Book excerpt: A series of syntheses were commissioned by the USDA Forest Service to aid in fuels mitigation project planning. This synthesis focuses on research for assessing the social acceptability of fuels treatments. The synthesis is structured around six important considerations for any social acceptability assessment: defining the fuels treatments being assessed; representing the fuels treatments to people; identifying whose opinion is being sought; deciding how people will be contacted; allowing people to express their judgments; and analyzing and synthesizing the data.

Book Fire Social Science Research from the Pacific Southwest Research Station

Download or read book Fire Social Science Research from the Pacific Southwest Research Station written by Deborah J. Chavez and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire events often have a large impact on recreation and tourism, yet these issues had not been addressed from a social science perspective. There are three distinct lines of research to address: examine values/attitudes and behaviors of recreation residence owners and year-round residents in the wildland-urban interface; examine recreationists¿ perceptions about fire suppression and postfire forest health issues; and examine perceptions and beliefs about recreation activities and impacts to fire-prone ecosystems in the wildland-urban interface. This report includes 17 of these studies grouped into four major topical headings: recreation use research, commun. research, program eval. and interface residents research, and trust research. Charts and tables.

Book Ending the Fossil Fuel Era

Download or read book Ending the Fossil Fuel Era written by Thomas Princen and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative call for delegitimizing fossil fuels rather than accommodating them, accompanied by case studies from Ecuador to Appalachia and from Germany to Norway. Not so long ago, people North and South had little reason to believe that wealth from oil, gas, and coal brought anything but great prosperity. But the presumption of net benefits from fossil fuels is eroding as widening circles of people rich and poor experience the downside.A positive transition to a post-fossil fuel era cannot wait for global agreement, a swap-in of renewables, a miracle technology, a carbon market, or lifestyle change. This book shows that it is now possible to take the first step toward the post-fossil fuel era, by resisting the slow violence of extreme extraction and combustion, exiting the industry, and imagining a good life after fossil fuels. It shows how an environmental politics of transition might occur, arguing for going to the source rather than managing byproducts, for delegitimizing fossil fuels rather than accommodating them, for engaging a politics of deliberately choosing a post-fossil fuel world. Six case studies reveal how individuals, groups, communities, and an entire country have taken first steps out of the fossil fuel era, with experiments that range from leaving oil under the Amazon to ending mountaintop removal in Appalachia.

Book Nuclear Waste Management and Legitimacy

Download or read book Nuclear Waste Management and Legitimacy written by Mats Andrén and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear technology places special demands on society and both nuclear weapons and nuclear energy for peaceful purposes require a large measure of security and monitoring at the international level. This book focuses on nuclear waste management, which can work in democratic countries only if viewed as legitimate by the population. This book posits the inability of democracies to establish such legitimacy as an explanation for the current absence of public policy decisions that can identify a solution. The problems are such that they can be resolved only if fundamental aspects of the modern notion of legitimacy are set aside.

Book Airline Operations and Scheduling

Download or read book Airline Operations and Scheduling written by Massoud Bazargan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations research techniques are extremely important tools for planning airline operations. However, much of the technical literature on airline optimization models is highly specialized and accessible only to a limited audience. Allied to this there is a concern among the operations research community that the materials offered in OR courses at MBA or senior undergraduate business level are too abstract, outdated, and at times irrelevant to today's fast and dynamic airline industry. This book demystifies the operations and scheduling environment, presenting simplified and easy-to-understand models, applied to straightforward and practical examples. After introducing the key issues confronting operations and scheduling within airlines, Airline Operations and Scheduling goes on to provide an objective review of the various optimization models adopted in practice. Each model provides airlines with efficient solutions to a range of scenarios, and is accompanied by case studies similar to those experienced by commercial airlines. Using unique source material and combining interviews with alumni working at operations and scheduling departments of various airlines, this solution-orientated approach has been used on many courses with outstanding feedback. As well as having been comprehensively updated, this second edition of Airline Operations and Scheduling adds new chapters on fuel management systems, baggage handling, aircraft maintenance planning and aircraft boarding strategies. The readership includes graduate and undergraduate business, management, transportation, and engineering students; airlines training and acquainting new recruits with operations planning and scheduling processes; general aviation, flight school, International Air Transport Association (IATA), and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) training course instructors; executive jet, chartered flight, air-cargo and package delivery companies, and airline consultants.
