This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Thought, From Hammurabi to Comte A textbook in social thought should be concerned more with stimulating the intellect than with exercising the memory. For that reason, an attempt has been made here not to catalogue many ideas but rather to summarize and explain a few. These are presented with the various shades of meaning they have had as time passed, so that the development of social thought is disclosed and its unity made apparent. Book Beginning classical social theory

Download or read book Beginning classical social theory written by Marcel Stoetzler and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning classical social theory introduces students and educated general readers to thirteen key social theorists by way of examining a single, exemplary text by each author, ranging from Comte to Adorno. It answers the need for a book that helps students develop the skill to critically read theory. Rather than learning how to admire the canonical theorists, readers are alerted to the flow of their arguments and the texts’ contradictions and limitations. Having gotten ‘under the skin’ of one key text by each author will provide readers with a solid starting point for further study. The book will be suitable as the principal textbook in social theory modules as much as alongside a more conventional textbook as a recommended additional tool for self-study. It will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as educated lay readers.

Book The Normative Structure of Sociology RLE Social Theory

Download or read book The Normative Structure of Sociology RLE Social Theory written by Hermann Strasser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative analysis of the central issues and developments in modern social theory, Dr Strasser contends that enquiry into the function, tasks and mission of sociology as a discipline can be understood only in relation to the subject's historical development. He believes that a discussion of the origin and intention of sociology, particularly in relation to the established social order, enables us to grasp fully the nature of sociological theory, both past and present. He maintains that a sociologist's own position in society, and consequently his views on its development and his way of expressing those views, will affect the theoretical position he takes up.

Book Society State and Urbanism

Download or read book Society State and Urbanism written by Fuad Baali and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1988-07-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ’Ilm al- ’umran is “...an independent science. This science has its own peculiar object—that is, human civilization and social organization. The discussion of this topic is something new, extraordinary, and highly useful. Penetrating research has shown the way to it.” — Ibn Khaldun This book probes the nature, scope, and methods of ’ilm al- ’umran, the new science of human social organization, as it is developed in Ibn Khaldun’s 14th-century masterpiece, the Mugaddimah. It explores his ideas and observations on society, culture, socialization, social control, the state, asabiyah (social solidarity), history as a cyclical movement, urbanization, and the typology of badawa (primitive life) and hadara (civilized life or urbanism). Through a comparative perspective, this study illustrates that Khaldun’s ideas about society have conceptually preceded those of Machiavelli, Vico, and Turgot, as well as those of Montesqueau, Comte, Durkheim, Gumplowicz, Spengler, Tonnies, and even Marx. Society, State, and Urbanism demonstrates that Ibn Khaldun’s thought is relevant to contemporary sociological theory, and that his very language differs little from that of classical and modern sociologists.

Book Professing Sociology

Download or read book Professing Sociology written by Irving Horowitz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professing Sociology was originally published at a time when sociology commanded widespread interest and public funding. Written by one of the leaders of "the new sociology" of the late sixties, this volume captures the nature and intensity of the field's intellectual foundations and scope. It reveals the field's post-World War II development as a scientific discipline and as a profession, and includes the author's most significant writings on critical trends shaping the field.Irving Louis Horowitz divides the life cycle of sociology into three main sections. The first deals with the inner life of sociology, covering basic theoretical issues uniting and dividing the profession. In a second section, Horowitz shows the institutions and sources from which the struggle of ideas is nourished. A third section shows how political life shapes the inner life of American sociology. Horowitz gives a great deal of attention to international social science, to the relationship of social science to public policy, and to federal projects and grant agencies and their effects on research.Irving Louis Horowitz was undoubtedly influential in shaping his field, and Professing Sociology offers valuable insights into how ideas become part of the fabric of professional life. As the new introduction by Howard G. Schneiderman shows, Professing Sociology provides a clear picture of sociology at the height of its importance.

Book Ibn Khald n and the Arab Origins of the Sociology of Civilisation and Power

Download or read book Ibn Khald n and the Arab Origins of the Sociology of Civilisation and Power written by Annalisa Verza and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents Ibn Khaldūn's anticipatory sociology of civilisations and power. Half a millennium before the birth of modern sociology in the West, Ibn Khaldūn—scholar, political counsellor, and Malikite judge—wrote a revolutionary sociological-philosophical treatise, the Muqaddima. This book places his broad, complex, and refined treatise against the background of the Islamo-Greek culture of his time and analyses its main sociological, but also philosophical, historical, and scientific perspectives. Finally, thanks to its "universalisable" core, the author recontextualizes the teachings from the Muqaddima to reveal the deep insights it provides into the society, politics and law of contemporary liberal and multicultural civilisations. A deeper reception of Ibn Khaldūn's perspective is not only important in understanding the Arab contribution to social theory, social history and philosophy, but also diversifies the sociological project beyond the Euro-American standpoint. Given its interdisciplinary appeal, the book addresses a wide readership of students and scholars in sociology, the sociology of law, philosophy of law, philosophy of history, political philosophy, history of civilisations, political sociology, and Arabic studies.
