting, enticing, harboring, transporting, exploiting a minor through prostitution or through sex survival such as exchanging sex/sexual acts for money or something of value (Varma, Gillespie, McCracken, Greenabaum, 2015). The global sex trade is the fastest growing form of business, estimated at $32 billion annually. Commercially sexually exploited children most often include children who have experienced neglect, abuse (physical, sexual, emotional), who were in foster care, and runaways (Archer, 2012; Raphael and Ashley, 2008; Reid, 2011; Logan, Walker and Hunt, 2009). This double literature review explores current knowledge on the risk factors, impacts and intervention and preventions strategies. It concludes with a discussion of implications for social work practice and policy, including the need for more funding for prevention and intervention services, victim identification, and law enforcement.

Book Prevention of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Foster Youth

Download or read book Prevention of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Foster Youth written by Claudia Reveles and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this project was to write a grant to obtain funding for the development of a program to prevent female foster youth from becoming involved in commercial sexual exploitation (CSE). There has been a growing awareness among child welfare workers that female foster youth are at-risk for CSE involvement. With few prevention programs currently in place, the grant writer identified this as an unmet need for youth involved in the foster care system. A search for potential funding sources was conducted using online grant databases. The Weingart Foundation was selected as the best potential funding source for this project. A grant was then written to support the development of a CSE awareness prevention program for foster youth living in Los Angeles. The actual submission for funding of this grant was not a requirement for successful completion of this project.

Book The Commerical Sexual Exploitation of Children in Foster Care

Download or read book The Commerical Sexual Exploitation of Children in Foster Care written by Gwynneth F. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children who are commercially sexually exploited (CSE), or prostituted, while in foster care are an understudied and vulnerable population. The literature on the causes and consequences of the commercial sexual exploitation of children is sparse, and none currently examines the demographics and needs of this population in a child welfare context. This study is first of its kind to describe a sample of commercially sexually exploited children in foster care. The goals were to understand the demography of this population, document the mental and physical health problems they present with, and to propose legally and clinically informed policy recommendations to address the needs of these children.

Book The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Foster Care

Download or read book The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Foster Care written by Tiffany Secrest and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many risk factors and behaviors have been correlated with becoming prostituted. As described by Jessor (1982; 1991), a child's social environment and subsequent behaviors are highly interrelated. The findings on risk factors and behaviors among the foster care population show just how vulnerable they are to negative outcomes, such as becoming commercially sexually exploited minors (CSEM). The purpose of this research was to study youth in the foster care population and examine risk factors and behaviors that make some foster care children more vulnerable to becoming commercially sexually exploited through prostitution. A chart review was conducted on archival data of 603 age-matched female youth who entered into a community mental health clinic for assessment from 2005 to 2008. Analysis shows CSEM were more than three times more likely to have run away or been truant from school than non-CSEM. Five times more CSEM reported drug problem behavior as compared to non-CSEM, with drug use reported by 72 % of CSEM and 29% of non-CS EM. Statistically significant differences were not found in reported risk factors of physical or sexual abuse between CSEM and non-CSEM. Correlations among risk factors and behaviors were examined, with significant positive correlations found among all risk behaviors examined including running away, truancy, drug use, and drug problems. Demographic statistics among CSEM and non-CSEM were also reported. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed along with the findings. The findings of this dissertation can help to illuminate some of the risk factors and behaviors placing foster care youth at greater risk for exploitation.
