Book Social Outlook for Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book Social Outlook for Asia and the Pacific written by United Nations and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication points out that to reduce poverty in Asia and the Pacific, countries need to step up their investment in people, in particular on social protection, education and health care. To be effective, existing social development policies need to reach the furthest behind. This requires policymakers to identify the country-specific population groups that are disproportionally poor and deprived as well as the specific barriers that hinder their escape from poverty. Recognizing the centrality of addressing poverty in all its manifestations, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sets out to end poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social protection is a fundamental right and serves as an enabler for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Social protection has been identified as one of the key enablers for implementing the 2030 Agenda and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In most countries, however, large population groups remain unprotected from normal life contingencies. Meanwhile, unprecedented demographic transformations are underway, and the changing world of work introduces new risks for the majority of workers currently occupying jobs in the informal sector. This publication will provide the evidence and impetus to progressively realize social protection for all over the next decade (Decade for Action), based on country-specific contexts, opportunities and challenges.

The report analyses a wide range of areas including economic growth, inflation, trade and investment, financial markets, inequality, employment, and environmental concerns. The special theme of Survey 2015 argues that although rapid economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region has been accompanied by significant declines in poverty rates, development is about more than growth and poverty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia’s rapid economic growth has led to a significant reduction in extreme poverty, but accompanied by rising inequality. This book deals with three questions: What have been the trends of inequality in Asia and the Pacific? What are the key drivers of rising inequality in the region? How should Asian countries respond to the rising inequality? Technological change, globalization, and market-oriented reform have been the key drivers of Asia’s remarkable growth and poverty reduction, but they have also had significant distribution consequences. These three drivers of growth cannot be hindered because they are the sources of productivity improvement and betterment of quality of life. This book will be useful to those interested in policy options that could be deployed by Asian countries in confronting rising inequality.

Book Economic and Social Development in Pacific Asia

Download or read book Economic and Social Development in Pacific Asia written by Chris Dixon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-26 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can be no doubt that Japan remains unchallenged as the economic giant of the Pacific. However, the economies of East and South East Asia are increasingly becoming integrated into a broad Pacific Asia region which contains most of the world's fastest growing economies. In Economic and Social Development in Pacific Asia a group of world authorities set the area in its global context and examine the economic emergence of the region. In so doing, they illustrate that despite superficial similiarities, there have been many more differences and it is not possible to offer a model of Asian development. The authors also challenge the perceived wisdom that this dynamic growth is the result of laissez-faire, market-led economies. They argue that on the contrary, there has been a great deal of government intervention, and this growth is actually a result of a policy of guiding the market.

Book Asian Development Outlook 2020

Download or read book Asian Development Outlook 2020 written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a disappointing 2019, growth prospects in developing Asia have worsened under the impact of the current health crisis. Signs of incipient recovery near the turn of this year were quickly overthrown as COVID-19 broke out in January 2020 in the region’s largest economy and subsequently expanded into a global pandemic. Disruption to regional and global supply chains, trade, and tourism, and the continued spread of the outbreak, leave the region reeling under massive economic shocks and financial turmoil. Across Asia, the authorities are responding with policies to contain the outbreak, facilitate medical interventions, and support vulnerable businesses and households. Assuming that the outbreak is contained this year, growth is expected to recover in 2021. Especially to face down fundamental threats such as the current medical emergency, innovation is critical to growth and development. As some economies in developing Asia challenge the innovation frontier, many others lag. More and better innovation is needed in the region to sustain growth that is more inclusive and environmentally sustainable. Five key drivers of innovation are sound education, productive entrepreneurship, high-quality institutions, efficient financial systems, and dynamic cities that excite knowledge exchange. The journey to creating an innovative society takes long-term commitment and hard work.
