The question is crucial today when an increasing share of world patents are taken out by countries such as Japan, South Korea and China, which have limited energy resources and cultures very different from those in the West. However, most previous studies of the beginnings of industrialization have focused on the resources and institutions of Britain alone. As a result, they have missed the lessons to be learned from casting the net more widely so as to examine all regions of the North-Atlantic community. This book pinpoints the surprising differences between innovating and non-innovating regions. Protection of property rights, a practical ideology and abundant resources were not sufficient to spark accelerated innovation. The key to the Industrial Revolution, this study shows through case studies and rigorous verification, was the effect of expanding social networks on people’s willingness to cooperate. Language standardization permitted the widening of circles of cooperation to encompass individuals with increasingly different sets of knowledge. The result was an unprecedented burst of what some linguists have called “double-scope blending” – the integration of hitherto unrelated concepts to create something new. These findings have important implications for corporate and government policy.

Histories of major technological innovations show that often the creative initiative of users and user communities becomes the determining factor in the evolution of particular innovations. The evolutionary routes of the telephone, the Internet, the World Wide Web, email, and the Linux operating system all took their developers by surprise. Articulation of these technologies as meaningful products and systems was made possible by innovative users and unintended resources. Iterative and interactive models have replaced the traditional linear model of innovation during the last decade. Yet, heroic innovators and entrepreneurs, unambiguous functionality of products, and a focus on the up-stream aspects of innovation still underlie much discussion on innovation, intellectual property rights, technology policy, and product development. Coherent conceptual, theoretical and practical conclusions from research on knowledge creation, theory of learning, history of technology, and the social basis of innovative change have rarely been made. This book argues that innovation is about creating meaning; that it is inherently social; and is grounded in existing social practices. To understand the social basis of innovation and technology development we have to move beyond the traditional product-centric view on innovations. Integrating concepts from several disciplinary perspectives and detailed analyses of the evolution of Internet-related innovations, including packet-switched computer networks, World Wide Web, and the Linux open source operating system, the book develops foundations for a new theoretical and practical understanding of innovation. For example, it shows that innovative development can occur in two qualitatively different ways, one based on evolving specialization and the other based on recombination of existing socially produced resources. The expanding communication and collaboration networks have increased the importance of the recombinatory mode making mobility of resources, sociotechnical translation mechanisms, and meaning creation in communities of practice increasingly important for innovation research and product development.

I also knew, my best teachers would the people who created social media itself. The first job was to identify the 50 top inventors, bloggers, authors, officers, and directors of the biggest social media companies worldwide. I next, spent the summer of 2007, tracking them down, connecting with them, and persuading them to tell their story about their incredible contributions to social media. I was shocked and over joyed that out of the 50 world igniters identified, all but two agreed. They would spend as much as spend an hour on the phone, telling me their personal how's, when's, and why's they dedicated their lives to creating social media tools. The excitement of speaking with people like Gary Vaynerchuk before he was Gary "V", Matt Mullenweg who invented and coded WordPress, Alan Levy the founder of BlogTalkRadio, Biz Stone, the inventor of Twitter, and my favorite inventor and "Father of the Internet", Vint Cerf, and many others was a once in a lifetime event! Because of their insights and graciousness, each of them taught me about their contributions to their own vertical segment of this new digital world. This gave me a complete perspective and understanding, which was more than anyone else at the time and maybe even today. Not everyone needed to become an expert in every platform. I am proud and grateful to say, The Social Media Bible is in it's Third Edition, five languages, hit #1 on Amazon, and broke the $2m retail sales mark. This is unbelievable for a business book! Realizing the value of this content, I made it a point to take three of the average ten pages from each of interviews and put them in each chapter of the book. Unfortunately, I was only able to give 30% of the amazing content and insights to my readers. There was literally, a treasure trove of personal insights from the actual inventors and developers of of the biggest names in social media. Now, we visualize them as mega-corporations, when in 2007, they were only start ups and dreams of people just like you and me. Now, on the 10th anniversary, I am sharing their entirety as a self-help, blueprint to wealth, inspiration for us all to follow our dreams. When I teach entrepreneurism, two of the first quotes I give my students are... "You can't loose if you don't quit" and "Never give up!" You will experience this spirit in their individual stories captured here. Learn from the successes of these giants. Share the passion they feel for what they believe. And... Never, Give, Up!
